i am not very indigenous. i look pretty white, my family considers themselves white, im basically white. but my granny and her ancestors are indigenous Americans. i'm very close to my granny so i have learn a bit of the culture. some of my fondest memories are her telling me teachings and stories, as well as going to a powwow with her. she inspired me to start doing dancing and when i couldn't do dancing anymore i started doing drums. it's been a very big part of my upbringing and i hope for it to be a big part for the rest of my life. i thank all indigenous people for being so open and welcoming and for keeping their cultures rich and beautiful. i will never stop educating myself and others about the history and culture. i highly respect you and i'd love to learn more about a wider range of cultures

Sense schools teach us about ' the English finding American' they should should also teach us about what the English did to the natives and still do to them. The natives were killed stolen and driven out of their home. They took care of this land, respected it and natured it. Now what they get in return is disrespect and hate. They have to live in poor conditions because we are so heartless and selfish. Now we have to find a way to save the earth from our disrespect and neglect. What I guess I'm trying to say is we should really be taught both sides of the story not just one.
    Sorry if I offended anyone.

I'm a freshman in college, I study the history of english speaking countries (among other things) and we have a whole course about American civilization and let me tell you, it's horrible, the "American history" basically starts with Columbus and the only times indigenous people are mentionned, they are painted like the bad guys, they "killed the colonizers" they say. They don't even acknowledge how the colonizers tortured and enslaved indigenous people. I- I can't with that course anymore.
TLDR: college teaches their student that the history of America started with the colonization and everything that happened before is irrelevant. They don't even acknowledge the indigenous massacre.

I am indigenous. There is so much of my history that I do not know but I do know a lot of it isn’t sunshine and rainbows. My tribe, Stockbridge, has moved 7 times. We are originally from New York but are now in Wisconsin. Our language was COMPLETELY lost from the “schools” where we got beaten and killed for speaking our language, doing any indigenous crafts, men couldn’t have their hair long, ect. I am a first line dependent due to blood quantum’s which are/were an European concept to eventually rid of my people. One we still are following. It used to be someone with no native blood could marry in and they would be part of the tribe. Another thing is with the schools, people would alot of the time lie and say they weren’t indigenous, throwing off quantums anyways.
There is a quote (I don’t recall who from) that’s along the lines of “Until lions have historians, humans will always be the heroes”.
This is long, I know. If anyone would like me to restate anything, expand/elaborate, or try to share more, PLEASE let me know! 💕

I’m indigenous, and I’m Genderfluid and they often call people like that “two-spirited”. I cut my hair because it made me feel disphoric and now I feel really bad because I didn’t know that our hair was very important. I also feel bad because I don’t know the language or dances or any of that type of stuff.

I am an enby and had to cut my hair to join the army because I couldn't prove my native ancestry. My mother cried the day I cut it. (I cut it myself before basic training) I was taught that my hair was part of my spirit. One of the atrocities that were committed on indigenous people was to take children cut their hair and send them to white run schools brainwashing them. I have my hair back now and unless I am presenting female my hair is in a braid

Its not one person doing it. Its numerous things and even just freak accidents. Biggest reason is broken homes and no one to teach young girls to not be out with strangers and hardly Native families being strong together (I know because my family is a broken one and I see it on my reservation) there are cases of actual kidnappings and murdered (my mom's childhood friend was recently kidnapped and murdered by a guy who saw her going to her car after she got off of work. She was missing for a week and found in the woods) some of its native on native violence (a 7 year old navajo girl was taken, beaten and raped by a group of other navajo guys who saw her walking home from school) cases of underground human trafficking, cases where it was completely accidental (like there was a girl who went missing on my reservation and they found her after three days. She froze from the winter cold from trying to walk home. Although it was ruled 100% accidental with no evidence of foul play, she was added to MMIW)

I was pulled in a direction towards the woods. When I got to the edge of the farm and I couldn’t go any further I began to cry like sobs and wails but I was biting my glove so no one else could hear me, it was like my heart had exploded. I had no idea why. I don’t have experiences like that.
When I got back to the house and everyone asked me why I was so quiet they could tell I had been crying. Then my husband’s uncle said: “you felt them too, our people, the trail of tears went right through this farm, pass the barn and through the woods.”
I didn’t even know I was near the Trail of Tears, but my blood knew. I had no idea half Oklahoma has been declared a reservation I was crying too!

They moved to our city from the US back in '95 because the lady's son had been offered a job there and wanted to keep his mother close. So she ended up opening a small stall that sells hand crafted jewellery and dream catchers. I also have an amethyst pendant from her stall. He got me it because I have PTSD and suffer from nightmares a lot. He knew a dream catcher is supposed to protect you from bad dreams and so he got me it.

Essentially, dream catchers are to be hung above the bed to catch nightmares and/or negative spirts. Periodically, one is meant to hang it out in the sun to “let out” whatever negativity it caught. By do so, it’s supposed to work better.

As indigenous people, we don’t take our cousins as our cousins, we take them as brothers and sisters because we were all raised around each other. I cut my hair and got it recently styled like this. I’m planning on growing it through the whole summer and keeping it long until another one of us pass. My little brother has a shaggy hair do and my Kohkom (grandma) is planning on cutting it but he tells me that he wants to grow it out so he can have braids.

That all will take while and is a lot but there is A LOT of stuff not taught and a lot of it isn’t peaceful.

I wish I met my great grandma. She was a full blooded Cherokee with blue eyes. Left the reservation at 14. Married a white man and her 4 daughters looked like her but brown eyes, her son, my granddad, came out platinum blonde with blue eyes but tanned super dark. Sadly her daughter's cut her hair that would drag the floor. I'm almost half since my mom is half and my dad is nearly half. I wish I got his black hair lol. I'm offended shamed for learning my ancestors ways. I just look white with no culture. My family doesn't practice any of it or have any motivation to. I'm the only one. Being alone I follow the great spirit, found my spirit guides, protect my room with a dream catcher (I had really bad sleep paralysis), and also found witchcraft. My ancestors ways, and my new ways I found, make me feel so safe. Where I live I may not be able to show my ancestors way, but I love being a part of it with all my heart. My other ancestors had a rough start too. Anyone who read all of that, here's a rose 🌹and Blessed Be 💙
