They're (very) slowly learning how to build a functional game. Kudos to them for continuing to try instead of taking the money and running.
They might even have a full game up and running before Star Citizen does!
No kudos. They're doing just enough to avoid a lawsuit. They promised something that they didn't have the skills to deliver on. Hell, they promised something *nobody* has the skills to deliver on.
@@segfault_000 No, OP is right. On Kickstarter, I find fulfilling promises is more rare than scams, lies, mismanagement and just reality hitting hard. Get that notion of legal action for failed crowdfunds out of your head, such things are expensive and no one will care. These guys seem at least enthusiastic about what they are doing. Treat it as a reality show were some overly optimistic guys are trying to build their dream, with unintentional hilarity along the way.
"functional"
@@dragons_advocate it looks like something no one would have played 30 years ago and has less basic intent or features it barely qualifies as a game but that's the legal bullshit part
I'm kinda sad, to be honest; if they'd just tried to run, they could have been sued. Best outcome, then...or at least the most entertaining. At this rate, they'll make what's technically a game you can play, and they'll get off.
Sharks don't have bones you see. They have cartilaginous skeletons.
But was this deliberate or pure chance....?
came here to say the same thing, though definitely not intentional from the devs
They finally answered the age-old question, "How I mine for fish?"
3 Hours to farm around for Fish bones in order to create a basic Simple Pickaxe as the player's first weapon? You must be kidding me. What are they afraid of that the player will neglect the crafting system that they can't let the player even have a basic weapon in the game to start off with? That they gotta spend 3 hours to put an ax together.
50 in 1 chance to find a Fishbone. By digging under the water? Now the shoreline be all full of holes.
In my game I only make the player farm around for things in order to level themselves up on what they
currently have or to complete a task or puzzle..
They should just leave both options open, to dig under the water as well as just kill the fish to get
the fish bone.
Sounds like its turning into one of those games where someone has to write a walkthrough in order to play it.
The more time passes with Dreamworld, it seems - while not competent - at the very least incrementally more functional. Funnily enough, the opposite is true with New World - Do you think we will reach a point when the two are equal? :D
Not the type of equality thats a good thing for anyone but yeah...eventually they will level out for a bit.
Unless New World let's me ride a deer then NOPE.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
Sounds hilarioud
New DreamWorld
You spent half the episode getting the items you needed to craft the item you needed only to find out you didn't need it!!! Comedy at its best!! You should do standup, my man!
It honestly feels like crafting for the sake of it, it's over-complicated.
yeah, its basic game design to keep it simple.
While the craftong UI of DontStarve is utter shit, at least the crafting cecipes are simple and well thohght through.
initially, 7days2die had a minecraft-like crafting menu, where you firtst select a recipe and then drag and drop all ingredients, but on a 5x5 grid. This was just ridiculous and dumb and way too distracting.
GuildWars does good craftiing, where EVERYTHING disassembles into scrap-componentzs, that can stack much higher, and that can be reassembled, but more often just end up sold. too many games lack a global-disassemble.
This is the vlog of a man who goes from despising Dreamworld into being their number one content creator.
I really appreciate the shift you're taking in praising them for their small victories. It's very admirable for a creator whose momentum is built off of saying very little positive about this project to admit when the devs have pulled up their bootstraps and addressed some of the more glaring issues. Obviously they're not off scot-free just yet, they've got a mountain of work to climb if that's going to be the case. I just wanted to say I admire the impartiality, Callum. Love the vids!
If everything goes south you can always start a channel trying to physically build stuff following Dreamworld recipes.
I predict greatness.
Re fall damage based on timing how long you're in the air... wouldn't it be easier to just use the speed at which you hit the ground? The game's tracking that anyway, and that's how the real world does it. Plus, it allows you to trivially add damage if you run headfirst into walls at high speed, which is always entertaining.
Stop making sense
You would also need to account for the angle in which you hit the ground to avoid damage from jumping while running. But that might cause problems when you have very uneven ground, if you only look at a single point of impact. So you would need to calculate an average ground orientation within an area around the coordinates of the collision.
Jedi Knight did that and it worked amazing. If you're blasted at high speed against a wall, you're dead, too!
9.8m/s squared is a difficult concept
The speed when you hit the ground is 0, it needs to find out the speed before you hit the ground, and that's difficult to do.
to make the table, you need the tree, to make the tree you need the seed, to get the seed you need the gyroscopic machinator-3000, and a cup of camomile
Feature, not a bug. It's an in-mechanic quest to gain your first pickax.
It has an incentive for exploration and discovery!
