- This week’s “Remake of a Classic” comes to us from the British duo, Chad & Jeremy (Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde). First released in July 1964, “A Summer Song” was originally written by Clive Metcalfe and Keith Noble (both of whom had connections with Pink Floyd). Metcalfe wrote the tune and Noble later added lyrics. One night they played the song at a bistro in London. Chad Stuart heard it, liked it, and later re-wrote the middle. "We never thought 'Summer Song' could possibly be a single," Stuart recalled. "It was just a pretty, romantic song. Or so we thought...you never can tell, can you?"
To some extent Stuart was right. That is, as far as the song’s reception in the UK, where it failed to chart. In fact, "A Summer Song" was played on the British show, Juke Box Jury, where guest judge Ringo Starr gave it a thumb’s down, saying it had no potential to become a hit in the U.S.
Well, Ringo got it wrong. Here in the States the song pretty much gave Chad & Jeremy the defining record of their career. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and went to No. 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It also reached No. 7 in Canada. Today, “A Summer Song” is considered one of the signature songs of the British Invasion. The tune has been featured on the soundtracks of Rushmore (1998), The Princess Diaries (2001), and Men in Black 3 (2012). It was also used in the "ESPN's Sports Heaven" commercial that aired during Super Bowl XL, as well as a 2019 TV commercial for Coors Light.
As for Chad & Jeremy, the duo disbanded in 1968. In the early 80s they reunited to record a new album and perform on a multi-band British Invasion nostalgia tour. They got together again in the early 2000s and began touring semi-regularly. Sadly, Stuart died on December 20, 2020 from pneumonia following a fall. Clyde now tours as a solo artist with a backing band, featuring newer music from his multi-album series, The Bottom Drawer Sessions, as well as the regular Chad & Jeremy favorites. He also occasionally tours as part of a duo with one of his oldest friends, Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon fame.
There are actually two versions of this song…one released in the U.K., and one released in the U.S. The UK version opens with Chad and Jeremy trading vocals, while the U.S. single features both men singing in unison and harmonizing throughout. I’ve gone with the U.S. version since that’s the version most people know.
We are so blessed to have grown up with these beautiful songs n musicians 🥰wish todays youth could have experienced the world as we have😢
Excellent! Makes me remember when this was on the radio. Im 69 now, great memories and a great cover
Agree! I'm 66 and this song had a huge effect on me. I initially thought it by that group that was currently exploding all over America and the world, but when I found out it was by a duo called "Chad And Jeremy" I began listening to them as well. Thanks to our friend Russ Willoughby for bringing it back to us.
Thanks so much, Murray and Kirbygene!
Hi Russ. That's terrific. You are inspirational. Great version.
Wow, thanks so much....I appreciate it!
Sir, not gonna call it a 'cover'. Your version of a classic by Chad and Jeremy is spot on. You hit the proverbial nail on the head. I am in awe of your musical talents. Myself a 68+ year old who has played keyboards, guitar and drums. So I know a little bit about music. BUT you are nothing short of amazing. Continued great success. From a fan in suburban Chicago.
Wow Bob, thank you so much; I really appreciate the kind comments!
Terrific cover Russ. Even a string section!
Chad, Jeremy, Peter, and Gordon were always interchangeable to me, like Caesar Romero, Ricardo Montalban and Fernando Lamas. ;-)
LOL
Ok, so that officially made my day, Stan. As always, many thanks!
Ha! That's so funny! Totally agree - every time I hear one of their songs I definitely know it's one of those two groups but I usually have it wrong.
This is a lot better than the original version! These videos are cool as hell. I bet it takes hours to do a video like this
Very nicely performed, sir!
Congratulations to all the boys in the band
Thanks so much....I'll text of them and let them know you liked the video!
Such a "happy feeling" song. It lets me Time Travel back to my early teens. Thanks for such a nice gift!
Thanks, Steve; I really appreciate it!
One of my favorite songs and done so beautifully!
Thank you, Deborah.....so glad you liked it!
Holy crap. Can't get away from your site and all your classic covers. Thank you sir.
Glad you like them! Thanks so much!
Hey Russ what a great job you done on that song. I clearly remember leaving Huntington Beach on the Labor Day weekend in 1964 and listening to this song on radio. However I do not get notifications of your videos and I've been subscribed to you channel for about a year or more. You are the most talented musician on you tube
Thanks, Andy....really appreciate that nice comments. I'm no RUclips expert, but I think you have to somehow turn on notifications. This might help: support.google.com/youtube/answer/3382248?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop
Again, thanks so much!

Happy new year! Thank you very much!
Excellent!!! Nothing more to add.
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much!
Another awesome cover of a wonderful 60s song. Vocals are amazing Russ!! The acoustic is perfect. Definitely in the realm of the seekers
I love The Seekers....Judith Durham has the voice of an angel. Thought about doing one of their tunes, but not sure if a man's voice would work or just sound silly. Anyway, as always I really appreciate the nice comments, Chris. HNY!
@@russwilloughby501 russ you should definitely do a seekers song!! And HNY to you!!! Thanks again for all the effort you put into these!!!
@@mayplace1961 thanks, Chris!

