      This was POORLY researched. I was a Journeyman Gas Pipe fitter, installation & repair of gas appliances for 50 years. I got rid of all the gas appliances in my home and I am elated about it. Yes, there was the inital wiring upgrade, that was it. Yes an electric furnace sucks current, but a HEAT PUMP is actually cheaper to operate and also cools on hot days. Instead of a tank electric water heater, I have a tankless type and it only pulls electricity when I actually run hot water, and it provides an endless supply. Same with my electric dryer, and I have an induction range, which cooks faster than gas and has equally good instant control. So these tech guys are only talking about the past, not the current options.
      And lastly, unlike my friends who still use supposedly cheap natural gas, I didn't get a $400 gas bill for one month in January. And my electric bill LADWP was only $200 for everything, including charging TWO electric cars. This forced conversion is as foolish an idea as has ever been conceived.

    • @DavidStrchld
      @DavidStrchld Год назад

      I've heard about this mysterious 'someones' going to be making lots of money off of this' but it appears to be quite the opposite. It's breaking a monopoly, the gas industry, and the oligopoly of the oil industry. Both of which is a powerful influence in our elections and politics which should not be. Especially as oil prices (and as a result propane) are set internationally, often by unfriendly nations. Why home heating prices shot up to over $5/gal right before this past election day then collapsed back down right after shows me who the rich and powerful want us to vote for and we really need to stop that (if the president could control the oil prices we would never have seen that!, so who is and who are they saying they want you to vote for by holding us by the short hairs). So no it's not that someone stands to make a great deal of money, it's someone stands to stop making a great deal of money and they are fighting like hell to prevent it. Now with that said I don't like getting rid of the gas appliances but with the weight of it's influence it may be worth the loss.

    This is total insanity! What about all the elderly, like myself and my husband. Our house is 50+ years old, and we blew a breaker awhile back because I plugged in 3 items at the same time! Breaker would not reset. Found out it will cost $4000 to replace the panel!! We cannot afford that, so we have no stove, no microwave, no toaster and no power on one entire side of our kitchen. Our stove is gas, so we can still cook, thank goodness!! But no oven!! And it will remain this way as we will never be able to afford to get it fixed!! So if these idiot politicians think they can force this on elderly and low income, they have another whole group of people that will be living in poverty and not be able to replace appliances, heaters, etc. I'm old, so hopefully I will die and not have to worry about it.

    Let's see what the politicians can ban next. How about BIG polluters like classic cars and motorcycles forcing all of those to go EV? How about outlawing all propane torches, heaters and fireplaces you see at restaurants? Forcing folks will do no good; they will simply order a gas water heater from Oregon or Nevada. When we upgraded our shower, I needed to go out of state to get a custom shower head since CA bans most that don't meet flow reduction standards. We installed our own flow reducer to save energy using the appliance I preferred, not the state. I also got solar over the summer and in the process of getting a heat pump because it makes financial/ecological sense, not because some politician said I have to. We have an EV, PHEV for the same reason but, don't take away our diesel truck! And luckily, we have the finance to do so; many people don't. Most importantly, many older homes are not prepared for massive electrical changes needed to implement these appliances. Think about your 80 year old grandmother getting by on SS having to spend $30,000+ to change her furnace, electrical panel, hot water heater and clothes dryer!

The real problem is there are too many people in a small area, and they want to build more units for more people. It's all about tax, and regulation, never entirely about about people though they claim it is their mission is to protect. At some point you need to limit the growth of things because just being to confined in small spaces is hazardous to your health. All this does is encourages a reliance upon government, and corporate services as a necessity. Remember Newsome & PUC gave PG&E a gift when they decided that people that want solar after a certain time now PG&E is at no obligation to pay customers that provide power to the grid, a big mistake by Newsom, and the State Of California Public Utility Commission, they are corrupt beyond corrupt, I think the PG&E San Bruno pipe line explosion uncovered all we need to know about the PUC, and PG&E they are in bed together....

So I hope you will do a story that is about the advantages of moving into the 21st century, instead of scaring people about changes that ALL of us must do, or face even more hellacious storms and lower food production, forever.

      This is all about furthering the control over every aspect of our lives and profiting from it.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 Год назад +1

      I used to have a solar panel that held water, in the warm months the water would heat up on the roof, and then it would feed into the water heater instead of cold water, thereby reducing the energy to heat the water. I'm not sure if they still make those. (Bought house in 1987).
      What about those instant water heaters? The tankless ones? Would you need one for each sink/ shower or one for the house? All I keep hearing is that the cost of energy wll be much higher than now. Plus with the power going out all the time, folks won't be able to cook, heat, take hot showers while the electricity is out.
      And the electric cars, there isn't enough electricity for everything as it is.

    • @sitechca70
      @sitechca70 Год назад +1

      No, NEM3.0 starts next month for new rooftop PV homeowners. This assumes you are served by an IOU, e.g. PG&E. Electricity will never beat the efficiency of natural gas heating. BTW, I am a solar advocate. The "all-electric" home is a good idea for new construction if NEM3.0 did not exist, not old Bay Area homes.

      @@EdwardGarrenMFT Glad all electric was economical for you. Note that I said Investor Owned Utility (IOU) served areas. You're lucky you have LADWP. Just compare the rates and you have your answer. All homeowners should do some simple math. Operating cost of gas appliances vs your electricity rates. With IOU and all-electric, your usage will bump you up into Tier 2 rates. If you have solar and NEM3, ACC export is not economical and TOU will not be good for the typical single residential family usage pattern. So what works for Mr. Garren may not work for others.
      As for the Big Picture, what we should all do is push for more non-solar renewables and storage for California. When the sun goes down, more than half of our electricity is either imported or is sourced from natural gas peaker plants (e.g. right now at 10:30pm 38% natural gas, 21% import per CalISO). We have too much solar, but not enough ESS. When electricity is cheap and clean, it will incentivize the right behavior.

    Many older all-electric homes, at least on the East Coast, only have 100 amps service (some with service wires rated even lower at 60 amps) and do just fine. The electrician in the news story says even 200 amps, which is standard in most newer homes, may not be enough. That's hard to believe. For those switching out appliances, be wary of electricians pushing costly upgrades that may not be necessary.

      Agreed on the poor research. The energy code basically doesn't allow a conventional electric resistance water heater - which is what the electrical contractor was talking about. Unless there is no gas service available. The contractor had the amperages inflated even for that. A heat pump water heater is insanely efficient - 2-3 times more efficient than a gas water heater and a tankless as well.
      What they did get right is that a heat pump water heater will be way more expensive installed. Part of that is the water heater costing more, and part is the need to install a 220 circuit at the water heater. Part is they are new and the contractors are charging thousands of dollars more for reasons that baffle me. Competition will hopefully rein in the pricing over time.
