    the best thing about this ev is that it looks like a normal car. You'd never know it was electric unless you knew already or looed at the badge. That's how ev's should be going forward

    • @j0rd4n86
      @j0rd4n86 Год назад +29

      Exactly, the other EV over the top design is what really annoys me about current EVs. I wish they'd make normal cars which just straight up replace the engine with a battery rather the tacky designs that most have.

    We bought an i4 e40 msport last October to replace our leased Honda CRV. This was after test driving the ID.4, Mach E, Model Y, Ioniq 5, EV6, and BMW iX. The practical hatch, driving dynamics, build quality and range were the selling points. The msport EPA range is about 280 miles, but in summer we’re averaging 4.0 mi/kWh so theoretically could get about 300 miles. Since we own the car, we’re keeping the battery between 80% and 20% SOC and we charge at home with the excess power from our solar array. So far we’ve gone 9000 miles without paying a dime (except for the solar installation that should pay off in about 5 years). At 4,600 pounds, this is not a sports sedan despite the pretense. We got the msport package for the dynamic shocks and better brakes. Could have done without the 19” wheels as they lose about 7% of range over the 18s but so be it. We opted for the Pirelli P Zero no-season tires since this is a 4 season car and not sporty enough to demand the PS4s. Our other car, a B9 Audi S4, wears PS4s on the OEM 19 inch wheels and Haakas on aftermarket 18s in winter. The i4 is outstanding for our use case.

    If anyone considering this or a Tesla:::: I borrowed one of these yesterday and ordered one today. I currently have a 2.5year old Tesla Model 3 and the i4 is substantially better built. It is way more engaging to drive. The rear wheel drive feels great. I even love the sound effects in sport mode (I thought I wouldn't). It is slower, but in real world driving I rarely properly used the 4 seconds to 60. This has the right amount of power. Best of all it's better round corners and just feels so much more fun to drive. Other benefits over the Model 3 IMHO: way better brakes and brake feel, adaptive regen which works with the sat nav and radar which is great, much more compliant suspension, build quality is far superior (not sure if Model 3s have improved much in the last couple of years), Apple Carplay (I have really missed it), HUD, adaptive cruise and lane assist that works, auto wipers that work, park assist that works, laser headlights that auto dim (compared to Tesla's laughable system)... I could probably go on...

Steering was direct but extremely devoid of feel. My Audi A4 has better steering but a stiffer ride and a little more noise overall (but almost zero wind noise). iDrive 8 is a bit complicated, but the new display is superbly crisp and high resolution.

He was mashing the gas to get the tail out, yet the sound did not increase because the car wasn't increasing in speed. Pretty counterintuituve and needs to be re-thought IMO. The purpose of sound should be to give feedback

      Already changed to a switch tab. Kinda throws me off since you push the switch forward in order to reverse, and pull the tab back to put it into drive. The loss of the shifter knob throws off the design language and makes the switch positions counterintuitive.
      I get around this by pretending the shifter switch activates rocket thrusters: You select the nose-mounted rockets to reverse the vehicle, then switch to the aft thrusters to propel yourself forward. That's how I keep the switch positions straight in my mind.

    I agree with all your assessments. I just don't really understand the form factor. So much storage capacity with the benefits of a hatchback but such limited space in the backseat seems like a miss to me. Would have been a perfect alternative to a model 3 except the model 3 has a usable front and a much roomier back seat on a dedicated EV platform. • @AM-vb9uy

      I drove the S before switching to i4. Interior quality is much much better than model S, but interior space is much smaller. The model S definetely feels more roomy, but I guess that's logical since the i4 is much more sport oriented. As for the driving, the i4 drives great but so does the model S to be honest. edrive40 is slower in acceleration than most model S, if that matters for you. Lastly I would say the i4 is much more an eye catcher. depending on spec.

    Having to push a start button to drive anywhere is quite silly. But I understand this is a legacy platform with legacy thinking. Of course like most if not all ICE-based EVs, this car is space-inefficient and has no frunk.

      Bear in mind most accessories are running off 12 volts delivered via an old-fashioned car battery, so as not to electrocute folks who spill something in the cabin.
      Having something, anything, to couple and decouple the high-voltage traction motor circuit at will seems to be a good idea. Hence, a Start/Stop button.

    Idk why anyone would consider this model though. Too expensive for RWD and 335hp. Might as well get a tesla model 3 performance. And it has the tesla supercharging network as well.

      Yea but then you'd own a Tesla with Tesla build quality. One singular touch screen that with to do everything through instead of what you see here with tactile buttons/knobs. You'd also feel like your sitting in some cheap 2000 kia instead of the feeling of a new BMW.

      @@Vractis I have a 2022 M3 competition. Build quality isn't that great neither. There's already a rattle coming from the infotainment screen area. Not sure if it's by the vents or a clip or 2 that assembles the entire thing. But it's somewhere in the dash. I actually prefer the minimalistic design of tesla. I also have a model 3 so i'm able to compare the 2 build qualities. Tesla does have a lot of flaws. But that's why i'm saying if someone spec'ed out this RWD I4 for 70k? Tesla already slashed all of their pricing. You can get a model S long range for 85k. That has like 800hp and good for 10.6. My M3 was the same price.

      Mainly brand prestige, preferred looks and probably the fact that it does feel like a luxury car inside. Worth it over a Model 3 for most people? Probably not but for those that do especially care about prestige and luxury it would be.

    • @theguy1224
      @theguy1224 Год назад

      @@c3vzn That's the thing though. This "base" EV is near 70k. What exactly are you paying for at this price point? It's not a cheap EV and you're not getting top EV performance. So 70k for? Just because it's a BMW? Why not get a 440 grand coupe. Or get an M340I for cheaper. When people buy EV, usually they look for range, performance and network. BMW does offer 2 years (i think they still do) complementary charging. Not sure what that entails as i never bought a BMW EV but i remember my salesman pitching the idea to me about getting an I4 M50 before i placed my deposit on my '22 M3 competition. I told him no i wanted the M3 as my toy, and i'm getting a tesla for my daily driver. It's faster, more simplistic and has a better charging network. There's literally 4 tesla superchargers within a 3 mile radius of my house. I'll never run into the issue of charging the car. I do have level 1 at home and because i only use my tesla monday through friday, i can add about 75 miles of range each day when i plug after work. I'll never run into the issue of running out of battery. I happen to like the usability and the interface of the tesla screen. Everything just works. Is it perfect? No. But neither is my BMW M3 so there's a case to be made on both sides. If i wanted just flat out luxury refinement, i'd get a mercedes.
