  • Eric Whitacre:
    "In the spring of 2004 I was lucky enough to have my show Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings presented at the ASCAP Musical Theater Workshop. The workshop is the brainchild of legendary composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell), and his insights about the creative process were profoundly helpful. He became a great mentor and friend to the show and, I am honored to say, to me personally.
    Soon after the workshop I received a call from a major film studio. Stephen had recommended me to them and they wanted to know if I might be interested in writing music for an animated feature. I was incredibly excited, said yes, and took the meeting.
    The creative executives with whom I met explained that the studio heads had always wanted to make an epic adventure, a classic animated film based on Kipling’s The White Seal. I have always loved animation (the early Disney films; Looney Tunes; everything Pixar makes) and I couldn’t believe that I might get a chance to work in that grand tradition on such great material.
    The White Seal is a beautiful story, classic Kipling, dark and rich and not at all condescending to kids. Best of all, Kipling begins his tale with the mother seal singing softly to her young pup. (The opening poem is called The Seal Lullaby).
    I was struck so deeply by those first beautiful words, and a simple, sweet Disney-esque song just came gushing out of me. I wrote it down as quickly as I could, had my wife record it while I accompanied her at the piano, and then dropped it off at the film studio.
    I didn’t hear anything from them for weeks and weeks, and I began to despair. Did they hate it? Was it too melodically complex? Did they even listen to it? Finally, I called them, begging to know the reason that they had rejected my tender little song. “Oh,” said the exec, “we decided to make Kung Fu Panda instead.”
    So I didn’t do anything with it, just sang it to my baby son every night to get him to go to sleep. (Success rate: less than 50%.) And a few years later the Towne Singers graciously commissioned this arrangement of it. I’m grateful to them for giving it a new life. And I’m especially grateful to Stephen Schwartz, to whom the piece is dedicated. His friendship and invaluable tutelage has meant more to me than I could ever tell him."
    Recreated and re-uploaded video because I found a better audio source (FLAC/Lossless) instead of MP3. The audio is also very quiet even at it's loudest so a significant 6 dB boost was added to the volume. I made sure there is no clipping, so there has been no degradation of quality.
    I also was having issues with RUclips miss identifying the artist as Seal, the UK pop singer. I opened a ticket with them and realized that they had already fixed the issue. So to prevent my account from getting a strike I removed the video and re-uploaded it. Sorry to everyone who had this video bookmarked.

    We got to sing this WITH Eric Whitacre conducting us in LA around....3 years ago! He was amazing! Funniest moment was before we started he did a Q&A with the Choir. One of our girls raised her hand like a fangirl and shouted "WHAT CONDITIONER DO YOU USE!?" And, as majestic as a lion, he flipped his glorious mane of hair and replied: I don't use conditioner.....All women in the theater immediately got pregnant.

    I do seal rescue in Orkney, and recently had to put a pup to sleep because they weren't going to make it. Thank you for giving me a song to say goodbye to my 'weary wee flipperling'.
    I sing to the seals, and sometimes they sing back. This song isn't far from the voices of a seal colony singing as the sky and sea changes colour on a calm midsummer night.

      The soprano 1 part (all woman’s choir) is wee weary flipperling, but the soprano 2 part (what I do) is three beats on only weary (so we skip the wee part) and go straight to flipperling curl. Just saying this is how our choir does it I’m guessing there are many possible ways and more musically correct definitions for it.

      @alixjamieson2177 8 лет назад +26

      +Courtney Themm (kittycar98) Don't worry, Dreamworks don't deserve his talent! 😠 I've been pissed off at them lately because they used to make such gorgeous films like Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Spirit and Joseph King of Dreams. But then they made Shrek 3 and everything went downhill. Sure HTTYD was good, but it's got nothing on the books. Kung Fu Panda was good but I never got into the story. And then you have garbage like Shark Tale, Monsters vs Aliens, Home, Over the Hedge, Shrek 4 just ugh!
      Rise of the Guardians is their best in my opinion next to Megamind. But I wish they started making 2D again, because a lot of the time they just rip off Disney and Pixar.
      Pixar or Studio Ghibli would be better people to choose to make this film or any Kipling story.
      However, we do have something close. An Irish animated film called "Song of the Sea." There's a lullaby in this too, in Gaelic that's just beautiful and one of the characters turns into a white seal because she's a selkie and Oh I can't describe how amazing it is!
      As a Scot, the Celtic culture was really nice. Just like Pixar's Brave I felt honoured that they would make stories based on the mythos of Alba and Eire 😊

