  • It's been nearly four years since Re:Zero ended its first season, and my love for the show has only grown more and more with time. I loved the series, I loved the discourse, I loved the memes, and today I want to talk about all of those things and more right as we're in the midst of its second season.

You're exactly right! People hate Subaru because they want to see themselves in Subaru, being the chosen hero in a fantasy world; which they could a bit in the previous episodes. However, when ep 13 aired, it went a bit too realistic and some people realized how much they can relate to Subaru, unable to face their cringe they started hating Subaru and the series.

I can't explain how I feel about Re:Zero... It's like I'm obsessed. I can sincerely say no matter what happens, life was worth it just for being able to experience Re:Zero.
Re:Zero pulls me in like nothing else. It makes me feel emotions like no other medium I know of can. From the mystery, to the epicness, to the suffering, to the relatability.
This video puts into words so much of what I felt back at the time..
Though, I couldn't... I couldn't wait. I read ahead.. and it makes me hyped even more week for week and makes the community reactions so much more fun.
Nagatsuki Tappeis writing skills are absolutely superb. A huge part of what we are, are our thoughts... And a book is nothing else than written thoughts available for everyone. But when I read Re:Zero it always feels like I completely submerge into the words and they become my own thoughts through which I experience the story...
I remember 2016.. I was on edge each week. I had so much trouble waiting a whole week for a new episodes... Some days I couldn't stop thinking about it and would rewatch the recent episodes countless of times or keep myself busy with theories...
I already felt the pull and the mystery from the very beginning (when Beatrice talked about the Witch of Envy my first thought was "I bet you she's not evil! There's something much deeper going on"), but mitrospeeds comments always would confirm my suspicion that there is way more to things than we are shown and the details led to even deeper speculation...
The most amazing thing is how real the world and the characters feel. Everything that happens and every character motivation makes the utmost sense. It leads to very satisfying moments in the show when things slowly start to come together and make sense. Being able to craft such a large scale world and story while making sure everything that happens has a proper impact and happens for a reason... Is beyond amazing.
Ahhh wow this video made me want to talk about all the things I love about this show, but I need to stop. I hope this gets more fews. Everyone who disliked Re:Zero back then needs to see this!

      @PhenomSage  4 года назад +34

Thank you so much for this, this is exactly what I wanted when I was making this video, to hear other people's own experiences back when they watched Re:Zero and the different circumstances that led to them becoming fans. I can tell you I did the exact thing, many episodes in the second half of S1 left off on such painful cliffhangers that I had to rewatch that week's episode multiple times, watch reactions, join discussions, etc. to make the time go by faster. The weeks between 15-18 I swear were some of the longest weeks of my life.
Also you raise another thing I wish I could've talked about more in my script, the world of Re:Zero is so fantastic, like it's so good that I think I'd like to make a separate video on it at some point. Tappei's world-building is superb, the way he ties so many different aspects of his story together is really satisfying.
Thanks again for this comment! Was a blast reading, and I'm glad that this video could resonate with your own personal experiences.

@@PhenomSage I'm glad I'm not the only one honestly! Especially because I'm still the only one in my friends circle who watches it.. and that can be so frustrating! Some friend once told me they dropped it after the first episode because it was "cliché"... Still makes me mad😅 I almost regret not writing scripts myself about it and make videos on the series just because I love it so much! I remember when we got to the last episodes of S1 I came across a comment talking about the blank letter and I sat down a whole week trying to figure out what it meant ... And episode 18.. I cried. Rewatched it and cried again..
I would love to see a video on world building! That be awesome! There's just sooo much to talk about. You might want to split it into 2 parts if you were to do it sometime soon. Like one talking about S1 and the second talking about were these plot points lead to in in the second season or something like that.
I'd also recommend if you're up to it to reading some left out stuff of S1 in the WN. Or the WN after S2. While the LN is the "canon" story and some plot points from the WN might be abandoned, it's worth it. It gives so much more context and has a lot of interesting character interaction. And the Sin If story's are worth reading too! Have you heard of them?
There's something about Re:Zero that always puts me on the edge!