The non-intuitiveness of processes is lore. You ARE in a dream.
Maybe its just because since Dreamworld, I've learned about stuff like Elyira, Eart2, etc., but honestly in the genre of 'kickstarter disaster/scam', this is the only one that's actually attempting to be a game in any capacity and actually making tangible progress towards becoming something playable.
I mean, its never going to be game of the year, and many people still got scammed out of ludicrous amounts of money, but I could see this rising to the level of "Better than expected $5.00 steam game". Damning with faint praise maybe, but it is legitimately and strangely heartwarming to see the dreamworld devs go from "absolutely no clue about what I'm doing" to "My first unreal engine game" in realtime. If this were a free or super cheap project I'd have no reservations about cheering them on.
Its just a shame that the whole thing was built on promises they had no way of keeping, false representation, and a host of other shit on top of fleecing people out of large sums of money. I'm inclined to attribute many of their foibles to ignorance rather than malice, but that can't excuse _all_ of their behavior.
6:07 Fun fact: If you pivot 180° on all 3 axes, you wind up exactly where you started.
So they start on nonsense leading to nothing and end up on nonsense leading to nothing in their crafting. Exactly how it is expected to be with Dreamworld.
How did I not catch this lol. I know it, yet my brain just filtered it out as just yet another insult. It's like when people say their life turned around "360 degrees", if I think about it I know it's wrong, but somehow my brain just filters it out lmao
Callum is the best.
Aside from that I have to say that watching gameplay footage makes me feel physically ill.
Every aspect of the game visually feels like it could give me a disease if I look at it for too long.
Oh nice, thanks for putting all the videos in a playlist. Now I can enjoy binging them. :)
Imagine Dreamworld devs pulling a Realm Reborn and actually making the best game out there
That would be one hell of a redemption story
with a dev team that codes 1 thing a week. Might happen in 2300 or so
Well there should be actual Devs then. Idk maybe they could take a few of those millions they made from kickstarter and hire actual game devs and not someone who browses unreal asset store all day xD
Oh geez, one looks at the video and i can tell what tutorials they did on RUclips to implement these systems
The amount of leeway you give this game is astounding. I would be tickled pink if I took hundreds of thousands of dollars and promised an earth-shattering MMO with brand new tech that allows infinite clients. Then, I produced this pile of shit and one of my harshest critics was lauding the fact that fall damage works and even though farming crashes every client at least it is a neat idea for a mechanic after 27 releases.
It's not that you're wrong, that's entirely true. But I think it would be hard to keep making videos though while keeping the emotional tone based on the initial scandal the whole time.
I think there comes a point where bemused and morbid curiosity takes over. I'm glad he's still covering it, because I'm curious to see how it develops over time but not willing to give them my money or support.
@@michaelkenner3289 wholeheartedly agreed. It's still garbage when stacked up against even the cheapest MORPGs out there (not even Massively Multi-player, just Multi-player), but it's just one of those things were credit, though slight, is given where due.
Clearly Zack has never played Minecraft, his resource gathering ideas are so idiotic.
I'm looking forward to the documentary made by Down the rabbit hole, using Callum's video's.
I love seeing this game develop, personally. Like it's literally forming before our very eyes, very slowly, and already looks 10x better than it did at its alpha "launch".
Kinda like Minecraft. Of course, Minecraft had the decency to be free until they had something you could argue was a complete game, so...
It's nice that you can get help from the Dreamworld community when you get stuck! And thanks for spending so much time in the game trying out its new features. I know I would definitely not have that much patience!
2:24 that's funny, seeing how sharks are some of the only cartilaginous fishes - as opposed to bony fishes, which make up the majority. Sharks literally don't have bones! This is unintuitive from game design perspective since a gamer's first instinct in a scenario where regular bones are gathered by killing animal mobs is to seek fish mobs and fish mobs in form of sharks exist, but I like that they at least didn't do a biological derp and made sharks that drop bones 😁
2:24 That makes actually a lot of sense because sharks dont have bones Callum haha they dont belong to the bony fishes
Honestly turning your base into Chernobyl sounds like a good way to grief people.
I honestly can't tell at this point if these guys aren't trolling on like a whole new level because some of these things you couldn't even make up. Lmfao these guys are top tier goofballs.
The introduction of new features is soooo random. I wonder whether they even have some sort of design process and design plan or even a documentation. This "project" is so hillarious. Reminds me of projects kids would do.
