Cut your grass in late afternoon and put your sprinkler on it for an hour and you will have no problems regardless of sunny weather next day! Your lawn looks great by the way!
If you put some plugs or sod strips along the front side walk and curb, it will spread fast. (Fast being relative since we're talking about Zoysia) The heat from the concrete will heat the adjoining soil and allow the Zoysia to green up faster in the spring which will aid in a faster spread. Try it in a small area. I'm sure you'll like it. Thanks for the Central Sod Farm source.
I bought a 1lb bag of zenith zoysia grass seed. I had about 6 seeds grow and some crab grass that shouldn't have been mixed in with the seed. It is still filling in 5 years later. Zoysia does really well in phoenix, turns green in February and brown at the end of November.
Many times the bags of Zenith Zoysia at the local big chain hardware stores is mixed with mulch. You actually get very little zoysia seeds. The ones I bought were 98% pure. That's important because you need to put it down heavy to get the feeling completely within the first year. I've really had a complete lawn the first year with only a few spots that filled in the next. Also if you have some bare spots just make your own plugs out of your existing lawn and fill in the bare spots keeping the plugs fairly close together so that when they send out runners they can interconnect.
hancockseed.com/ call to make sure they have new seed. and www.seedland.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=Seedland&Category_Code=ZOY seedland.com has both types and shows new seed for this year
I remember when you made the video right after the cold and your grass was brown and your neighbors was lush and green now look...you did good my friend can we get a 2016 spring video...lol
+Corey Wilder Well Compadre Zoysia is seed only so it takes a long to to get established, a few years filling in, unless you over seed. Zenith we got in sod rolls, very easy. If you can find Zenith sod is easy to put down. When you get done the cost is lower then seed when you figure the baby sitting you have to do for seed. Rating them I would not buy Meyer 51. Compadre and Zenith Zoysia look better, hold up better. But in my opinion Compadre and Zenith are equally rated
+Tom Hernandez I found the seeds, about $200 a bag but its self repair grass so never have reseeded. A challenge to get started. You can not let is dry out when young in anyway or it dies. When it gets older with deep roots it can handle drought. But it does look nice I have people stop by to ask how I did it !
Yes..you said too tall. In the back near water it get very hot. Found it taller did better in full sun and could handle drought better. but you have to clean old dead grass out before spring ..
Some internet article says that the Zoysia grass requires annual dethatching. However, your lawn is more than 3 years. Did you dethatch? Dethatching is really required?
I think one of my videos shows dispatching. I use a mantis Rototiller with the dethatcher attachment. This covers kind of a small area but can knock out a lot of thatch in a quick period of time without damaging the grass itself. I usually do this before the grass actually comes to life in the spring. I let the brown thatch stay during the winter figuring it probably protects some erosion. Thatch may not be as big a problem in the South as it is in the northern area. Since in my area in Maryland as always grass dies back completely it simply leaves a lot of dead grass. The grass always will find its way through this but over time the thatch gets pretty thick and will create blocking or spots of no growth. By detaching you give the zoysia plenty of room to grow out. Afterwards I cut the zoysia as it comes up shorter than usual to force the zoysia to spread outward. Once it starts getting hotter I don't cut it as close. you can always use a good leaf rake might take you some more time but you'll find he gets up a lot of thatch. I usually run the mower over it and bag up all the thatch. But many people never detaching don't have that much of a problem so it's kind of a tossup depending on your area.
Hi Mark, Great set of videos. Do you have dates that we could refer to when each video was shot? will help with understanding how long it took to get to that point
Riding mower ... Sears..... Seriously I keep it simple . My lawn is four years old now greener than ever . I've tried to make it as maintenance-free as possible .

