How We Flat Tow our Jeep Cherokee

- We have been towing our Jeep Cherokee for a couple of years and thought we would share our experience of why we choose the Cherokee and how we set it up to flat tow behind our 2016 Tiffin Open Road 34PA using the Blue Ox tow bar.
As always, Keep Smiling and Be Kind.

We love our Cherokee Trailhawk
the cigar lighter in the center arm rest is always hot even when ignition is off if you want to power your dash cam that way.
Yes, but didn’t want to risk drawing too much from the battery on long trips, or when forgetting to disconnect for quick overnights, especially when we stop overnight but don’t disconnect. Just one less thing to worry about for me.
Cool video! Could you show how to unhook the vehicle from the RV/how to take the vehicle out of 'Neutral'?
The steps are pretty much the same.
1) press the start button twice with the foot OFF the brake to the On position
2) press the Brake and Place transmission in neutral
3) while holding the brake in Press and hold small button till the red light goes off.
4) still holding the brake, place transmission in park
5] then start the engine.
Just make sure not to disconnect the tow bar till you do this procedure, or at least put the park brake on while disconnecting the tow bar, or else it will roll freely when you disconnect.
I will try to remember to show in a future video
Thank you so much. Can you tell me the specific braking system you use and where to purchase it?
Under the dash there’s a Demco G-Force controller. It’s a vacume based system, not air pressure. I just have to remember to turn it on when we tow and turn it off when we are not towing.

Great vid. Please share information on the brake system you chose for towed vehicle. Thanks

Can you flat tow in accessory mode? The brake system I'm looking at requires accessory on
I wouldn’t be sure, but it would concern me as it would draw down the battery and possibly enable other features like auto park brake. In the Jeep manual it specifically says to turn the ignition off.
great video. I flat tow a Colorado now and have to disconnect the battery. Have you had any issue with you battery draining or is it trickle charged from your Motorhome ?
I’ve had no issues with battery draining while towing.
Did you add the additional/optional Mopar wiring kit that is suggested in the manual?? (Apparently the purpose is to power the steering pump)
As far as I know, no. The steering is loose which is why you can’t back up or else the steering binds up. The only wiring under the hood is for the brakes. Though I could be wrong.
@@LivinOurDream Thank you. After several Chrysler dealer inquiries, and two RV tow kit installer conversations, plus multiple inquiries on RV forums, it appears that the MoPar wiring is not needed on 2019 and later models. Prior to that it is recommended to prevent Jeep Death Wobble.
Super interesting experience doing a deep dive on this.
Thanks for doing the deep dive me sharing.
Why didn't you use the NSA 10002 Hercules Tow Bar (WITH BRAKING SYSTEM)?
I read good reviews and no bad reviews for the blue ox system which is why we choose that. We also wanted an all electric braking system, which is why we choose the one we did. All in all, we’ve been really happy with the setup. I can set up or brake down in 5-10 minutes easily.
Is the flat tow only for the Trailhawk trim?
That’s what we found. Only the Trailhawk was able to put the drive train in neutral. I originally wanted a smaller Compass, but no Compass could be put in full neutral.
@@LivinOurDream Ditto. I did a deep dive on the issue and would have preferred the Compass, but for identical reasons had to go with the Trailhawk.
Thanks for sharing this video and do you have a hard time getting fuel at certain gas station
The Jeep follows very well, but I have to pick my pumps carefully. I usually pick an outside pump. Also, with this tow set up you can’t back up unless you disconnect because the steering on the Jeep is loose and would cause issues. We only had to do that once 😎
We use Cosco