    • @courtneythemmes2001
      @courtneythemmes2001 8 лет назад +8

      ThatNerdGirl 7 I totally agree with you, Dreamworks has had so many movies that have basically flopped and have since been mostly forgotten about. ill never forget the good ones though like megamind or road to el dorado! they would have made a MAJOR comeback if they made the seal lullaby though! Mr. Eric Whitacre would have saved all of them, but no, Kung Fu Panda had to be made instead :(

    It's 2015, I joined band for the heck of it on my senior year, our high school band played this song. I was in the percussion group so I didn't play, but got to sit and listen. We went to a Ski resort at Colorado for our band trip and they played that song while over their at a concert. I always enjoyed this song, and this song always takes me back to those days. 2015 was like the calm before the storm, it was right before all the political craziness really started taking off. Those were last days before I had to worry about bills, paying for a vehicle, etc. This song always takes me back to Colorado, I always remember the scenario of me sitting outside of the shopping center during the cold night with the snow and yellow Christmas style lights. Those were the days, you always take your younger life moments for granted until you get older. I don't know if anybody is going to read this, but I figure I would at least let it out lol.

    My friend and I saw this at a live concert in the Eastman Theatre, where many songs from many artists were played in many different forms. They played this about two hours in so we were kind of out of it. I was half listening until near the end of the song, where a suspended chord woke me from my daze. I stared at the singers and thought to myself, _Hold on a second. HOLD ON A SECOND. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!_ My friend an I immediately exchanged a glance (at around the 3:37 point) that kind of translated to "You're hearing this too, right?" As it turned out, he experienced the same trance that I did.
    That was really one of the only songs I remember from that concert.

    Just returned from University of North Florida with my daughter and seven other outstanding vocalist from A.W Dreyfoos High School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, FL. Eric Whitaker was the guest clinician who conducted my precious daughter and her friends as they sang this and other selections of his. I lost my mother on June 4 of this year and while listening to the magnificent high school young adults sing I was blubbering like an , I cannot describe it in human words. Such a beautiful piece. So very, very emotional. I love you mom and Mary... Daddy

      Michael. Rough, ain't it...lost my mother two years ago last May and even this afternoon, coming across a lovely card she'd sent me, I just went to pieces. And I think, so often, even though I know she's in a far, far better place than we are now, will this longing ever get any easier. I don't believe so... I've had people tell me, You need to move past your grief, focus on the positive. But I've learned something: this feeling is not the same feeling as the stunning loss of death and the grieving period that follows. This is, rather, the comprehension of how much more you can love and value a person than you'd realised. This is the slow maturation that comes from small but cherished memory after memory randomly coming to you over time. Not the soppy sentiment stemming from an idealised character, either, but the nuanced perspective that comes with age and reflection and the recognition of similar foibles in one's own self. True, lasting and unbreakable love.
      Kindest regards.

    I remember this song, as well as Rudyard Kipling’s poem. Truly a work of art, that shows that children’s poems don’t have to be dumbed down to one-syllable words in order to be appreciated. I sincerely hope children’s writers take this lesson to heart.
    Eric Whitacre’s rendition of this poem has the heartfelt and soothing melody of a father singing to his son. Which makes sense, because he wrote this piece to sing to his son. He took an already masterful children’s poem and enhanced it with his own love for his child. Beyond beautiful, and a wonderful performance from the choir.

    So cool to read some of the comments for this video- so many of us were impacted/changed from getting to sing this song in choir. I will never forget the peace/comfort of getting to sing this, and the kindness/magic of Eric Whitacre as our conductor at the choir camp I attended so many years ago. This song came back into my mind after all these years as I looked at my fur baby, a seal point Persian cat, who I lovingly call my sealy boy.
    After listening to it again, tears just streamed down my face as I felt the love & emotion of this piece. As silly as it may sound, I feel like the seal mom w/ my "weary wee flippering" who is, as I write this, sleeping/hiding under our bed as he adjusts to a new house (lol). Can't wait to play this song for him and lie near him by the bed.
    So interesting too to find out that this was going to be in a movie based on Kipling's The White Seal, but despite that film not going into production, I am so glad Eric shared this song with us all so we could hold the experience and beauty of it too.

He is such a diverse composer and never fails to create a song which I don’t absolutely love singing. This was the first of many Whittacre songs I sang and is up there with my favourite. Some other great Whittacre songs are the songs from his city and the sea collection such as “As is the sea marvellous” and “Little man in a hurry”, Sleep is another great Eric Whittacre song.