Re Zero is a pretty original story, and it heavily leans towards tragedy, world building, and character growth.
As a result, it starts a bit slow, or it starts giving you the wrong idea of what its going to be in the first couple episodes...
And then it gets better and better and better :D and its without a doubt one of the BEST anime I've ever seen. And I've seen quite a few. Even the English dub ain't half bad, and that's rare too.
I don't get the haters honestly, and most of the digs at the show seems EXTREMELY fake ("its unoriginal").....how?????? HOW? Name one show that is actually similar. Are there other isekais out there? Yeah, and NONE of them are even remotely similar to this. Not a one. Is it similar to some time travels......eh not really. Seriously, haven't seen a single person give this argument who didn't seem like they did more than read a quick wiki paragraph of the plot of Re Zero, and then hype themselves up as some kind of 'high class critic' because they're going against the people who love the show. Its just a fad to hate on things you don't like, so i don't take them all that seriously when their arguments are so poor.
Some people criticize that his ability to return by death takes all the tension out of it....again, they clearly didn't watch the show if they are saying that. Every reaction I ever saw for the show all had the same reaction of fear with his save point, general interest in the mysteries and world building, and concern for the characters. Seriously, watching the show first is fun, and then going back and watching people's reactions makes it ten times better lol XD
And then you have people criticize the main character. That's the only legitimate criticism I've seen, but it seems so....unbelievably shallow. Subaru is a deconstruction of the typical isekai protagonist who goes into the story very self centered believing he is going to be able to save everyone and that everyone should rely on him.....
And you see him get this mindset absolutely DESTROYED, and him become such a better character as a result. People who hate his character, either hate him without giving him a chance to see what he truly is meant to grow into....or they hate that deconstruction that he represents.

Yeah i love every single song in the series. All three of the OP’s are amazing and i can’t explain how much i enjoy them, especially the second one. Obv we can’t forget the even better ED songs, i didn’t really like Styx Helix at first and I still don’t as much as Stay Alive, but I’m definitely enjoying it more and more everytime i hear it. Stay alive is such a good song to me because Rie Takahashi sings it, there’s something about songs which are sung by the VA’s that appeals to me. Especially with ep 18 OST Wishing, this song which is an OST tops so many OP’s and ED’s for other shows for me, and the fact that it’s sung by the Rem VA also adds to how great it is. Ep 15 with Requiem of Silence (I think that’s the name?) is so emotional and well made that everytime i hear it I remember the feelings and how great Re:Zero’s OST is. S2 already has amazing songs, S2 ep5 has a good OST song already when Subaru is talking to Emilia under the stars. I can’t wait to see all the new music for the season. And when S2 part 2 comes out i can guarantee there will be some new amazing bangers in there. Oh, I clearly remember the moment when I fell in love with ReZero and Subaru in particular (not gay, tho).
It was the scene when he survived the 4th night in the mansion with Beako's help only to find out Rem has been killed by a curse. That moment in the bedroom when Emilia shielded him from Ram's anger and looked at him in expectation, that he will explain what he knows and maybe fix the situation somehow.
A proper isekai protagonist would have tried to do something, at least to clear himself from suspicion. But Subaru doesn't. In slow motion he closes his eyes, turns around and leaves the room with only "I'm sorry", letting the built up tension snap into violence behind his back. And that's when I fucking loved it! For the first time in many years I've seen the MC acting as a human would: under sudden pressure and driven by fear he did the worst move possible - for the most simple reason to save his life. Under all the sediments of cheerfulness and over-the-top acting Subaru turned out to be a human, living being that doesn't want to die even when the situation and plot logic call for it.

The first time I watched this show it was instantly my favorite. I'm so happy for finally getting a second season but at the same time I'm skeptical since there have so far apparently been a lot more changes from the source material than in the first season. White fox does seem to doing a good job though so I can only hope that this season ends up being just as good as the first.

