I think you will find the reporter to be Evan Green, not Peter Wherett. Good comprehensive report from a journo who had a genuine interest in all types of motoring.
What a great video. I love the comparison with the tercel at the end. I have owned, driven, and offroaded, both hundreds of thousands of miles, the Subaru is way better off road, but the Toyota is way better on the road. Both are great cars. Missed.
It all happened mostly back in the early 70's when most of Australia's trade was with countries that dealt in metric rather than imperial. I was a bit young then to understand what was happening though.Speed here is measured in kilometres per hour.
Regarding the tercel its factory tyres might have been poor for the application where as tyres on Subaru were a specially made mud/snow tyre known as a bridestone sf radial in 175/70R13 I think not sure what tercel ran.
or they where swapped out. This was a Subaru promotional video and the Tercel was new whereas the Subaru had been around a long time and they would have been worried about the new Toyota.
If only they would've designed deflective covers for the damn CV boots! I've lost more of those to sticks & branches poking up through the rubber and causing water ingress & the grease to leak out. 8:20
I remember the Toyota Tercel wagon. It wasn't as attractive as the Subaru wagon (at least I don't think so). I'd much prefer the Subaru 4wd any day over the Toyota.
i like how the guy was absolutely mashing the gas up a mountain in 1st gear & as soon as it started spinning he just stopped & said "Well thats as far as im going to get"
I've never visited Australia. I hope to eventually. I've always liked a car that can withstand Australia's unforgiving outback conditions. If only cars sold here in the USA were built that durable.
".. roo guard or bull bar, depending on your target" best line ever!

We use the metric system for some things. The speedometer on our cars use both Miles Per Hour (MPH) and kilometres per hour (km/h).

judging by the wiki subaru leone/loyale/brat/etc page, these are 2nd gen leones. they were in production from '79-'84.

Tercel driven on different line to Subaru. Driven on slope that's why it slid.

They failed anyway with just road use! the boots would slip off
I have an 89 model Japanese wife and an 88 model Subaru wagon, very happy Aussie 😁😁😁
4:37 like a boss
what year are the wagons they are testing? and are they gl dl models i cant find a difference online i am looking for one of these.
thanks
Probably 1983 but the difference between the DL and GL Is that the GL has more luxurious interior than the DL

I like both...but i call FOUL at the end...the Tercel looked like it had Donuts/bald tires on all 4 wheels...

I didn't kno my Subaru had them suspension screws to lift it
It was in the owners manual!

It looks like the Brumby in Australia is basically the old Brat in the US.
Yeah it was brumby in AU, BRAT in the USA and I think Subaru MY in the UK. I
@@m4rk4nthony10 I think it was the '284' in the UK and the 'MV' or 'Shifter' and, imaginatively enough, the 'Pickup' in some other markets.
love this video
Why do you reckon Australia switched from inches to millimetres? England and the USA uses inches for most things. Speed is measured in Miles Per Hour.
One look at the back of the Nissan and you'll know why these had the nickname of "Mobile ATM Machine" - lol 12:25
I thought I might be the only one who'd notice that. It was pretty funny.
If only our American market Subarus were built this rugged.
Tercel slid down slope on hill after being driven on a different line to the Subaru. Clearly misleading.
7:16 lol voice over
Tercel had crappy tires
I love watching these old commercial videos. Just shows how they sell junk.
