Kind of a fitting day for this to be uploaded...🎉 Haha find the blog version of this post here: wtwhivemind.com/how-rewatching-rezero-made-me-change-my-score-from-1-to-9/
You a got a sub I'm actually happy to see other lift up rezero casue this is a good as series, and I also feel you on how you felt about it cause I did the same thing and ep 18 hit me hard , I'm currently on season and I can say I'm happy , keep up the good videos bro
More people need to see this. The biggest misunderstanding about this show is that people only look at it at face value and assume its a story about waifu wars, or trying to be edgy and it just really isn't
I can't get a buddy of mine to watch it, because he thinks it is overhyped. I don't want to force him to watch it, but he didn't even watch Violet Evergarden even so he wanted to. -_-'
@@econnak7909 look, Me trying to make him watch Re:Zero Made it worse and reinforcing that he is missing out just has the opposite effect. I just avoid Spoilers for now and watch season 2.
I'll be honest, when I watched Re:Zero the first time, I immediately understood the story. Because whenever I see Subaru, I see myself. I kept that thought as a doubt until S2 E4 where I can trully confirm that Subaru is just like me. I didnt stay for the girls, or the edginess, or its new isekai concept, but rather Subaru's story. I want to learn from Subaru, in fact I want to be Subaru.
Heres my take, Subaru is probably the complete opposite of who I am, and I still liked his character a lot. He is probably my favorite character out of all the animes ive watched and out of all the mangas ive read. And Subaru's character in S2 just goes up from here on out.
I'm the same way as you. Watching Subaru is like looking in a mirror for me, the self-hatred, the guilt of disappointing my family. It all ties into the story of hope that one day we can grow into the hero of our own story. Rise to the occasion and start over from zero when it matters most. Its because of these themes and Subaru himself that Re Zero is a top 3 anime of all time for me. Waifus are just the icing on the cake.
Same for me. Subaru's venting with his dad fit so well with how I've felt, and still do to an extent, that I couldn't help but cry. I didn't really understand what Re; Zero was trying to do when I watched the 1st season years ago (although I still liked it, just not nearly as much as I do now), because those feelings didn't really start to manifest until about halfway through my senior year of high school. I kinda just gave up and stopped attending my college classes and failed every one I had my first semester, which just made me sink even deeper. Thankfully I've broken out of that for the most part by taking classes again, but man this show truly is something special.
One theme I didn't get until re: watching Re: zero was the theme of "loneliness". Subaru is in a path of despair and loneliness since it doesn't matter how many times he rewinds, he still is alone in changing the outcome.
Not only that, but the fact that everytime he resets all of the memories he made with the ones close to him dissapear for them and only Subaru remembers them. Part of the Loneliness aspect was back when Rem was torturing Subaru and how he told them about all the thing they did together but Rem had no memory of that since everything got reset. That's part of the Loneliness
@@manofgreed7865 everytime he dies too his memories are clouded is why it takes him a bit to understand he is being reset and takes a while for him to learn his mistakes.
@@manofgreed7865 I think it was shown most prominently in arc 3 where he tried to explain to Emilia how she saved him and all the great things she have done to him but she didn't remember any of that. That's what truly showed me how lonely Subaru is.
@@saikithepsiioniic1358 people use that scene to trash Subaru but it just shows the toll the deaths and losing the connections he has to those around him.
@Constantinos CHRISTODOULAKIS I think he misspelled "especially." I too get that same reaction every time I hear that song. Also when I hear Christina I, Observer, Suzuha, Believe Me, Promise, Farewell...
My three favorite OST's of all time are Steins;Gate, Re:Zero and Kara no Kyoukai (garden of sinners). The vocals from them are also top tier. If you haven't heard them all you are doing yourselves a great injustice. Oh yeah, the animes are spectacular too
The story of Re:Zero is Subaru. No joke. Arc 1: Subaru learns a reason to fight and live. Arc 2: Subaru learns to trust in others. Arc 3: Subaru learns to not hate himself. Arc 4: Subaru learns to love himself. Arc 5: Subaru learns to depend on others. Arc 6: Subaru learns to believe in himself.
@@kytsunee6324 Err, no. Just because someone is the protagonist doesn't meant the story focuses primarily on them. Overlord for example, is primarily about the world and it's interactions with the guild Ainz Oal Gown, rather than with Ainz himself.
I didn't care about watching rezero before because of the constant talk about Rem best girl and I love Emilia. Now I am glad that with the extra time, I managed to pick it up and I find it amusing that there are no characters in the show that I particularly dislike even Subaru that I found kinda of annoying at the beginning and the middle. Rezero is a show about personal growth and finding hope in the middle of despair that I find very relatable.
Im the same. Sadly i belive that the glorification of Rem hurted my perception of her because i subconsciously held her to an impossible standard. Wether i like character more or less is just preference. But when im so indiferent to rem to the point that im glad that she is out the spotlight in season 2 (while admiting she isnt a bad character) then there is something else happening.
Re:Zero is one of the few animes where I don't mind the MC crying as much as he does, because it's pretty fair considering the current situations he's in
I like stories that push the characters to the brink of madness, cause at some point you have to ask the question like Roswaal in season 2, "why aren't you insane yet, Natsuki Subaru?". At some point madness becomes the correct response, and if you're still sane at that point... then you really are a monster at home in madness. Madness is a cure to the disease of reality, when reality has become an unthinkable horror.
Re:Zero is a deconstruction. But not in the sense that most people think. Nowdays, "deconstruction" seems to have lost its meaning. A lot of people seem to think that just because a show is darker than most in that genre, it means it's a deconstruction. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. I belive this misconception started with Madoka Magica. The Mahou Shoujo genre is known for being light-hearted and cute, therefore a Mahou Shoujo that is heavy and dark is a deconstruction, right? Well, not exactly. Mahou Shoujo a power fantasy for little girls to dream about defeating bad guys while looking cute. So a Mahou Shoujo that makes little girls NOT want to become magical girls breaks the foudation of the genre. You CAN make a Mahou Shoujo that has dark subject matter and lots of tragedy, but if the power fantasy aspect is not broken then it's not a deconstruction, it's just a dark series. The same applies to Isekai. Isekai is a power fantasy about a guy who is teleported into a different world(usually RPG-inspired) and there he has lots of adventures, meets all sorts of species, lots of pretty girls fall in love with him, etc. So an Isekai that makes you NOT want to be the protagonist of such a story is a deconstruction. You DON'T want to be Subaru. He is a stupid weakling who can't do anything for the people he loves other than dying and trying again. He gets traumatized several times throughout the story for watching the others die horrible deaths, and he can't tell anyone about his curse because doing so will result in their deaths as well. He has to suffer silently while trying to save everyone and pretend that everything is ok. But that's exactly why he's so great and likeable. A common criticism among Isekai protagonists is that they sometimes go too far into the power fantasy route and end up sacrificing all their relatability. They creators think "oh, just make him an otaku and that'll do" as they proceed to write their cardboard protagonist doing cool stuff thinking that the audience will be impressed. So making an Isekai protagonist who sacrifices power fantasy in favor of relatability is genius. And that's why I love Subaru and anyone who thinks he's an annoying crybaby just didn't get his geniality.