    • @PhenomSage
      @PhenomSage  4 года назад +8

I've heard the same but keep in mind that a lot of people's experience with the source material for this arc in season 2 was through the web novel, whereas Tappei himself edited down a lot of material and changed things himself when writing for the light novel, which is what White Fox is adapting from. So that might be where the comments about changes are coming from.

What's important, is this moment, here and now.

The Promised Neverland is the most recent thing for me that had that “weekly appeal.” Every episode would end with me sitting on the very edge of my seat pounding my fist on the table in anticipation for the next one.It had theories racing though my head and me begging to know what happened next. Such an amazing experience that I wish I could’ve gotten with Re:Zero season 1.

  • @A-Rather-Dubious-Character
    @A-Rather-Dubious-Character 4 года назад +7

The thing that makes Subaru an amazing character is almost exactly how you said it.
He's human. He's just a normal shut-in who is almost a copy of what most Anime watchers are like. Me included. I can and likely won't ever put into words just what I mean by that, but after watching every episode S1-2 rn, Subaru's characteristics, traits, personality, resonates deeply with me.
There's always something deep down that we feel shame for, be it 1 thing or 20. Some get over it and, from my perspective, become another generic person that never shuts the fuck up about "just get over it! Enjoy life!"
Even though that's what I've been trying to do for years and it's never enough. I'm held back by my embarrassments, my shortcomings, my flaws, and so I become content with it. I SAY I don't have a problem with it, and that I'll just go with the flow even though I'm being surpassed by those that I either don't think deserve their success, or I just feel jealous of them and not show it. -- This statement might change in the years to come. But I feel content with things. I'm okay with not becoming amazingly successful or rich, with getting recognition that I may think I deserve.
We're not perfect. Some of us acknowledge that and move on with life, get a job, start a family, be happy.
Some acknowledge it and desperately try to change things. They want recognition, they want someone to tell them that they matter, that it's not their fault, that THEY deserve happiness and to be loved and that it's the worlds' fault and not their own.
And then there's people like me. Someone who teeters on the ever-increasingly thin tightrope.
I keep leaning towards the latter. Then back, back and forth. Back and forth.
I'm 60% positive that we all find something creepily similar when we look at Subaru as a person, and realize we aren't that different from him.

I had heard plenty about Re:Zero but didn't watch it while it was airing. Like a year after it was done I finally took a stab at it, and while I enjoyed it I finished the mansion arc and just... never picked it back up again. I would go on to hear a lot of "it's pretty good but it's not *all that"* (you know how it is when something was super popular for a while) so I never really mustered the passion to go back in. When the director's cut was halfway done I said "fuck it" and started watching the whole thing again. I caught up almost instantly. I was blown away by basically everything past the point where I had stopped, and even with the double-length episodes the weekly cliffhangers were the greatest form of agony. It's not my favorite anime, but I'm so glad I've watched as much of it weekly as I have. It's... an experience.

Honestly just as you said, Subaru's Return by Death was the first hooking point for me as well. But what really makes me love the Re:Zero was episode 13. I was shocked, shed a tear, and smiling at the same time. Thinking that I really love what's the writer doing with Subaru's character. And the anime studio also potrayed it well, animating Subaru to their absolute best to make Subaru appears very, very ugly. And not to mention the voice actor for Subaru, the absolute madlad.
And of course episode 15 quickly replace my best episode at the time shortly before episode 18 aired and made my tears just won't stop while watching.
I remember those weekly of airing Re:Zero was the highlights of my life. I've never been theorizing and thinking about the psychological state of an anime character and the lore of anime as much as I did when Re:Zero aired.
And I remember refreshing for ChibiReviews channel for his review after watching the episode of the week and waiting for his mad theory crafting or dissecting the OP and every scene. Heck even some of his videos were several times longer than the actual episode. And the community was also really fun and ride on the theory hype all the way. Not so much fun these days though. I really loved those times.