How did we get so lucky to get two of the greatest commentators on this stuff to release two of the best stories today ?!? kira on Earth 2 and now Callum on dream world yay!
any chance we could get a video just showing off all the crazy recipes this game has? there doesn't seem to be a video showing off all of them that i can find. I'm aware the recipes change sometimes (as they do in all online games), but it would still be pretty entertaining to watch.
Wont be long now until Callum tells us he has been hired by dreamworld as chief Dev lol
I don't know what's funnier. The fact that this project went from scam to decent or that Callum is enjoying playing it. Either way, I'm in tears.
"decent" is a generous description
If this is decent then my dog’s shit must taste amazing
this is far from decent, but at least the company is not a rape dungeon.
If you don't smell the pure unadulterated sarcasm coursing through this video you must be American
Its passable a college project at best.
It's like he we learned various systems at put them together. Please give us an a
Behold, the return of "moon logic" to game design! And here I thought we'd quashed that nonsense back in the late 90's.
Callum: „YAY! FINALLY! AFTER 5 HOURS, I GOT MY PICKAXE!"
Pickaxe: „I will break after 1 hit, MUHAHAHHAH!"
I'm convinced Callum Upton is Dreamworld's biggest fan.
I’m getting Mortal Online 2 flashbacks 😱. From Josh’s video because I’ve never played that game myself. 😅 But not even MO2 was this unintuitive. 😳 But hey, at least the mount seems to be functional lol. Brave Callum went the long way round and was rewarded with, you guessed it! Another bug. 👀 I appreciate his efforts because all this work is actually going to help this game become, a game! Thank you for sharing Callum. Stay safe. ❤️
in minecraft modding terms we call this microcrafting hell
The fact you speak out every emoji cracks me up
"I killed many sharks unttil I realised that's not how you get fishbones"
Weeeeell... Technically sharks are cartilaginous fish. They don't have bones made of calcium 😂
2 and a half hours looking at a knock off riddler.
You're a patient man.
Who else here remembered to turn down their volume to '0' during the VERY LOUD pre-video countdown? ^.^ x
I picked up an audio-compressor module for my browser instead.
Can't people just play a game like Valheim to scratch the itch this game seems to be trying to scratch?
didn't they claim that they can have thousands of player in multiplayer? :D
I cannot believe you are taking this game seriously and actually discussing it's mechanics
Seems Dreamworld is going for epic levels of moon logic.
The designers learnt to program, but never took the time to learn basic science/general knowledge.
Actual conversation...
"How is coal made?"
"I don't know, but it's got to be something to do with trees, coz you burn it"
Callum, I can't get enough of you can those videos be longer please !
When your hair is red, you look like Jim Carey Riddler from that old Batman movie.
Your dear mount is really cute!
If you've ever watched the Primitive Skills channel, growing crops and making tools is actually easier in real life than in Dreamworld.
Went into this thinking they couldn't make farming more convoluted than it is in Kenshi. I have to congratulate them on managing it!
To be fair, sharks not having fish bones in them _is_ logical. Sharks do not have bones. Only cartilage. Then again, knowing everything else, they likely got that right by accident.
AI voice caught in 1080p
Started playing Vintage Story.
F'ing love the F out of that game. I Love survival stuff and mid-evil stuff... but by far the coolest thing, the handbook.
It explains different game topics, and all of the items. You can learn everything you need to know, right there in the game. I've never played minecraft maybe there is a system there too, but that single feature makes it absolutely awesome just to play and learn without wasting hours and hours like this. Cheers Cal!
Nice video. Now I'm off to smelt some rice for supper.
Hi, tried following this, as someone coming in later, and I noticed the playlist is not sorted on release dates, so it's effectively useless, and I had to resort to the main Videos page and just clicking them in order. I think you can fix this with a single click if I understood some instructions for creators correctly.
This looks like what we can expect from New World in 2022.
@Callum Upton Interestingly, seems historical steel's were made with charcoal rather than coal. Goes to show that what's 'intuitive' to gamers isn't what makes sense, what's realistic, what actually happens. It's what we've come to expect from OTHER video games, popular films and other popular media. This is pretty unfortunate because it makes games that subvert these expectations frustrating and difficult, even when the conventions didn't make any logical sense in the first place.
I can't believe it's becoming vaguely playable
It's literally turning into Asset Flip Minecraft but without programming themselves, they will never create iconic feature like Creeper or Redstone through bugs.
Recipes are crazy because this is a DREAM world xD
It would be hilarious if they kept on working on this game for like a decade and it would end up being an amazing game at the end.