Subaru isn't really a weakling, he's pretty above average in strength, remember when he took out the three goons, it just gets overshadowed by the people he hangs around who all could beat him in a fight.
@@TNNuatn Nothing compared to the people in the world he is in now, but above average in our world. An average to a normal person wouldn't be able to take out those three thugs.
Zack Rose I think Tappei stated that Petra, an 11 year old girl, is currently Subaru’s physical equal. I guess that makes sense, considering he can’t exercise because when he does the results of his training gets reset when he dies-so it would be useless.
Yes I tried to tell my friends that the show is about hope more than it is about despair or suffering. It wasn't really well understood. I'm glad you came to the same conclusion and enjoy watching it. As a psychologist I've been analyzing the series though many different perspectives and I have to say that there are so many things to learn from each different character and the real world applications. I love every bit of rezero and what they are trying to do. I hope you enjoy the new season as it's quite a doozy generally and lore wise.
I was experiencing a lot of self-hatred at the time when Re:Zero aired originally. It was one of those things that helped me to process those emotions through a form of a story.
Joseph O'yek dude same I would have commit sucide if I haven’t met subaru in re:zero he may be a fictional character but the way he constantly grow as a person something I haven’t been able to do is what makes me cherish Subaru as a character and as a person he’s like my star and my hopes of living I’m not exaggerating it
I also rewatched re:zero recently. I also think subaru is great as an MC. Im looking forward to seeing what season 2 holds. Also i really get what you mean about people disliking anime because of misunderstanding. Im really glad you talked about that aspect.
You did a good job putting into words aspects of the series I haven’t heard before. When I initially watched Re: Zero I watched focusing on how Subaru has trouble communicating with people, finding his growth over the season very rewarding. I saw his own self-hatred but I missed what was happening with Rem and Emelia. Definitely going to rewatch the first season again after seeing this.
Re:Zero is my favourite anime of all time and I'm glad to see you warm up to it. The problem with explaining why it's so good is because it's hard to put into words why it's good. You have to watch it and experience the whole anime for yourself. You have to think about it a lot as well. The anime is in fact pretty deep and Subaru is a very realistic character imo.
At first when I watch Re:Zero I was totally laugh and pissed off to Subaru because of his arrogant side. But when the episode comes and the Return by Death was given to Subaru I was anticipated and how funny that I hate Subaru being a arrogant, self-proclaimed is now my most favorite character when ep. 14 the village massacre scene I was like "No, don't. Subaru is going to break his sanity" and the ep 18 that's why I cry the most when Subaru admit his mistakes, laziness, stubborn, and being a arrogant. It was hit me like a gunshot. Then the S2 came out. The Subaru I knew now is gonna be desperate just to saved Rem and I start reading the Arc 4 of Re:Zero Light Novel which is the longest arc and [redacted] 'coz I don't want to spoil it. And the end credit which is the new opening of Re:Zero is giving too much foreshadowing and eastern egg for the whole Arc 4 / S2 You should analyze the actual opening of Re:Zero S2 opening [Realize by Konomi Suzuki] it was hella a good deep dive to what will happen in whole Arc 4 / S2 of Re:Zero
This and your Bleach video are great. I will admit; I found your earlier content a mixed bag. But much like Re;Zero I’ve come to appreciate your takes a lot. And you’re definitely my favorite anituber. So overall, thank you for producing content and I hope that you’re doing well.
I just recently rewatch re:zero (well the directors cut this time) and i did enjoy it more than the firsts time (which i did enjoy TBH). The bits that annoyed me or made me cringe didn’t seem so bad this time and i got to enjoy the story more but adding more info on what the show is about just adds that little icing on the top ❤️ thanks for the video
@@bananagod5530 Well you got to admit that he a simp in some episode and almost only talk Emilia but now he talk to Otto , ram , Beatrice more and more also respect Emilia as his partner U not re zero hater I like re zero because of Subaru ok
Not understanding what a story is trying to do is the number 1 reasons why so many people failed to appreciate Re:Creators, and why for me it was the most underrated anime of the 2010's.
I have watched re:creators. First I'll go with the pros: It has good soundtrack, anime and concept. Cons: It's slow paced, dull (at most times), it is not so engaging. There is not much happening between the characters (especifically the main characters) and the plot is predictable (if you'll ask my perception).
@@doctorz3518 The show has more pros than the ones you mention, but they are still good pros none the less.. As for your cons, yeah the show is slowly paced at times, but all your other points are very subjective. I personally found the show thrilling, a lot of interesting interactions did happen between the character. In fact it's one of the more interesting accepts of the show because its how the show explores it's themes of being a creator, and their relationship with its creation, and how this creations can impact other people. And plot being predictable not only doesn't make it inheritly bad, but I find you hard to believe that everything the show did you could see coming given the type of story it is. If you did, fair enough, but that definitely doesn't mean every person who watched the show was able to too.
When I first watched Re:Zero, I honestly ‘hated’ it, I thought it was just a trashy show that people were stupidly obsessed over. But now a few years later, after watching season 2 as it comes out, I think I’ve started to understand why people loved it so much. I agree with all your points, but weirdly enough the show (especially the 2nd season) has hit me hard personally. In the first season he tells Rem to leave the past behind, and to look forward. In the 2nd his parents show their true love for him, and he in return is able to show that while he is severely flawed, by looking into the future and allowing himself to grow, he’s come a better person. It’s honestly such a beautiful show, that I kinda wish I had someone to talk about it for hours on end.
Really glad you liked it! Re:ZERO is one of those shows that truly shine upon a rewatch. The biggest reason why people hate it is because they go in with the wrong expectations and completely overlook things like Subaru's sublime character arc and the richness of the world and characters. I do think that some of the videos praising/analyzing it did a pretty good job though, like Mother's Basement's video or "The Loneliness of Re:ZERO". I hope you'll give EVA another try as well! (Re:ZERO actually draws from it, you might find several scenes that it subtly references, which is a neat little bonus)
That is is only scene in re:zero that only remembering about it makes me tear up. Don’t get me wrong, this series has a bunch of really good emotional moments(ep18 and 15 for example) but 29 man...it just hits different and way harder
@@themangastand8475 Small spoiler... Subaru takes the first test, and it puts him back home for it, with his parents and before he got isekai'd. It shows the origin of his self-hatred.
One of the reason i ended up loving the What ifs is because we can see the results of him picking the wrong choices and how it changes the lives of all that are with him
Finally someone get it. It's not just about cute anime girls and subaru having a bad time. It's about the relationship between characters, their growth and how they change each other.
