Love that black and white! Using such a simple palette is often the best route. The absence of color helps eliminate distraction. Plus, we can't forget the Rorschach Factor (lol).
Caren. My goodness you are such a pleasure to watch, listen to, and learn from. These artists can be so indulgent and self consumed. It’s so great to just discuss the work and to be real!! Thank you! You are wonderful.
Caren,... how gorgeous is this??!! I just recently found out about acrylic pours & have watched a good number of them. Although I lean towards the blues/greens ocean colors, I absolutely love this... enchanting! you have a special knack for teaching... especially how you explain what you're thinking as you go. So often I say.."No, stop right there!" and you keep going and all of a sudden it makes sense. You definitely have an artists heart. Thank you for taking your time to show us how it's done!
years ago I was boiling water for pasta and put a good amount of oil in the water. I was fascinated by the openings between the water and the oil, wishing I could paint something that looked that way. Little did I know, back then, that I would find you and others on youtube that are doing what I desired. thanks so much for your videos. I am over the moon.
Thanks so much, Caren from England under lockdown,it's given me real hope for amazing painting now with the simple technique you have shared with the world.
Great video! Will be trying this very soon! Thank you for sharing all the materials you are using! Finally I do no need to guess what I should be buying! Thanks!!!
This is beautiful, Caren! You know, I might try this on a black canvas with silver or pearlescent white, maybe a dark blue metallic, and another metallic color.
I really want to try this technique! I love the look of cartilage tissue sections and each of these pouring videos looks like beautiful hypertrophic and chondrocytes in the growth plate.
Thanks, Caren, this is gorgeous. I have always avoided Paynes Grey, thinking it too similar to black, and boring - not any more! I am going down to Hobbycraft as soon as I can to get some. It really does add a little something to the black and white, and I am also thinking that if I want something a little more subtle in my coloured pours, this would be perfect. I have subscribed, and look forward to watching you again.
LaurelBlue honestly from what I've heard from people with art degrees, college is NOT the way to go. Learn from artists who's work you love and develop your own ideas, you will be much more free to follow your own path.
Sue Peterson I think it's more effective when mixed into the paint beforehand but it could be interesting to spritz it. You can buy WD40 silicone spray or a brand called Blaster and try it.
Caren, I wasn't so sure about Acrylic Pouring - it all seemed as though paintings were all about "Cells" and just Haphazard Composition. When I saw your Pours, making flowers, I was so happy to see what you did! I have been wondering whether a "Pour" (Dried, obviously,) can be a Background for a painting. How would that work out?
What do you do about the edges of your canvases? I love it when a painting comes out with patterns and cells even on the edges and corners but sometimes it's not worth losing the paint to try to let it just pour off. I've tried using the runoff paint underneath but it never looks like the rest of the painting. Suggestions? I love your paintings by the way! You've inspired me to start this new experimental study
Having the pattern go over the edges is one of my favorite things about this technique. It's really important to me to have it flow and continue. I did a short video about it: ruclips.net/video/nqNKJIBP2kU/видео.html Also, you can mop up the runoff paint with watercolor paper and create new paintings with the excess. Here's a video I did about it: ruclips.net/video/8g9aEjslGug/видео.html
Would you consider a video showing your body of work, I'm not an instagrammer, and would love to see how you finish these beautiful pieces. Thanks Caren!
you don't have to be signed up to Instagram to look. My paintings get sold and I rarely have a large enough group to show much of a body of work. On Instagram, you can see my paintings going back a few years. Check it out at: instagram.com/carengoodrich Also, when the video ends, the paintings are finished. The only thing I do is varnish them after they are dry.
Do you ever swipe on the diagonal? If so, does that change the outcome of the cells, especially if the painting was tilted on the vertical to increase coverage of the canvas? I hope my question makes sense. I'm watching several artists to learn how to make paintings with cells, but have not seen anyone pour or swipe on the diagonal. Thank you for sharing your expertise with the rest of us.
