I've spent over $1,000 in like 8 months for 1 hamster. She lives in the pax with a bunch of enrichment (which also costs a lot) but its definitely worth it to see my precious baby thriving 🥺

Within 40 seconds of having a hamster I had spent 100 on food. Toys.. Bedding.. Hell I just brought a habit trail pet 'cage' for them... I'm gonna use it as a toy, it was buy it for 10, or let the person behind me buy it and use it as a cage..

I spent over £1000 on my female Syrian in the course of a few weeks as she was never happy. It was an emotional time as I worried she would never be happy.
Even though it was costly at the time, am glad I did it because now she is super happy, never tries to escape and is just the sweetest fur friend I have. :)

I made a DIY Pax cage and got all kinds of things and enrichment plus 40-50 cm of mixed bedding (kaytee and hemp) plus all the food....I think my hamster cost me between 130-140 USD for the basics to start with, then every month of the first half a year I kept adding things to her enclosure, plus the hamster purchase that was around 30 USD. For a first hamster, first year (she lived a bit less than two years), was at least 500 USD, hamster not included. I also own an adult cat and two huskies and THOSE costs are way more grand. Not impossible for a single-living person like me, but definitely requiring a proper budget each month and especially when going on vacation.

What most people don't get is that pets are a luxury, not a right. If you want to have a pet you need to be able to give them proper care. If you can't afford proper care, you can't afford a pet. It might sound cruel to say that but it is more cruel to get an animal you are unable to care for. Of course, there are ways to save on your pets like DIY, using second hand items, finding everyday items at Ikea and other stores that can be used as hides, etc. and that's completely fine. But, of course, there will be a bunch of things you can't save on. Thank you for bringing awareness to how expensive pets really are! ❤😊

I am curious why you don’t go to a feed store and buy a bale of hay vs the bags at the pet store. For a 40lb bale of orchard grass it is about $10usd. You could put that in a plastic tub and save quite a bit on hay and it would most likely be fresher.

I see that gerbils have the same needs as hamsters, and was wondering if you could make a video educating on gerbils, so I (and others) can confirm we’re caring correctly for them.(I was hoping for information like what size tanks/cages they would need, what foods/bedding, and what activity tools, or at least types of these items that suit them best).

Hamsters really aren’t cheap pets. Both of my hamsters enclosure together cost over $600 and if you add up all the food, toys, bedding and vet appointments it goes way over $1000! It’s definitely worth it but people really should be more aware of how expensive, not only hamsters, but other pets are too. Anyway great video🥰

I used to have a mouse and she sadly couldn’t be paired again after losing her sister… so the cost to make my bedroom safe for her also added up quickly.
To clarify: I tried to pair her multiple times but she wouldn’t accept any of them… I used the divider in a new cage so it was neutral ground. It was the biggest space I could get too. She always rejected all of them… she was already up there in age and grief probably contributed to it. I had a more experienced mouse keeper helping me and he was the one who owned every mouse I tried to pair her with. Eventually we had to agree it was too much stress on her… she was very well socialized and handled often and was very social so I was able to keep her company very often. She had out of her cage time under supervision and usually she loved to sit on my shoulder. I miss you Fitz… 🕊️
She passed away from what we think was pyometra. I didn’t recognize the signs quickly enough and she didn’t make it to her vet appointment. I’m still unwilling to own mice again because her passing was too hard on me. I blame myself for not realizing she wasn’t gaining weight, she was actually in need of medical attention. It was a stupid mistake and I wish I could go back and do things differently

    • @tiffanyney4011
      @tiffanyney4011 Год назад +1

I'm so sorry. But don't try to blame yourself for things that have already passed. I have done the same thing with my first hamster cuddles. But even though I was upset about my mistakes, I did get more hamsters, and I thought I would never even be able to care about any others again... but if I would have never gotten more, I would not have the hamster that I have right now, and I would have missed out on owning him. And I would not have learned how to keep going, even when times are hard.