Yea.. Re:Zero is about having hope and always having it. This show literally make me cry man it made me understand more about life and appreciate the ones around me. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for understanding this anime, really means a lot.
I was ready to hate in the comments just because of the original low score you gave but after watching it all I can say you articulated many of my own thoughts that I had trouble even formulating, very clearly in this video. The Author said that the whole story about re:zero is about "A person who can't give up if they wanted to" (that's about right) that puts a lot of things in perspective.
I honestly think that this is the best video I have seen from your channel. Not just because of ReZero (because it’s currently one of my favorites), but because of your advice about perspectives. You have honestly made me want to give other series I’ve dropped a chance. Shows like SAO, FT, TG (Mangawise), other seinen etc. So thank you again for your video. Glad I had subscribed to your channel
On my first watch-through, during Epi18 when Subaru said he loved Emilia, I couldn't help but feel like that was the best thing for him to admit, because we all already knew that and we already knew that Rem knew it, and it's a GOOD thing being able to be told something upfront, which Subaru and the series has always been fighting for: honesty. It was so good. Both before and after I felt unrequited love, because before I thought it was sensible storytelling and afterward it was really clear that "yeah, when you want the best for a person, it looks like this, watching them be ABLE TO BE their best." But when I read a lot of comments and reactions, everyone kept harping about Rem Best Girl and Subaru Should Just Love Her and all of that. It was so weird. So this video is kind of validating I guess is what I'm trying to share.
Good vid. I enjoy your videos because they've given me a different way of viewing the media I consume. And it allows me to think about the shows I might not like
Saw this from Twitter today. Goddamn… never felt a story speak to me more then having someone explain it to me from a different POV. I’ll definitely be rewatching this 👌🏼 because I also didn’t like the show and was frustrated that I thought I didn’t see what other did.
Well if you don't care about it, it's going to be a neutral 0. But when you start hearing people say it's a masterpiece and all that shit and they're trying to force you, it becomes a -0.1. But once it's negative, it will only get worse over time. So you can't blame people for that. .... At least that's how my K-pop score reached -100 millions
@@Exel3nce So you're just going to watch a show that you don't care about just to prove that you're strong? Nice logic bro. Even if we ignore all the negative stuff, we still don't want to watch it because we never wanted to. How is that weak?
I think that Subaru has the Shinji Ikari effect. Characters that the reflect an aspect of us that we dont want to see or even admit that it could exist.
IIt took me a long time to understand what Re: zero was trying to say. I knew the author, Tappei Nagatsuki, wanted to express something meaningful in his work. Re: zero has a heart, and I felt this viscerally at the end of ep 12. Episode 12 has Subaru at his most desperate and pathetic. Subaru is forcing human relationships this episode, hoping that if anyone understood him, it would be Emilia. Re: zero is a story of self-discovery best reflected in Friedrich Nietzche 's philosophy in his book "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," and his thought experiment The Eternal Return. Nietzche believes life is an exciting adventure of self-discovery and self-creation, where we always learn and un-learn who we are, losing and finding ourselves at every turn. A lot of themes within Re: zero are reflected in Nietzche's philosophy and presented throughout the story's progression. Nietzche detests Nihilism and the notion that there is no meaning in life. According to Nihilism, there is no meaning in our existence (action, struggle, suffering, etc.). This idea is very well reflected initially through Subaru's repeated failures throughout his adventure even when Subaru succeeds; his involvements where always minuscule. Something he is self-aware of mentioning this to Rem in later episodes. Subaru began to feel the weight of this meaningless as he continued to fail to progress to the next save point. In essence, Subaru suffers in a world filled with emptiness. In "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," the two lead characters, the Übermensch and The Last man, reflect Subaru's progression within Re: zero. Additionally, both of these characters reflect possible solutions to the epidemic of Nihilism, according to Nietzche. Nietzche describes the "Last Man," in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, as the Utilitarian man. The utilitarian man, a human that attempts to maximize pleasures and minimize pain, the modern lifestyle (something Subaru is well acquainted with). While the utilitarian approach is a solution, Nietzche considers it something not worth pursuing. This hedonist man is a pathetic conclusion who is merely content in nothing more. Neitzche believes pain is required if one is to do anything worthwhile, and that we will suffer either way in life. We can let life make us suffer, or we can take our suffering and channel it into something we find purpose in. In Subaru's case, it's a world where he can create meaningful human connections. In contrast to the last man, whose sole desire is his comfort and incapable of creating anything beyond oneself in any form, the overman can establish their values in a world where others live their lives, often unaware that their lives possess no meaning. Thus, an overman can affect and influence the lives of others. In other words, an overman has his values, independent of others, which affects others' lives. An overman is then someone who has a life which is not merely to live each day with no meanings when nothing in the past and future is more important than the present, or more precisely, the pleasure and happiness in the present, but with the purpose for humanity-in essence, becoming oneself. Niet had a lot to say about living life to the fullest, even as someone who struggled with the worse life has to offer. The Eternal Return: Niet proposed a thought experiment Everything we experienced good or bad to be repeated for infinity (sound familiar?). A life lived well is one where you embrace all aspects of your life. Love your fate "The self does not lie passively in wait for us to discover it. Selfhood is made in the active, ongoing process ... The enduring nature of being human is to turn into something else" - John Kaag This way of living will lead to you becoming oneself, and thus, the ultimate inspiration to combat Nihilism. A concept I see within Subaru as a character. However, living life to the fullest in the face of meaningless is difficult for anyone dealing with depression and suffering. What Nietzche would suggest to these strugglers who feel trapped and lost is to do something. Go somewhere and see what happens, laugh, cry, suffer, and grow. Episode 18: From Zero. "Die as soon as you can so that you can come back to life again, like a morning flash, or spring after a brutal winter. Niet would like us to die (symbolically) to get out of our own way, so something else can take our place. So we can become what we are" - John Kaag (Chair of Philosophy, Professor and prominent modern Nietzche author) I genuinely feel that Tappei Nagatsuki took massive inspiration from Nietzche either knowingly or unknowingly because the similarities between his work and Nietzche's philosophy are uncanny. But yeah If you had to hold a gun up to me and ask what i thought Re: zero was about. This is what i would say
"And I dropped it-" "LOOK LEEMU, SOMEBODY NEEDS HELP CUSTOMIZING AND SAVING WITH LIBERTY MUTUAL!!" Thank you Liberty Mutual, I needed the unexpected interruption.
Wow.. you put into words what I’ve always tried to explain to my friends to get them to watch Re Zero. As I’ve read the novels and rewatched this show many times I’ve come to realize Re Zero is my favorite anime, thank you for this video, I hope after people watch this they can give re zero another chance, maybe you’ll find something different about it you can enjoy :>.