One of my favorite songs, and you did an excellent cover of it!
Many thanks, Tim!
If there ever is a more beautifully-romantic song written in the future, please let me know. Meantime, I will NOT hold my breath! Smashing job, as always! Chad (R.I.P.) and Jeremy would be very proud of this! This song is special, as is your wonderfully-talented rendition.
It really is a beautiful tune, isn't it? So glad you like my version...thanks!
@@russwilloughby501 Oh, I love your entire catalog! But this song is SO beautiful, as you note! Would love for you to to a Moody Blues tune! Nights in White Satin? Tuesday Afternoon? I will send you via FB msg a cover I did of a Moody's song. It got picked up by an internet radio station in Okemos, Mi about a decade ago, and has been heard all around the world. Mind you, I am literally 1% as talented as you!!
Always enjoy your covers Russ, and this one is no exception. Outstanding job!
Thanks so much! Yours are pretty darn good, too!
Russ:
Although I heard this song 2 weeks ago..... I just had to stop back by for another listen. Hearing this song actually "transports" me back in time to a very pivotal point in my life. It is just breath taking to be able to climb aboard your "cover" and travel back for a very quick and very happy visit. Thank you so much for sharing your musical talent with all of us.
Wow, Steve, thanks for the nice comments; glad I could be your musical time machine. Best to you!

Thanks for listening...I really appreciate it!
Good afternoon, Russ and what a fantastic version of a classic tune from one of my favorite 60s duos, Chad and Jeremy…..the care and precision and attention to detail you show for every one of these songs you cover never fails to amaze me, down to the smallest keyboard and horn parts, etc…. and I continue to be absolutely in awe of your musical talent on every single instrument you play as well as your perfect spot-on vocals, both lead and background harmonies… this is by far my favorite new RUclips channel that I subscribe to and follow
Wow, Stephen, thanks so much for all the kind words; I REALLY appreciate it!
Finding this artist is akin to finding a nugget of gold in the cess pool of social media.

I love your work. I come here every day and re-listen/watch my favorites. This one is right up at the top! I'm sure you enjoyed making each and every video but suspect you, too, have favorites, and it looks to me like maybe A Summer Song is one you particularly enjoyed doing. That adds to my enjoyment, too. It's extra fun watching you perform this!
Wow...thanks so much; I really appreciate it!
Nicely done Russ !
Thanks once again for the walk down memory lane.
You bet...thanks so much; I really appreciate it!

one of my favorites! I marvel at your talents!
Glad you like it...thanks so much!
I was born in 1964 when this song was released, almost unthinkable when one thinks about some of the songs released so long ago and still so relevant today. Awesome Russ, keep it coming mate thanks. 😊😊😊
I was also born in '64, and you're right....it's pretty cool how some of these tunes seem timeless. Thanks so much!
@@russwilloughby501 Wow we're both 1964 babies and look how cool we look, age is just a number right lol?
Great🎉!
Oh Russ...I had forgotten how much I loved this song! Thank you!
Yeah, it's a great classic! Thanks so much!
Hey Russ, Absolutely AWE-SOME cover of a great classic...!!! VERY COOL... : )
Thank you kindly!
Good stuff Russ - nice to know people still enjoy the song - 60 years next year!!
Thanks much...it's a timeless classic!
What a great job thanks!
What does Ringo Starr know? Wasn’t this the theme song for the movie, A Summer Place? Great job Russ, you totally captured the mood and vibe of the song ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks a bunch! Actually, "A Summer Place" was released in'59, and the theme was written by Mack Discant and Max Steiner. "A Summer Song" came out in '64. Glad you liked it!
you're a very great musician! So fantastic❤️
Thank you so much!
I am a 14 year old teenager who likes old music like The Cascades, Peter and Gordon, The Beatles and some in the rock genre like Nirvana (big fan of Nirvana) i almost never listen to new music, people say i have dad music taste..
Glad to hear you've latched on to some of the great classics from the 60s and 70s!
You should check out Gary Lewis and the Playboys, if you haven't already. They've got some great songs.
technology seamlessly done...great job on the songs picked and played
Thanks very much, Joe!
A classic!!
Yes it is!
Wow! Great cover!
Thank you!
Good job! Did this tune with a guy as a duo for several years. Thanks for the video!
Many thanks!
New to your channel and I love it!
Welcome....many thanks!
Amazing talent!
Thank you so much 😀
You are just too cool Sir....
Many thanks!
Very nice Russ! I like your Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder shirt.
Thanks! The shirt? Goodwill...$4.99....couldn't pass it up.
Great job! You're quite talented.
Thank you very much!
Damn!!! Thanks guys
really good
I appreciate it, Mark....thanks!
@@russwilloughby501 I know what it takes to do what you are doing because I myself do the same. Record songs playing all the instruments and singing all the parts. My problem, is that I don't have a nice voice like you. Keep it up. I think it keeps us young-ish. My guess is that you are retired and you do this for pleasure. Were you a professional musician. I was a ballet dancer and needed to do something I could work at besides teaching and choreographing. Once in a while I will get a group together and play for Halloween or a birthday. I'm sure you know the grief involved in that lol
Russ and The Wiil-0-Bees !
I'm working my way through your portfolio...have yet to be disappointed.
So glad to hear it. thanks!
You should consider put out them stems for aspiring mixers to play with.
Thanks for the suggestion....my plate is pretty full as it is already. I need more hours in the day.
Fantastic job....
Thank you!
Show, very good.
Thank you very much!
Russ, well done!
Many thanks, Pete!
Simply fantastic!
You told me once the name of the program you use to create the collages, but I can't find that answer anywhere. Would you mind telling me again?
Sure, no problem. I use Movavi. It's about $50
Awesome
thanks!
Really Nice. Do you work this out by ear? Sheet music, tab? I don't imagine there is the full score anywhere.
Thanks! I play mainly by ear, but if I get stuck I turn to RUclips tutorials. For this I simply watched videos of Chad & Jeremy.
Think I'll go burn all my guitars now. I'll never come up to the standard set here.
LOL...glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Kau sangat keren Pak!
Thanks for listening!
thank you Russ
Many thanks for listening!
How old are you when your in the 1970s
Well, I was born in '64....
I must be getting old. When that song was popular, I hated it. Now, Russ has done a better job and I have a delima.
request for pretty woman!
Noted! Thanks for watching!
Pretty woman would be great !