Hi, Caren- Intermediate beginner here - May I ask a few questions? I've noticed that my white often dries to a "chalky" finish. What can I do to get a more glossy texture with the white? Also, I've noticed that some of my paints dry darker than they were when wet. Is this the result of using cheap paint, maybe? I'm in the process of switching over to Nova Colors, but still have some of the Liquitex and Artist Loft Basics I'd like to use up... Thank you so much for your videos and wonderful guidance!!
Greta Friant different brands of paint dry with different finishes. I do a final gloss coat with Minwax Polycrylic after the painting is dry. It’s in my supply list. For paint colors that dry dark, the only thing you can do is add some white to it to lighten it up. Even with Nova Paint, transparent colors will be somewhat dark until you add white.
kristine Kerr in early 2018, I introduced my own line of Paint Ready To Pour called Happy Medium. I use it exclusively and you can see it in action in all my videos. It’s available only at www.happymedium.fun.
I love your videos and you seem like such a cool person! I can tell...YOU, my dear, are an ART NERD! Haha! Just like I am. One of my favorite painters, Robert Burridge loves Nova paints and mediums. I'll have to look for this brand. Anyway, thanks for another amazing video. I can't wait until May 3rd when I am ordering a bunch of supplies from Jerry's Artarama for paint pouring. Also, I will be going to Home Depot for Floetrol, since pouring medium is still so dang expensive.
Deborah: I'm not sure! I'm rather new to this myself and don't want to give you false information. I THINK that they're the same thing but pouring medium is used more for acrylic painting and Floetrol is used as a paint leveler for latex house paints. Latex and acrylic are the same sort of thing--a plastic polymer but most artists only used pouring medium because that's what art stores sell. However, pouring medium, such as Liquitex brand are really expensive and that's why artists were interested in finding something that wasn't so crazy expensive. I have seen some people on RUclips using BOTH Floetrol and acrylic pouring medium and that's great...if they have the money for both. I don't have a job, so I can't afford a lot of expensive stuff. Anyway, that's my timid explanation. I hope it helps. :-)
DrummerGrrrl thank you!!! ive seen many that call out the floetrol specially. thought it might be something different. seems to have same effect at a lower cost! can you recommended a shopping list of supplies for a beginner? i would really be greatfull. 😁
Just wondering about the sides of the canvas. With every pour I have seen, nobody has commented on what you do with the sides. Does the paint dry in runs down the sides and is this preferable? Do some artists clean the sides of runny paint? Thanks enjoyed your video.
Huh, and now I know how poring medium works. Thanks for the info, never did quite get why painters used the stuff. Had my guesses though. Now to find me a vendor who sells a gallon of floetrol on amazon for pouring medium. Though hey, can you store extra paint mixed with medium and how?
Ignis King I have created my own line of Paint Ready To Pour called Happy Medium! It’s my special mix of acrylic paint, pouring medium, etc all ready to go so you don’t have to mix and measure. No guesswork. You can buy it at happymedium.fun
Been having all sorts of problems with my paintings slipping off the canvas! Thanks for the pouring medium advice. Do I have to use alot? Can I just replace what I would have used water?
Lovely result, like the way you mixed different colours for white and black. There seemed to be a huge amount of paint with nothing poured off. Did it crack on drying? I don't use Instagram so I did not see it dry.👌
Did I miss it or did you say how much silicone you use? Also does that prevent you from having to use a blow torch to get the cells ?i just watched it over and you said 8 drops, lol :). I do have another question. What about if you use high flow or acrylic inks instead of traditional paint? Would you still need to use water ?
you can use any kind of acrylic paint or ink...try it! I'd still use at least a few drops of water. But you have to experiment! Let me know what you find out!
Parker Fiechtner dense layer is on top! Same with or without silicone. The thinner paint wants to rise to the top. Silicone helps it happen but it can be done without silicone, you just have to practice getting different paint densities.
I love this technique and this canvas is beautiful. I would like to try and buy the necessary products. What do you put in the cups and is there a dosage to be respected ?? Waiting for a reply to buy the equipment. Thank you

YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST! Thank You - Caren
I love hearing your thought process as you work on the composition
Love that black and white! Using such a simple palette is often the best route. The absence of color helps eliminate distraction. Plus, we can't forget the Rorschach Factor (lol).
Caren. My goodness you are such a pleasure to watch, listen to, and learn from. These artists can be so indulgent and self consumed. It’s so great to just discuss the work and to be real!! Thank you! You are wonderful.
Tiffany Fuentes thanks Tiffany! I appreciate you saying that.
You do a lovely job of explaining your process while you paint. Great balance of words and actions. Enjoying your videos!
thank you, I appreciate it very much!!
love this - seems more artistic and less random than other pours I've seen. The way you tinker is a joy.
HextyVision wow thank you!

Jill Bull thanks, Jill! Yes Payne’s grey is often overlooked, but it’s a nice addition to your color collection.
Awesome!
nice painting :)
Just found you! Lovely work! Can't wait to try this.
That looks fantastic! I tried it as well but did not concentrate much on the cells (see video). Really love your video!
Caren! Omgoodness how I love your work!! I wanted to take a college art course, but sign me up with you instead!!

Ben Mayhew thank you! Wishing you the best!
very beautiful! love the black & white. what would happen if you put the silicone in a Spitz bottle and spritz it in areas, anything?? thank you.
Sue Peterson I think it's more effective when mixed into the paint beforehand but it could be interesting to spritz it. You can buy WD40 silicone spray or a brand called Blaster and try it.
youre awesome

it can, but clean off any silicone from your surface first. :)
I wish I can get those beautiful cells . Even though I add 4-5 drops of silicone
I kinda liked that big bold line you had there. I think you were on to something there. :)
great painting Caren. could you please tell me the best way to remove silicone from a painting.when its dry. kind regards Sandra xxx

sofieonecrow it shouldn't make any difference which way you swipe. I was planning on demoing a diagonal soon!
I look forward to seeing that video. Thanks!
Este lo has hecho con medium? El mediun lo ha puesto en los 2 colores, blanco y negro? O solo en el blanco último? Gracias.
Great videos, Caren - I'm wondering about how this will work as decoration on a wooden platter or bowl rim...Cheers
Hi Caren, I love this black, white, grey painting here. Tell me, do you do anything to the sides of your paintings? Thanks for your wisdom!
Gail VanBurgel I did a short video on the topic: ruclips.net/video/nqNKJIBP2kU/видео.html

DrummerGrrrl whats the difference btwn floetrol and a pouring medium. i want to try this so bad. thanks.

I've had pouring medium on back order since mid may!
I'm definitely going to try this one.. great work. :) please tell which pouring medium you use?
So I was wondering do you put silicone in all of the colors that you use for a swipe because I'm having problems with my swype not working very well
Just wondering about the sides of the canvas. With every pour I have seen, nobody has commented on what you do with the sides. Does the paint dry in runs down the sides and is this preferable? Do some artists clean the sides of runny paint? Thanks enjoyed your video.
Nice video …. Do All colors have silicone?
Hi. Great work. Can I make cells with household paint and can I use KY jelly as a silicone substitute in household paint? Thanks so much
I got lost on nova paint web site. What product is pouring med. You demonstrations are Great.
So beautiful and amazing. Thank you for sharing, you are so inspiring! Just want to know what you use as a pouring medium.
I was using Novaplex 233 but currently have switched to Easy Flow. It's available on my Amazon supply list in the pinned comment below all my videos.
Huh, and now I know how poring medium works. Thanks for the info, never did quite get why painters used the stuff. Had my guesses though. Now to find me a vendor who sells a gallon of floetrol on amazon for pouring medium. Though hey, can you store extra paint mixed with medium and how?

Been having all sorts of problems with my paintings slipping off the canvas! Thanks for the pouring medium advice. Do I have to use alot? Can I just replace what I would have used water?
fab video thanks for sharing one question please what is pouring medium?
Lovely result, like the way you mixed different colours for white and black. There seemed to be a huge amount of paint with nothing poured off. Did it crack on drying? I don't use Instagram so I did not see it dry.👌
No it did not crack. Here is a video I did about how to minimize cracking: ruclips.net/video/xlwinOuJYm8/видео.html
Turned out great. What about the edges?
Should I use simple white glue for pouring medium?
Did I miss it or did you say how much silicone you use? Also does that prevent you from having to use a blow torch to get the cells ?i just watched it over and you said 8 drops, lol :). I do have another question. What about if you use high flow or acrylic inks instead of traditional paint? Would you still need to use water ?
you can use any kind of acrylic paint or ink...try it! I'd still use at least a few drops of water. But you have to experiment! Let me know what you find out!
Caren Goodrich definitely will do :)
when not using silicone, do you want your bottom layer of paint to be more dense than the layer you're swiping? Or the other way around
Parker Fiechtner dense layer is on top! Same with or without silicone. The thinner paint wants to rise to the top. Silicone helps it happen but it can be done without silicone, you just have to practice getting different paint densities.
Hi very nice videos i would like to ask the proportion of the colour mixed with how much silicone and water?
Raghdaa Al-Tohami approx 1 part paint, 3 parts pouring medium, a dash of water and a few drops of silicone
Well, you make it look effortless. Mine looks like a 1st grader did it :)
I love this technique and this canvas is beautiful. I would like to try and buy the necessary products. What do you put in the cups and is there a dosage to be respected ?? Waiting for a reply to buy the equipment. Thank you
Hey Caren, Love your vids. I'm just starting out and wanted to know which paints (layers) you are adding the silicone to?
i would like to try this. You do such beautiful work. do have a "shopping list" or link to one for supplies for a beginner? thank you!