Imma bout share this video with some friends!I love ur Perspective and ur right! Its nice to see that someone isn't arguing about who's best girl or how subs a bad MC for rejecting Rem.
I tried talking to a friend at work when season 1 was just starting to air, so like only the first few episodes were out at the time, and he said he thought it was dumb right out the gate simply because he didn't like Subaru for how much of a "weakling" and "cry baby" he was... But like, I'm pretty sure Subaru's reaction to what happens to him seems pretty realistic and normal to me? I never understood that mentality where there's an actual normal and realistic type of MC in an isekai and that was enough reason to hate it. Subaru's growth as a character is what made me really enjoy the series the most, and I really loved that he wasn't OP and was actually the underdog in the story, unlike most other isekai series that were airing at the time and continued to air to this day.
Yeah, subaru is painfully realistic, looking at him makes you look at yourself and it's difficult to look at faults that we all have. So we turn to anime to usually escape it. Had I had subarus ability I dont think I can honestly say I ciuldve done what he did or better. And the novels go to great lengths explaining how painful each death is. I dont want to know how many times I would have to die in order to grow numb to the pain of death, would I even come out normal? Subaru is well written and some of the shit he does is stupid because he isnt the smartest but he does have a lot of courage and perseverance. People shouldnt say his character sucks because he isnt as smart as light or badass as lelouche, because he was never meant to be like that and the story would suffer if he was.
Thank you for this review of your re-watch!~ ♥ I really love your view of Re:Zero. It's comforting to see someone else see this series in a different light!
This piece of advice can really be applied to anything, especially when everything is going on in the world, and hatred and misunderstanding is circulating around and around in an endless cycle. This opened my eyes to why I think this show deserves every bit of praise it gets. I already loved the show from the start, but having this new perspective on it puts my previous views on shows that I wrote off as bad or medicure need to be rectified. Thank you, it helps a lot
This is still one of my favorite shows for a few reasons -Really good OST -The character development/depth & world building -How the author hints at deeper mysteries while taking viewer expectations and subverting them in a convincing way
This was beautiful I’m glad that there are those people who watch re zero with a more open mind and open arms which is why my favorite part in the entire series was the rem confession. But most people would hate on it as they say that all that rem said to Subaru was for nothing or that rem was the perfect choice, that’s not what the story was trying to tell us. Rem was that emotional support that Subaru needed as she reminds him of how much she have changed her life as well as everyone else around him despite of what he thinks of himself. This anime manage to twist our mind not as a watcher but as the mind of Subaru and what he have been through, what he have learned from his past experience, and the major trauma he went through in his past life’s. As all that is combined together to help him become a better person for both him and for everyone around him. The story is so much deeper the what most people would see it and that why re zero is so dame beautiful with its character and gorgeous story
Yea I too stopped after the first EP,but later on when I gave it a try it was an anime that I liked the most so I would say just keep going and eventually the show will grow upon you
And people will love Re zero more and more after each passing season. Arc 4 (season 2) is the peak of Re zero greatness right now, the newest arc being arc 6. I dont say arc 5 and arc 6 are bad by any means, they are amazing, better than the foundation (arc 1-3). But arc 4 has that charm to itt, and the feels can go through the roof, its just an emotional rollercoaster. Great review, glad u love Re zero now and trust me this series is worth all the hype it gets. :D EDIT: wow also i teared up a bit in the last part of your video. There are not a lot of people who get the meaning of Re zero this thoroughly.
Arc 4 had charm in the WN and lost that charm in its transition to the LN, which is sloppily put together drivel in comparison to the WN's cohesive, albeit drawn out, story. WN and LN Arc 6 is way better then LN Arc 4
@@moonum4567 hm. I didnt read the LN yet. But as i heard a couple of scenes were cut out and some got switched up in order. I think making Garfiel a likeable character and meeting Echidna faster was a good choice for the health of the series. I also heard vol 15 was the one messed up a bit.
@@szabolcsnemes2790 LN Arc 4 is more then just that. Most of the praise you've read for it is most likely for the WN version. The Light Novel version is vastly inferior to the Web Novel version
I remember seeing your video on Revue Starlight a few years ago thinking that you just had preconceived notions that kept you from seeing the show for what it is, but it seems you changed your mindset since then. I think this video hits all the right notes, both as an analysis of Re Zero and an observation of the problems of large parts of the anime community. The part about trying to see what a piece of media is actually trying to do instead of being disappointed when it deviates from your preconceived notions is an important message and I'm glad you spread it.
I didn't hate Re:Zero, but I didn't get what was so great about it. I used to hate Subaru and his overall personality, but as the show went on, he did get better, as well as the show.
If you chase season one episodically on a weekly base you probably will give REZERO a lower score. As someone who watched it from ep1 to ep24 in one go I gave it a 9 from get go. People don't have perfect memory, and watching it weekly will makes you forget the important detail of what Subaru goes through to made those judgements.
Me hating things about Subaru is what made me enjoy the show because it pointed out blindspots in myself that I haven't seen another show tackle. It's one of the few times anime has helped me see a flaw in myself I didn't notice before.
Did anyone else cry around epiaode.7 or 8 whete Subaru breaks down and cries on Emilia's lap? All the deaths he saw, others dont have the memories and bonds he has with them. Before I even saw Re:zero, I thought it'd be one of those anime that has a lot of fanservice based on how much people scream for Rem online and when I finally saw it... I saw no hints of fanservice on episode 1!
Glad you finally changed your option cuz personally (I can’t really understand why people would think it’s boring but you made it make sense explaining how people just don’t understand) to a good one lol and personally I love Subaru because of how real he is
Re:zero is a show with depth, and that's not just some platitude. People can love the show for many different reasons because a good story doesn't just focus on a single trope. I don't think other people were wrong about the show either. You just had different tastes and needed a different reason to get into it which I'm glad you could find. Personally I love the dark realism of the show and the challenge that living in this universe poses to a normal person like Subaru. I love the world building. I love the depth and intelligence behind all of the characters and the thought behind how each of them act when faced with the same choices but in different contexts. Also when I play videogames I enjoy learning the games mechanics and using them to overcome challenges, and in Re:Zero I enjoy watching Subaru do essentially that. It's difficult to put into words what makes a well written show good because there are so many different aspects that can vary in importance depending on the reader.
