It isn't quite the same, because freedom of speech is necessary for dissent making these particular persecutions especially egregious but in effect, people imprisoned for using substances are also political prisoners. Using substances isn't hurting others, they're just imprisoned because of the political decision to imprison those who dissent from the political philosophies that find that imprisonment convenient or desirable.
If never understood why they call Asange a traitor. Firstly he's Australian he doesn't owe the USA shit.

Ellsberg did not go to Jail, as it, although shocking, it was not against the law. It is true that he fully expected to go to jail.
And other dissidants at that time also expected to go to jail. For instance, Noam Chomsky expected to go to jail for his speaking out against the war in Viet Nam. And we thought we were living in "interesting times". Relativel to today, those were peaceful orderly times.
A little "love not war" would be welcome these crazy days of common extrajudicial executions and prosecutatorial overreach.

Glenn has these weird Twitter breakdowns nearly every week where he defends the far right and leaked private messages with Chelsea Manning to get back at her because they had a disagreement. He would throw Snowden under the bus too if he gets his feelings hurt by him.

Seems clear to me that the whole purpose of this massive “intel” warrantless data scoop on US citizens is specifically so that the authoritarians in power can flip back thru the “find a crime” Rolodex on any & every citizen who makes waves at any point in the future & thumb a past crime committed & unbeknownst to them, documented. Or to ensure that a perfectly good conspiracy charge just waiting for it’s statute to expire, never goes to waste etc. etc. Therefore by virtue, unknowingly to us (you & I) relegating practically every one of us to becoming a potential criminal for something obscure & in our distant past.
And if that weren’t possible because of expired statute limitations, a good ole public shaming smear campaign via leaked documents outlining past actions, affiliations, social media posts made as a much younger, naive person, and that maybe don’t align at all with your current, older & wiser mindset etc. is as effective a deterrent as the threat of incarceration.
Something like this on DN, which has lacked teeth for far too long? Well, I might start watching again... I sincerely hope this heralds your return to journalism.

Assuming by some incredible revolution the NSA was abolished and with it the whole surveillance system that oppresses individuals, and this was done to save the current form of democracy you have now,---the right of free speech, right of property, right of security, you will still come up short of a complete and a full democracy.