Thats a nice thought but its not gonna happen. Look at No Mans Sky for example. Did they do a great job in making the game better? Yes but its still just "decent" not great, and they had far more dev support and money to work on it than Dreamworld ever will. This will only ever be decent at most.
@@kidoren1395 that and these guys "code" in like maybe 3 features per month and end up breaking half the game each update so it'll probably take till 2200 for it to reach that point
We're going to completely encircle the main city in crash bushes so that nobody can enter or exit.
Should make it a maze lol. One wrong step and you are done haha.
Tf!? You need fish to make a shovel? Who thought of this shit?!
Maybe the reason why everything seems to have some kind of logical connection but never quite making sense is because like a dream, everything is smooth enough to not jar you awake, but nonsensical enough to make no sense when you wake up. Welcome to the dream world 😂
Nice day for grinding, ain't it! Huh-huh!
Over time this game has really started to grow on me, the jank disaster that it is.
I wouldnt play it mind you but it's got a bizarre charm that's starting to grow on me
a selfie cam fix is pretty much what dream world needed xD lol sure
Sharks don't have bones. So the reasoning that you'd get fish bones from them, wouldn't stand.
King Callum with another fucking banger boys Let's GO
to tan leather is where you would need something that has tannines in it, like ... the oak wood you couldn't use to smelt stuff?
To be fair to dreamworld sharks don’t have bones. Their skeletons are made of cartilage.
The whole bone pickaxe thing couldve been a good way to make you explore the world, a good introduction of sorts, but they've fucked it up so badly.
Glad your the one playing this and not me. =D
So this is Wiki the game,
a game that makes utterly no sense to the point that you need to check guides and wikis to progress.
Fitting!
"This is where the problem starts"
Idk man, it seems like this problem started quite some time ago lmao
I think the idea of resources being available only in some areas and biomes is actually neat... it's a bit realistic, it encourages exploring to see more biomes instead of just one "base" area with every resource, and it will probably encourage in-game trading whenever that is a thing. They just have to have sensible reasons and clearly explain it somewhere.
Of course, this shouldn't really be the case for any basic tier-1 stuff, like the fish bones.
Good luck finding 2 people at once playing this game unless you're a streamer to trade with lololol
@@Jabarri74 This is true. For it to work, there has to be a player base. And, I mean, I'm not going to buy Dreamworld.
It's fine for fish bones to be like that, the problem is they shouldn't be a basic tier 1 item.
I've just realized Dreamworld is basically a $30 Roblox game
Of course sharks don't give fish bones, they are neither fish nor have bones
This resource system is like 2010 Minecraft if Notch was a sadist.
It makes sense that sharks don't drop fish bones... because sharks don't have bones. ;)
Planting crops makes a valley of death?
Sasuga dreamworld
They are better at adding matching emojis to their changelog than making content, nice.
Fishbone is a sick band.
Fall damage is based on height difference between jump off point and landing point. They did remember to add a check for negative height differences, right?
Why did you ask? You know the answer is of course they failed to.
@timed fall damage: The first Rainbow Six game (or second, no idea. I think it was called Rogue Spear) was the first game I saw this. There you were even "still falling" when you were on top of a teammate. If you climb on a teammate, you're dead. Haven't givem them another chance ever since ^^
games gonna look like the movie holes
To be fair sharks actually do not have any bones, they have cartilages in the place of bones so it kinda makes sense that they wouldn't drop fish bones. (Sharks aren't considered fish either)
The rest... Well, it doesn't make much sense.
Im not 100% sure but if i remember right they used seeweed as tanning agent in past times
You make this dreadful game a lot of fun to watch!
"Killed many sharks to get fish bones."
I know your not an ichthyologist, but sharks do not have bones.
some of the material icons are from another game called Thea 2 the gathering
I mean if communicated having silver only spawn in a very specific place actually sounds cool like some old miners wisdom but I would make a few alterations,
1. Have a small amount of silver still spawn everywhere
2. Make silver never nesserasry if anything essential
This game looks really good!
hahahahahaha… you’re too funny man!
dream world no no just pain
no, youtube, i do not need to see this in 480p. 160p is more than enough for this schlock
ha this is an unexpected devolpment
Lol... plant these permanent trees.... its gameplay....*this seems a lot like me developing the game* 🤔... lol you made dream Chernobyl... thats awesome.
To be fair sharks don’t have bones. They’re a cartilaginous fish.
Edit: now I see this has been pointed out by others. Oh well.
Lemme remake Bone Pic Crafting Recipe
Bone pick = 5 Bones (For handle and Spike thing) and 1 Grass (Rope to connect the bones)
great video 💪💁♂️