I hate how most people in the community see this show as edgy and only stood out because of Rem and Emilia. They keep saying Rem is best girl because she was there for Subaru or that confession and never really looked deeper than that. They keep saying that Subaru is insufferable due to how weak he is and can't do crap but if they were put in the same situation, they'll probably be more pathetic than him. There's also the "I love Emilia" and "Who is Rem?" meme and I never understood how it became a meme in the first place. If you ever saw this show as just that, why?
How does this video only have 9k views. This is actually the best analysis of the show imo, and I've watched a heck of a ton of analysis videos on this series.
Awesome video as always, you made such great points!! I finally watched Re:Zero for the first time (over the span of 2 days lol) because I wanted to be a part of the hype for season 2 and I wasn't disappointed. Like you said, I misunderstood it at first, and my initial opinion was definitely impacted by the show's popularity, but soon I realized just how amazing the writing is. Can't wait for the weekly suffering to come :)
I thought it was just very good at first. I knew there was something to it that I really enjoyed but couldn't quite understand what it was that made it engaging and entertaining. Now it's one of my all time favorites no question.
learned to love re:zero, one of my top 3 animes, made amazing points, gave credit where it was due AND sees k-on! as more than a cutesy anime. my dude i subbed so hard
I'm very happy with the explanation of the "I love Emilia" moment, when I watched the scene while watching the show after seeing it discussed, I had a bit of a different experience than what people had discussed it as (as you said, many people portray it as "a slap in the face"), so the words you used to explain fit very well.
Absolutely with you man. I'm happy someone made a video putting it into palpitable words. I also absolutely hated Subaru and the pacing of the show, but as I saw the way the show grew along with Subaru, I realized exactly where the show truly shined. Everything after episode 15 is the true nature of the anime and made me love it more and more. Here's to season 2
I was absolutely obsessed with this show when it first aired, beyond how I normally am with anime. I literally would watch episodes three or four times before the next episode came out. Granted, I was in college and had the time, right? Or so I thought. Here comes season 2 and I’m doing the same thing unintentionally. I think you nailed it with the theme of hope and rising up from your failures. The characters are also absolutely stunning, and the different perspectives you get on those characters based on what they would’ve done.
Many people tend to see Subaru's return by death ability as "op" (overpowered), but what they usually fail to acknowledge, is that Subaru feels the pain of death every single time, that he's stuck in a loop he can't always be expected to find a way through, if anything, it's like he's in purgatory, dying, reviving eternally, looking for that single golden thread, leading out of it. As for characters being stunning, it's anime, characters are always stunning in anime, it's hard to not be, especially if the characters in question have ties to nobility.
@@MrHuntingClaw When i first saw Re-Zero, I saw Subaru as a pathetic, useless piece of shit. Idk how people can come to such conclusions. His return by death is very unreliable and very dangerous not to mention that it causes lots of suffering to the host
I really like the characters' relationships within this series, especially Subaru and Emilia's since the build-up to the moment where the distance between the two was shortened significantly at the end of season 1 and is continuing to grow in season 2 is certainly amazing. And the part where you say it's a story about hope, i couldn't agree more.
The best part about this show is that it is "realistic" in a way. I know its not actually realistic, but the mc does not just have a crazy power that lets him win every battle, or just wins "through the power of friendship". His power is not able to solve everything, and every times he tries, he slowly goes insane. Seeing the dead bodies in anime does not seem bad, but just think about seeing real ones. I also hear a lot of people complaining about that section in the middle where he acts really stupid, like calling himself a knight and stuff. This was needed in the show, because of course if you are going insane you are going to make some irrational decisions. Overall great show
I only had to watch it once. I may not have fully understood the story but Subarus emotions resonated with me. The hopelessness. Not being able to speak or be understood due to it. Although born for different reasons. This show made me cry almost every episode. And lose my mind from his absolute idiocy. But also ive never had the strength to push through shit even a 100th the stress levels that are depicted in this coz I mean DAMN. But it made me feel lighter after it finished. Id released so much emotion from myself on the journey this show took me. It allowed me to look at myself too. Then I ended the toxic ass relationship I was in for 7 years that I didnt have the balls to move past. Ty re zero.
I've definitely changed so much as well from when I first started watching cinema and media critically til now. I've stopped trying to "cinemasins" things I watched by arguing its logic and focus more on what the narrative is trying to say, why things happen, and how they happen. I've learned to appreciate the subtle filmmaking techniques that I didn't know about before. I've learned that my view on art will always be subjective, biased, and personal, and I can't give someone else an objective take on art when art is inherently biased and personal. A lot of these issues came from earlier close minded RUclipsrs I watched that always saw their own takes as an absolute truth while giving empty echoes of "your opinion is valid" despite their speech not supporting this. Nowadays, I notice my favourite RUclipsrs, like Jacob Geller and Like Stories of Old, focus so much more on finding meaning in art, in finding the love they have in art, in sharing their personal experience with art, than they ever do criticising or hating on art. I just find so much more value and passion from people talking about what they love. I think that's my favourite type of content and my favourite part of your work as well. Everytime you talk about something you enjoy passionately, or looking for that extra meaning, it's always an eye opening experience. I've adopted this philosophy for my own essays on media analysis and I hope to grow much more as I learn more.
I watched it for the first time this weekend. It was awesome. And I think keeping in mind the things you said in the video probably even made it better for me.
I had a similar feeling you did to my first watch of Re:Zero only watching it because people wouldn't shut up about it. I ended up finishing it but labeled it as mediocre. On the second watch and with help from nearlyonreds rewatch streams I gained a new perspective on the show and thoroughly enjoy it now. Coming into a show or any media with preconceived notions is the fastest way to poison what the media is trying to tell you. Thank you again for making videos about enjoying things and not hating on things.
So basically if someone doesn’t like re:zero, just force them to watch it till episode 4 of second season and there is no way someone wouldn’t fucking cry seeing it
The biggest gripe I have with the Re:Zero haters, is that they let their hate for Subaru ruin the show for them. First of all, anyone who doesn’t understand Subaru is tripping balls. Second, even if you don’t like him, you can still like other aspects of the show.
I loved re zero my first time simply i loved how subaru was all otaku and trying to be positive and the music. I kept watching it and felt bad for him because he kept going and i loved him as a character. I loved how subaru reminded me of myself greatly. Subaru seemed to be cool and positive but he hated himself and was learning and trying to not hate himself and feel worthless and overwhelmed and admiited to everything. Subaru was just so human and awsome. I loved the story as it kept getting more errie and had a deeper lore and world then i imagined. Watching subaru fail and try again and then get encouraged to keep going by rem made me realize i also wasnt alone and i tried to be better like subaru. My fave anime tbh. Love the vid.