Probably pretty high. Season 2 was announced a year ago with rerairings early this year. So, considering the airing of the Director's Cut and how hyped the series was and still is, you were probably recommended the series by a human or robot due to this increased interest.
Unless you're referring to the season 2 announcement last year instead of the airing of season 2 this year. If so, then chances are pretty low.

You are the first RUclipsr I've come across that has mentioned the weekly experience. I watched Re:Zero when it was airing 4 years ago, when it wasn't as popular as it is now. I decided to watch Re:Zero S2 weekly for a few reasons. 1) I couldn't wait any longer 2) I didn't want to be spoiled at all 3) For nostalgia's sake 4) most importantly, because of the cliffhangers, and the hype after each episode, the frantic theory-crafting that ensues, something that can't be experienced when binging the whole series.
Every other anime I watch I can easily binge. Re:Zero is the only anime I can't bring myself to binge. I love reading the theories in MAL every week. I love waiting impatiently for a new episode every week. I can't say that about any other anime.
One thing I miss is the fact that 4 years ago, not many people read the source material, so everyone was surprised, and we had a select few people who were source readers (Mitrospeed) who cleared things up for us. Now everyone and they mama is a source reader who lacks the class to not spoil and give hints everywhere I go. Everyone is watching for the adaptation and not for the mystery and cliffhangers, because they already know what's happening. I waited 4 long years without reading source material and avoiding spoilers just so I could have an authentic reaction to the next season. So I could still be surprised and cliffhanged. But looks like a lot of people buckled.
I didn't understand it in the beginning and thought it was a regular Isekai, a genre I was getting into, but then I saw all these videos from Chibi Reviews (too bad he's a source reader now and only gives dry analysis breakdowns of what happened and isn't in the same world as anime-onliles like me anymore, which leads me to wonder how many hints he's really giving us for what will happen in the LN, which kind of scares me) and Mother's Basement come out that made me Realize what a masterpiece Re:Zero is. I see the psychological aspects, and I see how similar Subaru is to me. Some people would hate seeing themselves as that way, for me it was a relief to see other people who go through the same things. One of two anime I give a 10 on MAL.
Edit: I wrote this before you mentioned Kissanime (RIP) and Mitrospeed and Chibi Reviews lol, looks like we are on the same wavelength
I remember Mitrospeed telling us that was all a prologue and we couldn't really believe it at the time. Now I believe it. This world is so complex.
I read so many comments on the long awaited day of the release of Episode 18, I probably came across your's too. Re:Zero brings people together!

@fricken with a phone I am up to date and love Solo leveling, but I would not watch the anime if it got one.
I hope this explains just how jaded I am with anime. (Btw, dropped LiW after 3 eps.)

@@PhenomSage after a rewatch I genuinely thought it was amazing, I think I might have it in my top 10
Last time I watched it was 2016 when I was still a pretty young so I probably thought it was pretty average but now looking back on it, it was REALLY good.

You know, the ULTIMATE CLIFFHANGER you wanted at the end of season 1 was actually there in the directors cut that was released between season 1 and 2 to rewatch/watch if you haven't yet, to ignite those feels again.

best episodes from the anime are where subaru is like, just human, but also really close to acting crazy. Also betelgeuse. He is really down to earth and chill. You can see where his crazy comes from just by the lines that betelgeuse says at the end. He and subaru both are crazy.

as someone who is getting the weekly experience only from season 2 since I watched the show in two shots of 13 eps man, is good to be alive... the fact that every ep will let you waiting for one frikin week made its hype even bigger
I forced my friend to watch the first ep with me and now he is the one searching ovas and fun facts about the anime! he have a weird crush on Elsa and Beako tho
now we are having the weekly experience lmao

@@PhenomSage I myself didn't know anything about this show either, but I watched whole thing in a day. Lots of times I was close to dropping it, because I loved the premise but hated main character from the very beginning, but this feeling translated nicely in the royal selection scene, and turned me 180.
