      Underrated he most certainly is not. In the years he acted both on TV shows and in movies he won several awards for his acting talent. He and Harvey Korman while friends were also fierce rivals when it came to the academy awards. There is even a video of them being interviewed together. Tim Conway had a career that spanned several decades. So no he is not an "underrated" performer.

    Tim was such a devious genius. His mind was always going, but he always saved the good ad-libs for the tapings. His mission in life was to make his co-stars break character. And he would do different things at each of the two tapings. Most everything you see and hear from him, they were seeing and hearing if for the first time, too. But Vicki's comeback at the end is absolutely perfect.

      Vickie's last line was not on the script. It was her way of going off script too. Which she never did. Thats why it broke all of them. Vickie was still new to the group at this time. And was often frustrated because Tim was always going off script and got away with it. It made her confused as to how she could stay on script and make it work. So it all built up and she went off script too. As you can see, it took all of them by surprise. Even the stage and film crew lost it. Tim loved it and this off script skit is considered an epic blooper, to this very day.

    Tim Conway-- the funniest man on live TV! 🤣 I used to watch this show every Sat night. You never knew what was going to happen but you always knew it was going to be funny! Like someone said, all of those people on that couch were top notch comedians, Dick van Dyke, Vicky Lawrence, Carol Burnett and Tim Conway. All of them are legends in comedy, but Tim Conway just had a special way about him where he could crack anybody up with a crazy line until they just couldn't do anything but laugh hysterically and forget their lines, etc. This show was live so you just never knew what someone was gonna say or do. I've heard Carol say in interviews that they would rehearse but then in the live show, the skit never played out the same. RIP Tim Conway 😢. We're loosing all the greats from the past. Dick van Dyke is in his 90's, Carol Burnett is in her 80's but I think Vicky Lawrence is probably in her 60's. 😂 it was a great time for TV. Lots of people in the entertainment business got to be on live TV for a few minutes to keep the public interested in what they were up to in life. Keep their name relevant. Nowadays, all we see is a RUclips video when they say or do something stupid or criminal.
    Anyhow, I'm really glad somebody has posted things like these clips of the Carol Burnett Show so the younger generations can see the great stuff we got to see on TV every week. 😀!

  • @canadiantimberwolf1
    @canadiantimberwolf1 4 года назад +118

    A lot of time Tim would never show up at the rehearsals. So when these scripts came into play, they never knew what he was gonna say or do, and why Harvey Korman laughed so much. That particular script is a classic blooper from Vicki Lawrence. She was told to just get him back, play his game and that was when she finally drew up enough courage to say " Is that little asshole finished" was her moment to shine. She still talks about that to this day as does Carol Burnett with her show she has. Tim Conway, was a class act.. Rest In Peace and thanks for the laughs...

    • @iarocks44
      @iarocks44 4 года назад +18

      Actually this is not really true. Tim was always at rehearsal. Never missed. What he did was go through the script exactly as written. But then when they went live, he would ad lib and that's why they never knew what he was going to do. In this particular case they were told just before shooting live that the elephant story would be different but not how. Here is a clip from VIckie Lawrence talking about it and talking about Tim - who I do agree with you there he was a comedic genius and true class act. ruclips.net/video/aA7bxTc0AJw/видео.html

    When Mama got her own show, "Mama's Family", Carol Burnett would sometimes guest star as Eunice with Harvey Korman as her husband Ed during the first season, and there were some really great moments like this one. There was also an entire TV-movie called "Eunice" that was performed live on tape before a studio audience like a stage play, which was excellent. It covers the time between when Eunice was a teenager in the 50s to the day of Mama's funeral.
    Vicki Lawrence started out as the new kid on the show, and usually played Carol's kid sister or a Valley Girl type. It was when she took on the Mama character to such an amazing degree that she really came into her own on the show.

    What makes this extra funny is the girl that played grandma wasn't an actress or comedian per se. She got the job because she looked like Carol Burnett (she had won a Carol Burnett look-alike contest). She complained to her makeup artist, who she had just recently married, that all the stars got to ad lib and change the act and she didn't feel it was her place to do so. While hubby was finishing her makeup, the producer came in and said there would be a change in the scene (they did two cuts before a live audience, then combined the best parts for TV, and Conway was famous for secretly ad libbing to make everyone break character and laugh). Her husband just said "Get 'im!" and she sure as hell did. This innocent, non actress who never broke character shocked them all!
    An added note; Dick Van Dyke who was comic legend in his own right, admitted years later that he peed his pants, you can see during the skit he was holding it in.

      I've heard her tell the story. Her husband was in the dressing room with her when someone tipped her off that Conway had something planned, and her husband just said to her "Get him". And did she ever-it's one of the best examples of a verbal "kneecapping" I've seen.

    According to cast members, including Vicki Lawrence, the first version of the elephant story was in the script. Tim Conway just had a way of delivering lines that constantly broke up the others. After they filmed it, they took a break. During the break, a decision was made to re-film the scene using the second version of the story, which the others hadn't heard before. They were just told that he'd be telling something different. But it was still scripted -- he wasn't making it up as he went. But then there was Vicki. She'd been struggling to play her part as straight as she could, but during the break someone (I don't recall if it was her husband, a staffer, or a friend) told her to just cut loose and let Tim have it for once. So her "You sure that little a**h*** is through?" was the only unscripted line in the whole thing. Mission accomplished -- she literally had them rolling on the floor.

    Vicki Lawrence (Mama) was the toughest one to break and I think Tim Conway took it as a challenge. She almost always stayed in character no matter what, which made it even more amusing, as did the fact she played Carol Burnett's (Eunice's) mom even though in real life she was sixteen years younger than Carol. I was just a "tweener" and early teenage kid back then, at even at that "too cool for school" age I loved this show and most of the classic variety shows of that era. They had something that appealed to all generations. The whole family could gather around and enjoy them together and have those shared experiences and inside jokes forever. You mention Conway's elephant story to just about any American who was alive back then and they'll know what you're talking about.
    Tim Conway Jr. has had his own daily radio show on KFI in Los Angeles for years. Every once in a while he mentions something from his experiences growing up in the suburbs with TC as his dad.

    Tim Conway was a comic genius. He admitted that he did everything he could to make them break character each week. This was back in the days of a true live audience. Originally, they showed it live, but once he joined, they began having to tape it so that they could get all of the skits on air. He was famous for absolutely breaking everyone up on stage. This elephant story is a classic example. He told the director that he planned to go off script, but nobody told the actors. It became one of the funniest outtakes of all time for ANY show. Of course that last sentence by Vicky Lawrence would never have made it past the censors of the day. She was much younger than the rest of the cast and had been being very shy about being with them. This is counted as the first time she ever asserted herself on the show and the timing of it was comic gold

    Little backstory about why this was so funny in context. At the time Vicki Lawrence was a relative unknown and she'd been learning from Carol who was a huge star. So she'd been on the show for some time, but had really never done anything that wasn't strictly on the script since she was kind of in awe of Carol, Tim and of course, in this case Dick van Dyke. So in this particular sketch Tim had made some changes between the time they first ran it in dress rehearsal and the live performance in front of an audience. Now this was a common thing for Tim and Vicki was getting aggravated. She was complaining about it backstage and someone said "just get him", suggesting that she do something to get back at Tim. Now remember Vicki had never cut loose with an ad lib or anything. So they were doing the sketch and everyone was trying to keep a straight face as Tim was cracking everyone up. So at the end, Vicki did "get him". The "are you sure the little asshole is finished" ad lib was SO unexpected from her, that they couldn't keep it together.