Where do I watch it
I'll be honest, when I watched Re:Zero the first time, I immediately understood the story.
Idk about you, but I don't wanna get shank by a lot of people
Heres my take, Subaru is probably the complete opposite of who I am, and I still liked his character a lot. He is probably my favorite character out of all the animes ive watched and out of all the mangas ive read.
And Subaru's character in S2 just goes up from here on out.
Finally some one understands it's subaru's story he's the main character not rem's either emilia's same I want to be like him aswell

I think it was shown most prominently in arc 3 where he tried to explain to Emilia how she saved him and all the great things she have done to him but she didn't remember any of that. That's what truly showed me how lonely Subaru is.

Arc 4: Subaru learns to love himself.

Re:Zero is one of the few animes where I don't mind the MC crying as much as he does, because it's pretty fair considering the current situations he's in
If I was in his place I would be sitting on a corner crying and begging for help right now
@@hallofmemories816 I'd do the same... Then push forward. I'd probably try to stay sane, but I doubt I'd stay too sane.
This comment needs more likes.
Subaru isn't really a weakling, he's pretty above average in strength, remember when he took out the three goons, it just gets overshadowed by the people he hangs around who all could beat him in a fight.

I think Tappei stated that Petra, an 11 year old girl, is currently Subaru’s physical equal.

