A Christian Understanding of Faith & Works [Romans 6-8]

  • If we're justified by faith, can we do whatever we want? In Paul's grand exposition of the Gospel in Romans, he anticipates this exact question. The beginning of Romans 6 asks "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?" Paul's resounding response - "By no means!" Mormons often bring up this exact objection to Christianity when they quote James 2 and say "Faith without deeds is dead"
The realities of salvation change us, such that if we've been justified by faith-we will certainly act differently. Good works are a certain result of a man who has been justified, and yet-they're not a prerequisite for eternal life.
The relationship between faith and works are parsed out in Romans 6-8, which is the topic of this podcast episode. Bradley and Garrett walk through those 3 chapters of Romans and explain what Paul has said about our deeds. While works are not prerequisites of eternal life-they are important in the Christian life.

Hi GLM! Thank you for: providing simple definitions for words/concepts that many LDS people don’t usually have a solid biblical understanding of like justification, propitiation, imputation or even faith. We may think we do, but we usually have our own definitions. And thx also for showing how the Bible (as in Romans, James, etc.) shows that the order of things is crucial to walking as a real apprentice to Jesus. Using the equation and other concrete examples is SO helpful. It’s so much easier to go back to the scripture and see that it’s saying that true faith must come first and then works aligned with God’s heart will follow. It’s was a real struggle for me to see this without friends showing me several examples then I could see it everywhere in the Bible. Praising God for his patience and teaching. God bless you.

How can faith come before works if faith without works is dead? Faith must come with works.

I was born and raised a mormon. I'm now a born-again bible believing evangelical of 30+ years. Here's what I think is lost within the 'faith vs works' argument targeting mormons specifically. The definition of faith is fairly agreed upon and the definition of works is usually 'good deeds'. With mormonism the good deeds definition is expanded to "Temple work" and the fidelity to carrying out the assignments of your position within the ward. If they fail to do 'temple work' they aren't going to the highest level of heaven. So even the 'good deeds' aren't nearly enough, temple work, the vigilant wearing of garments, etc, etc, unique to mormonism is of equal if not great consequence.

It’s similar to the “eternal rewards” of Christianity

@@EricSmyth2Christ So is doing the various 'work' within the Temples and living up to the covenants and ordinances therein, a requisite to obtaining the highest degree of glory within the Celestial kingdom?...or can a mormon skip all that and still be saved by grace and get there anyway?

If GLM is right and works are not necessary for our justification then why did Jesus say this Matthew 7:21?

Can someone enter Gods kingdom without baptism? GLM says yes but what does Jesus say: John 3:5. Maybe the thief had been baptised. We don’t know he hadn’t.

It is important to remember that the christian church began in Acts ,not Romans.
All of Pauls' letters begin with the greeting," to all the saints". All of Pauls' letters are to already saved believers and are a more indepth study of important scriptural teachings, including those on salvation.
They are not teaching on a new way to be saved, but are expanded teaching on subjects thats foundations have already been layed in the book of Acts.

The debate between works and faith is silly. It's like debating if breathing is when we inhale or when we exhale.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of repentance. Repentance is work. Therefore the gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of work. In Revelation John says: "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."
Labor is work. And our works follow us. Yes God makes it all possible. But that we live, then our part in the matter to work is required.