Very good point, if you love your pets, you wouldn’t mind spending money on them BUT it must be taken into serious consideration before you really decide to have a pet.
I’m from HK and it’s SUPER expensive to see a vet here, no matter vets for dogs & cats that are more common, or the exotic vets for hamsters, bunnies etc.
I had my hamster in the most difficult time in my life, I spent over USD2500 for vet fees alone for her, as she had to undergo a surgery when she was 1yr old, and when she turned 2 yrs old she suffered a heart failure and the last month she was with us required intensive care by the vet and it costed a lot.
But I didn’t regret for getting her and spending all those money, but instead it was her to accompany me in the years after 2019 when the basic human rights of freedoms of speech, press & elections here have been completely taken away by the Chinese Communist government, and then there was COVID that we had over 3 years of border close that the 7M people could only stuck in this tiny city without any traveling. I was just super grateful to have her in my life and she’ll always be my most loved and unforgettable pet.

When I worked at Petco I found out that if theres a hole in something it gets thrown away, so I sometimes find them with small holes and take a $30 bag of fluff for free. I check the contents to make sure theres no bugs or anything that live in the stuffing, but usually it’s completely fine! I recently got some crushed walnut shells substrate as well as coconut fiber substrate (I usually only get the eco earth coconut substrate but I wanted to try more textures for him to explore) my longhaired syrian rlly loves digging thru the textures and foraging the nuts i hide in there

I've had to make him a temporary living area so the little fella can actually MOVE around. As he came to me in rather a rush, I've flat- out ordered him an aquarium (100 cm) and all he needs in his new home.(he came in a 19" glass case!!!😢) It's been so stressful for both my new family member and myself. I dare not add up my spending at present. (If i hear a loud thud that will be my bank manager hitting the floor!!😂)
I also have 3 guinea pigs. My Furry Family are my world and they come first, second and last. It's been the same for decades and nothing is going to change 😊. There's nothing more satisfying than watching our animals enjoying a happy, healthy, and fulfilled life. Love your videos, they're really informative, entertaining and make me chuckle too! 😂 👏

I know you have waddles and I was wondering what the measurements to his cage are. I was looking into building a 1,000 square inch cage but I am not sure if it is large enough. What do you think?

Hi Victoria! I just had a question because i am worried about my hamster. So she is a winter white dwarf hamster and her furr was brown, but it is starting to turn white. My question would if if this is normal? I love your videos and the sarcasm 🤍

Hello Victoria, nothing to do with your video even if it is incredible as always I wanted you to know that you helped me and my hamster a lot because before my hamster lived in an 80x50 cage with 3 centimeters of bedding with a wooden hiding place with splinters, no sand or sometimes strawberry scented sand and very dusty but when I discovered your videos from your youtube channel everything changed for my hamster they now live in a 110 x 50 x 50 cage with sand red (the one from the desert for reptiles) coconut peat substrate and ceramic hiding places, wooden house with 6 bedrooms AND A 28 CENTIMETER DIAMETER WHEEL... anyway I wanted to say thank you for all your help and my hamster too, good day to you (or night....) :)

I spent over 3k dollars on my single dog in one week only due to vet visits and her having cancer (she's ok now, surgery went well). Sometimes it'll be a lot of money flying out of your bank account all at once instead of smaller purchases here and there. I think people forget that when it comes to owning pets.

Could you make a video showing how you make homemade hamster food? I was not happy with any of the mixes at the store, but I found one that is not too bad. But I would much rather make homemade hamster food.

I have a 20 gallon tank which I know isn’t the biggest, so I bought a large playpen for my hamster to play in where I put all her toys and enrichment for her to play, but is this stressful to take her out of her cage? I have 7 inches of bedding in the cage. Thank you!!

hamsters really shouldnt be taken out during the day thats when they sleep. they are active during the night so unless you stay up all night with them, they need to be in at least a 40 gallon tank with the proper enrichment :)

@@VictoriaRaechel I think my cat cost a little over $1000 for blood work + dental, but the poor kitty had to get a bunch of teeth removed (it was soon after we got her from the shelter) so that probably increased the cost!

@@makerbell1688Most dental cleaning procedures for cats range between $600-$800 in Canada! It only becomes more expensive if the cat needs extractions or has any kind of abscess/infection. It also highly depends on your location and the size of the veterinary hospital! :)