And the end credit which is the new opening of Re:Zero is giving too much foreshadowing and eastern egg for the whole Arc 4 / S2

Not understanding what a story is trying to do is the number 1 reasons why so many people failed to appreciate Re:Creators, and why for me it was the most underrated anime of the 2010's.
I have watched re:creators. First I'll go with the pros:
It has good soundtrack, anime and concept.
Cons:
It's slow paced, dull (at most times), it is not so engaging. There is not much happening between the characters (especifically the main characters) and the plot is predictable (if you'll ask my perception).
I did understand what re creators tried to do, and it's done very bad.
@@Joshiki_ Bad? Nah, just super mediocre and forgetably.
@@Joshiki_ Okay, well tell me what Re:Creators tried to do, and why it did it badly then.
True man season 1 was pretty great but season 2 hits harder than any show I ever watched...
Really glad you liked it! Re:ZERO is one of those shows that truly shine upon a rewatch. The biggest reason why people hate it is because they go in with the wrong expectations and completely overlook things like Subaru's sublime character arc and the richness of the world and characters.

The wording was "a story about a person whose only weapon is not giving up", iirc.

Both before and after I felt unrequited love, because before I thought it was sensible storytelling and afterward it was really clear that "yeah, when you want the best for a person, it looks like this, watching them be ABLE TO BE their best."
But when I read a lot of comments and reactions, everyone kept harping about Rem Best Girl and Subaru Should Just Love Her and all of that.
Its a shame how many are influenced by hate of the series, this causes people to see re:zero through a negative lens.
Geez this is honestly such a good video
Exactly right, so many people cant make up there own mind.. to influenced by other people's opinions
@@legacymse7095 well, they are mentally weak then
@@Exel3nce So you're just going to watch a show that you don't care about just to prove that you're strong? Nice logic bro. Even if we ignore all the negative stuff, we still don't want to watch it because we never wanted to. How is that weak?
People dislike saburu becuase hes more human than fantasy
Hes a regular weeb thrown into his dream with actual realism

The Eternal Return:
Niet proposed a thought experiment
Everything we experienced good or bad to be repeated for infinity (sound familiar?). A life lived well is one where you embrace all aspects of your life.
Love your fate
"The self does not lie passively in wait for us to discover it. Selfhood is made in the active, ongoing process ... The enduring nature of being human is to turn into something else" - John Kaag
This way of living will lead to you becoming oneself, and thus, the ultimate inspiration to combat Nihilism.
So we can become what we are" - John Kaag (Chair of Philosophy, Professor and prominent modern Nietzche author)
I genuinely feel that Tappei Nagatsuki took massive inspiration from Nietzche either knowingly or unknowingly because the similarities between his work and Nietzche's philosophy are uncanny.
But yeah
If you had to hold a gun up to me and ask what i thought Re: zero was about.
This is what i would say

