This is American music. It was written in a time when American classical composers were looking for a uniquely American sound. Gershwin and Copland found that sound. What is the point of stripping the intent of the composer and original choreographer from the ballet? Peck has made the piece sterile and boring by proceeding this way. By contrast, would you strip all the ethnic dances out of the Nutcracker? These are what give the Nutcracker its charm, its guts. Peck is dealing in sophistry. Bad America, bad, bad. Peck is immature intellectually and emotionally.
