When did the Vietnam War start?

  • ➣ The starting date of the Vietnam War has always been a contention amongst various historians, which makes a lot of sense because the war gradually escalated over a long period. Although I don’t think there is an objective answer to this question, there was one point in Vietnamese history that, in my opinion, was a convincing candidate for the start of the war.

As one Vietnamese to another, i appreciate your effort in making history of Vietnam more accessible and understandable for casual everyday people. I love your video style and your research seem pretty unbiased, which i very much appreciate.

I second this as an outsider. I've found it difficult to find Vietnamese history and SEA history generally packaged in a way that my brain clicks with. Zwee's stuff works for me and I found this very illuminating! Thank you.

Another Vietnamese here. Kudos and cheers for your video! A bloody and brilliantly made video, with clear and concise arguments, info being fed bite-size yet still fairly sophisticated.
Keep up the good work bro

That doesn't matter it was mostly non-violent. When a country invades another country, that's an act of war.

That is the action of an allied country helping a government institution in the host country against the intrusion of another rival institution. Remember that the Vietnamese communist government in the north also received support. Similar conflicts as the government in the south. Therefore, this is a proxy war with the influence of communists and capitalists, not a liberation struggle at all. The liberation period ended after the French colonialists and Japanese fascists left Vietnam. With the Viet Minh's struggle is to gather all parties in Vietnam, many people who were in the Viet Minh ranks worked for the government of the Republic of Vietnam after the division because they did not like communism and its surreal ideals

The North Korean government also receives massive support from their government, so what? A "democracy" without equal and full human rights it is not a democracy. Period.

The ancient Greek democracy wasn't democratic by any standards. Only aristocratic males with salves are allowed to vote? Yeah, really democratic. The democracy was a philosophical idea for them.

I always considered the start of north Vietnamese military intervention in the south as the start of the war.

  • @DiHiongTan

Growing up in a Vietnamese diaspora community where the yellow flag was glorified and the red regime was and still is condemned, I was basically taught that the yellow republic regime was better for the people. Today, after learning more about the happenings of the past, my personal perspective of communism largely remain unchanged but I have also become very disappointed in the southern regime. Sure, the north has committed unimaginable atrocities during the conflict but so has the south… Both sides have caused so much pain and suffering to the civilians. Both sides have oppressed their citizens and violated their basic human rights. Worst part is, supporters of both sides are either blinded, brainwashed or in complete denial regarding the imperfections of their political regimes.
A great example is that southern supports tend to harp on about how communism oppressed and denied people of practicing their religion. However, they fail to recognise that the Ngo Dinh Diem regime also oppressed Buddhism despite it being the country’s largest religion. When that was pointed out, a complicated fabric of excuses would be woven to explain and protect the late president’s decision.
Perhaps I am just ignorant and don’t know every tiny detail. Unless I grew up during that time and witness it first hand, it is hard to tell what is fact and what is propaganda. In any case, with the knowledge I’ve gained from looking into both sides, I have concluded that neither side is unconditionally “good”. Both sides have done good but have also made many grave mistakes that costed thousands of innocent lives. To me, and me alone, Vietnam was once split into two and essentially ruled by two dictatorships.
Throughout history, conflict has broken out all over the world and when you break it all down, the common denominator is greed. Greed for power. Greed for wealth. Greed for land. This greed can be disguised as patriotism at times but in every case, it brings about suffering to the innocent civilians that just want to live in peace with their basic human rights… What is worse is that, despite our advancements in knowledge and technology, these greed wars are still happening today. I hope for a conflict-free world one day and who knows if it is even possible but until my last breath, all I can do is hope for peace and harmony.

Another great video. I think too, that when people talk about North Vietnam and the leaders they almost always say communist. While it is true that the leadership was and is communist the actual fight was for independence. It just happened that the communists had better "war" plans and gained momentum because their following grew and grew. Had the French not been as oppressive and had Vietnam been allowed to have its independence in 1919 after WWI, I think it could be debated that Vietnam would not be communist/socialist today. Perhaps socialist but I am skeptical it would be communist.