Wow.. you put into words what I’ve always tried to explain to my friends to get them to watch Re Zero.
I can't express it in words how much I agree with everything you have said in this video. Great video, man!
Thank you for this review of your re-watch!~ ♥
I really love your view of Re:Zero.
It's comforting to see someone else see this series in a different light!
Re:Zero has always been a 10/10, and always will be.
fr, this is a W video but 9 is too low of a score for Re:Zero
This piece of advice can really be applied to anything, especially when everything is going on in the world, and hatred and misunderstanding is circulating around and around in an endless cycle.
This opened my eyes to why I think this show deserves every bit of praise it gets. I already loved the show from the start, but having this new perspective on it puts my previous views on shows that I wrote off as bad or medicure need to be rectified.
Thank you, it helps a lot
This is still one of my favorite shows for a few reasons
-Really good OST
-The character development/depth & world building
-How the author hints at deeper mysteries while taking viewer expectations and subverting them in a convincing way
This was beautiful I’m glad that there are those people who watch re zero with a more open mind and open arms which is why my favorite part in the entire series was the rem confession.
So... I Now understand Re:Zero.
Thank you, thank you so much
Yea I too stopped after the first EP,but later on when I gave it a try it was an anime that I liked the most so I would say just keep going and eventually the show will grow upon you
And people will love Re zero more and more after each passing season. :D
EDIT: wow also i teared up a bit in the last part of your video. There are not a lot of people who get the meaning of Re zero this thoroughly.
I'm not ready for arc 4 uh oh
Thank you for finally putting it into words. God I love re zero so much
It's great to finally find someone other than Chibi who understands Re zero
This show went from a 6 to a 10 on the rewatch
From ep 15 to 18 its just
pain.
tears.
That Subaru and Rem episode took the series to a whole another level
I remember seeing your video on Revue Starlight a few years ago thinking that you just had preconceived notions that kept you from seeing the show for what it is, but it seems you changed your mindset since then. I think this video hits all the right notes, both as an analysis of Re Zero and an observation of the problems of large parts of the anime community. The part about trying to see what a piece of media is actually trying to do instead of being disappointed when it deviates from your preconceived notions is an important message and I'm glad you spread it.
I didn't hate Re:Zero, but I didn't get what was so great about it. I used to hate Subaru and his overall personality, but as the show went on, he did get better, as well as the show.
just like what this guy in the vid said, you dont understand re zero. thats why
Already loved the show and you just made me open my eyes abit more and now I love it a lot more
the steins gate ost hit me hard asf nice vid btw and now with s2 re zero is a pretty good anime
I watched it all in one go give it a 7.5
Not true for everyone, I watched s1 weekly and gave it a 9 when I first watched it
Me hating things about Subaru is what made me enjoy the show because it pointed out blindspots in myself that I haven't seen another show tackle. It's one of the few times anime has helped me see a flaw in myself I didn't notice before.
you became mature, learn to appreciate, and lesser for being edgy, end of the story.
glad you have grown up, and being honest.
Lol who's rem? Am I right fellas?
Your picture just makes your comment better

no.
Hahaha gottem again

Awesome video as always, you made such great points!! I finally watched Re:Zero for the first time (over the span of 2 days lol) because I wanted to be a part of the hype for season 2 and I wasn't disappointed. Like you said, I misunderstood it at first, and my initial opinion was definitely impacted by the show's popularity, but soon I realized just how amazing the writing is. Can't wait for the weekly suffering to come :)
Me and many others who found Re: Zero a masterpiece first time watching
I thought it was just very good at first. I knew there was something to it that I really enjoyed but couldn't quite understand what it was that made it engaging and entertaining. Now it's one of my all time favorites no question.

I'm very happy with the explanation of the "I love Emilia" moment, when I watched the scene while watching the show after seeing it discussed, I had a bit of a different experience than what people had discussed it as (as you said, many people portray it as "a slap in the face"), so the words you used to explain fit very well.
In s2 subaru pretty much confirmed that he loves both Rem and Emilia equally. These stupid Rem vs Emilia simps need to stop

Well, not really. He does love rem, but not romantically. He just cares for her deeply. On the other hand, he very romantically loves emilia.
Idk guys i liked it from the first watch
His return by death is very unreliable and very dangerous not to mention that it causes lots of suffering to the host
i genuinely believe if you haven't watched this show twice you haven't watched it
I really like the characters' relationships within this series, especially Subaru and Emilia's since the build-up to the moment where the distance between the two was shortened significantly at the end of season 1 and is continuing to grow in season 2 is certainly amazing.
I watched re zero when I first started anime so I didn’t really understand and only watched to waste time but after rewatching it was my favorite show
I had a similar feeling you did to my first watch of Re:Zero only watching it because people wouldn't shut up about it.
"I finally found what made this series so good"
*video shows scenes with Rem*
Me: yeah :)
Wow awesome video brotha!
Re: Zero is literally the great grandad of the grandpa of the first isekais.
Kkkkkkk