+k delg April 16 ... still brown... each night has been cold with one night freeze. Right now de thatching, should green up in a week if days can stay 70 during the day for the whole week
I have not seen Scott sell pure seeds always mixed with mulch to cut cost. eBay try SeedRanch Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed. on the web www.outsidepride.com is good. 1lb of pure is $50 and is very small .
I used 8 lbs... but put seed down about 5lbs then over seeded a week later with 3lbs. not sure i need to but ... It came up nice ..but don't let it get baked in sun.. even light sprinkling water helps
Compadre in the back yard and Zenith Zoysia in the front. Compadre is the only one you can buy in seed form. on eBay try SeedRanch Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed. on the web www.outsidepride.com is good.
I'm thinking about putting down Zoysia in my back yard which gets full sun (south facing). Which do you prefer overall, the Compadre or the Zenith? My preference would be for darker color and density if there is any variance between the two types.
My backyard in the video with the pond is the south side.... Gets additional sum because the sun reflects off the pond back onto the embankment. But lately, we have had weeks and weeks of rain. So I haven't been able to mow as often and as you let the grass get a little longer it's noticeable that the Zenith to me anyway is darker than the compadre. But also notice that if I put down some fertilizer with iron it deepens the color. Now the Zenith that I have is in the front yard side doesn't get quite as much heavy sun... I think also the Zenith has a little bit thicker blade so that adds to its look.

Where did you buy the seeds from? Any link? I have hard time finding 98% pure Zoysia seed. Thanks.

Hey Mark, Can you please provide an update? I put down Zoysia last year and had to battle fungus in the fall and again this spring 2018. thanks
use malorganite instead. you wont have any issues even if u spill it. i put a few bags on my lawn and it has exploded!
wonderful share! I'm convinced this is the cultivar to pick for my lawn
I remember when you made the video right after the cold and your grass was brown and your neighbors was lush and green now look...you did good my friend can we get a 2016 spring video...lol
from what you could tell from last season, which cultivar are u preferring?

Why would you not buy Meyer? We've had it at 4 homes in MD from PG Co up north/west to Washington Co and it grows great.
Meyer is by Plugs only. it was developed in 1951 there are many newer varieties out that stay green longer and are more heat resistant.
wow, that's a nice looking grass ! Looks like a zoysia you might see at the sod farm. Hard to believe its started from seed.

hi, will we get a comparison video? now that both have had more establishment time, which has a better turf quality in your opinion?
Posting a new video this week showing comparison...Look for it soon
hi, when can we expect a 2016 green up comparison video?
+Corey Wilder March 18 2016 still brown with a little green at the tip but will snow on March 20th.... So not yet
Your keeping it much too talk. Recommended height is 1-2”. This encourages horizontal growth.

Thank you very much. I have already ordered the seeds online and ready to make a new lawn. Thanks again!
Did you do the sod vs seed comparison video yet?
+David Bandy yes I did thanks Compadre Zenith Zoysia Grass Seed Plus Zenith Sod 2014 Part 5
Hi Mark, Great set of videos. Do you have dates that we could refer to when each video was shot? will help with understanding how long it took to get to that point
good job. so glad to finally hear you actually pronounce zoysia correctly. :)
Hi Mark, are you mowing with a standard rotary mower or a reel mower?

How's that zenith sod looking

Curious as to why you need to dethatch after only 4 years? Can you post a pic of a plug showing the thatch layer?
beautiful lawn brother...2016 video coming soon right
it's been 4 years now any new video?
nothing has changed .... grass is green and thick ... ice cold witer and snow did nothing to stop it in the spring,
Which brand Compadre seeds did you use? Scotts?
I have not seen Scott sell pure seeds always mixed with mulch to cut cost. eBay try SeedRanch Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed. on the web www.outsidepride.com is good. 1lb of pure is $50 and is very small .
Thank you very much for your the information!
How's it look in the winter?
Brown...
Great video series Mark! :-)
I'm about to see compadre Zoysia in my backyward
OK
thanks. keep us posted
how much seed did it take to do the whole back yard?
I used 8 lbs... but put seed down about 5lbs then over seeded a week later with 3lbs. not sure i need to but ... It came up nice ..but don't let it get baked in sun.. even light sprinkling water helps
Mark Burnett what kind and where did you get your zoysia seed?
Compadre in the back yard and Zenith Zoysia in the front. Compadre is the only one you can buy in seed form. on eBay try SeedRanch Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed. on the web www.outsidepride.com is good.
