  • Today Rocky discusses the recent film "You Can't Run Forever" starring J.K. Simmons. The film is meant to be a thriller film, yet it continuously plays out in the most boring ways possible. For the first hour the film's scenes drag on forever, feeling like a horrible invasion movie even though there's no home invasion till the end SORRY FOR THE SPOILER IT BE WHAT IT BE. Regardless, the second half of the film is a horribly nonsensical breakdown of what appears to be happening. The entire thing is SO straightforward that it actually makes no sense. The entire time until the last moment I was thinking to myself "this is the moment where they have the big reveal to make it make sense", but that moment never came. This film was disappointing as a fan of J.K. Simmons, but it's disappointing just as a thriller film. The character has no consistency, and his motive is so thin it would blow away on a slightly windy day. For the most part I kept thinking as well "why is J.K. Simmons even here"... the answer is the director and writer is his wife. So, that's why he's in this film. The film has nothing visually or story wise that made it redeemable in any way. What do you guys think? Did you see this film? Why do you agree with me so hard? Let us know what you thought, and any suggestions of what to watch in the comments below. Thanks for watchin!

    Sorry to have to agree with you. I had A LOT of hope for this, especially it was a family project with his wife and daughter (son too, I think) but it needed to be more conceptualized. He snaps after being disillusioned w student apathy and his wifes infidelity but then he'd suddenly a proficient killer. And yes, his killing is so arbitrary and prolonged.
    I really like Simmons acting and his choices but this just didn't make sense.
    Seems like a current trend to geeenlight movies despite not completely ideas brought to term bc names like Simmons are attached. Can't fault him for trying to work w family but this could have had a more thorough effort for sequencing and more complete character development

    I love JK Simmons he's incredible actor but this film is 🗑️. I might have to come up with a name for untalented spouses being married into the business maybe something like "Adopted Nepo" .

    💯 nonsense - don't pay to watch this or you'll regret it. 1st 10 mins is ok then gets really stupid. Guess the star needed to pay bills.

      It was JK Simmons wife who wrote and directed the film. We're guessing he did it because he just wanted to support her.

      @@SmokinSessions Ohhhh! That explains alot. It's pretty bad and weird. The dialogue - awful. Plot - pretty predictable. Only useful bits were 1st 10 mins (gas station), minute where his breakdown is explained (btw doesn't help with building sympathy for character) and fight near ending.
      And your review was spot on. Everything in the woods (most of the film) - unnecessary.

      Literally, and the mushroom thing was shoehorned in to explain her trauma. Which didn't actually matter. Also yeah it did feel like we were supposed to I guess understand the character, and that's why they explain his reasoning. But the explanation is so nonsensically psycho idk how he didn't already go on a murder spree years ago

    I was so confused by a few things in this movie. The "sister" with the blond hair looked JUST like the girl in the class who blasted JK about "those that can't do." I thought that was a tie. But maybe not? Also when JK got on the bike there was a picture of a man and a girl which at the end the blond also had a picture that looked the same. Anyone else see that?! I was like "what?!" Is that all correct?
    Well, I had to know so I went through the movie grabbing screenshots- the girls are different and the pictures are different. So now I know 100% that this movie is DUMB af. Pointless. Ugh.

      Lmao I completely understand your frustration. While I hadn't made any errors in who the characters were, the entire time I was racking my brain going over possible twists and saying to myself THIS IS THE BIG REVEAL... but the reveal never came. I have seen much worse movies such as Old 2021 which left me in a puddle of tears and utter confusion. This movie is like baby steps compared to Old regardless lf Old had a twist. Anyway 0/4 JK Simmons jus did it for his wife

    • @SmokinSessions

      I say it deeper in the video. But it's literally only that the girl looks like his wife that cheated on him that he killed. Thats it. Literally no other reason

    *Extreme Social Darwinism* - much as if he was deeply immersed in the book “might is right.”

    • @SmokinSessions
      @SmokinSessions  17 дней назад +2

      Dunno if you're saying this is the theme, but if it is they did a pretty bad job of showing it lol. Bro was just mad his wife cheated on him and he wanted to take that anger out. If anything it just feels like a sad incel style film

    • @dennisyoung4631
      @dennisyoung4631 17 дней назад +1

      @@SmokinSessions have not seen the film, only a few excerpts, chiefly from this vid. The one part where he spoke of competition, and a few others like it, implies strongly that he has an intense belief in Social Darwinism - which the book mentioned previously *IS* about.
      Note that doing as he did *also* supports this thesis - much as if he were General Zaroff in “the most dangerous game.”

    • @SmokinSessions
      @SmokinSessions  17 дней назад +2

      I can say with a good bit of certainty that this film *ISN'T* about that. I can fully see your point, and I can totally understand that for a man to somewhat randomly go on a killing spree that he might have a core tenant of extreme social darwinism. I can even see how with the cheating in mind, how he might see this as a fault of society and that if we went by the might is right ideal then taking out the wife would make sense. However he goes out on a murder spree of random people, not for any ideological point but out of anger. Theres even a line where he said the reason he's killing doesn't matter. A man with an ideology typically wouldn't say that. I would accept killing for fun even as matching up with the extreme social darwinism aspect but he simply kills from anger it seems.
      Also I wanna add that in the film he chases down a girl that looks vaguely like his wife. The theme of the film is simply that one can engage in nonsensical violence when they feel they've been wronged enough. Based on the way they have him talk about women, and the fact he kills more women than men we can also deduce that something is being said about mens tendency towards violence and how that can be brought onto many women by the acts of one. Altho this theme is flimsy and honestly just doesn't work well in this film.
      So really what I'm saying is I get your point and some of the very basic plot points might lead in that direction, but I would implore you to watch the film and I think you'll see that the themes here really aren't any ideological view of might is right.
      Also I just wanna say as well, I love the most dangerous game. I do bring it up here, and thats because Simmons loves the story and because chasing a human through the woods and hunting them always leads back to imagery of that story. At the start I thought that the story would go that way, however by the end we find this ain't for sport or for fun or for revenge or even for an ideology but because of a perceived anger and similarity to his wife. It was disappointing to see the potential theme and reference to the most dangerous game get flushed down the toilet.
      But alas, maybe his next film will be better
