    Hey Ashley! I'm not being contrary, it's just weird timing for what I came here to tell you: As a heads up, I highly recommend you check out the last 2 videos posted by Jess of Roots and Refuge channel. Poison soil being sold/delivered to unsuspecting farms, homesteads, and individuals. Widespread so far in Southeastern US, the UK, parts of Europe. It will not be limited to these areas as time goes on. The time is now for YT farms, homesteads, and individuals to be a united front, learning about this and working together to find multi-level solutions. No panic, no BS, only facts and problem-solving.

      A few months ago my brother got retail soil that had spores of stinkhorn mushrooms in it. (Northern California)
      Update: I asked my brother for more info. He dug all the infected soil out of the planter box and threw it away. So far the stinkhorns haven't come back. He says, "Sometimes when we buy soil bags there is white fungus in the bag. I never thought twice about it. It's probably no bid deal normally."

    Interesting yet effective self-sufficiency. As you said, just take literally ANY scraps, reduce size as much as possible then toss in preferably filtered and mesh lined water. Mixing daily to keep mold at bay. With "pre-activated" composting medium to boot! :)

    Maybe you can help me with a question. My neighbor has gone crazy over dandelions in my yard, which I let grow in a 5'x200' area for a home to beneficial insects and forage. I'm north of the city in a RM. After doing some reading I think SK has classified them as a nuisance weed which I think is kind of crazy since they are a herb of sorts. Do you know the ins and outs of issues such as this? I do mow them ever few weeks but let go in fall for a over winter spots for bugs. Since doing so, the ladybug population has exploded in my yard and have helped control aphid issues.

    Will this kill Japanese Knotweed? If yes, how to do it. If not, any advise? I have it growing against my foundation and it’s going to cause damage if I don’t get rid of it and I don’t want to use the evil herbicides.

    • @tic857
      @tic857 2 года назад +3

      Probably not. Most Japanese knotweed have extensive root network and any small green fragment can take root. Many remediation efforts either involve repetitive systemic herbicide for several seasons, digging and proper disposal. Please don't toss it in your garbage. There are specific ways you have to dispose of it. Please contact your local waste or environmental department.
      And prevent it from flowering and setting seed. In my area goats have been used because they keep the knotweed down and slowly depletes the root system but even then there are still patches.

Last year… prepare yourself & hold your nose… I covered them in used pine cat litter, sans poop. 🫣 The odor dissipated really fast and it killed off about 90%. Might have worked completely had I kept at it. Future project: soil amendment. I’m in Minnesota and am very happy to have found you! Was previously gardening in zone 3a/b. Now moved an hour south, gained a zone and 4 weeks of growing season. Gardening is easy now! 😆
