Kev and I took a friend up to the Denniston mine site this morning. What a feat in its inception to do what they did!! Had us in awe at the sights of this incredible eigth wonder of the world!!! Now off to the museum😊
Jim Walker. I was also born in the Denniston Community Hospital in 1952, my dad was Bill Walker - the only butcher on Denniston. My grandfather was the bins manager at the top of the incline in the 1950s so as a small kid, I spent many hours there in his company. We left in the early 1960s. A great video about a fascinating place in the history of coal in New Zealand.
Good one guys! Me and FMZ, rustynz and Rebel98 all went there last week and I was keen to watch this video I knew you had produced. But you had some awesome weather. We on the other hand, had pouring rain, hailstones and it was freezing cold. The cache by the chimney has been replaced since your visit with one from the PWGT series. Always love the drone shots, and especially the old 1967 footage. Thanks for that!
Very glad you liked it. That sounds like quite an adventure. Difficulty 5 geocaching :-) Liked the one by the old chimney hope its still well hidden there. Boy you guys are getting around the country.
That was pretty fascinating to watch! Your use of the old video footage helped me understand better what the Dennsiton Incline was and how it worked. Boy, I bet runaway carts were a scary, scary thing to witness! Times sure have changed! Thanks for the great informational video!
Thanks. Yes the archive footage sure helped. I was amazed and very happy when ArchiveNZ said all their footage is in the public domain. Life was very hard at Denniston. There is an old poem about Denniston written by someone who lived there. ‘Damn Denniston Damn the track Damn the way both there and back Damn the wind and damn the weather God damn Denniston altogether.’
Thanks appreciate you commenting. Really loved visiting Denniston an unusual place with a great view and a nice group of reasonably easy to find caches.
Yes a tough place to live. There is a poem about Denniston written by someone who lived there. ‘Damn Denniston Damn the track Damn the way both there and back Damn the wind and damn the weather God damn Denniston altogether.’
Thanks for an interesting tour. As an 18 year old I visited the South Island while with the British Royal Navy. Docked in Picton. Is that near Denniston?
Its about a 4 hour drive away. Picton is at the top of the South Island on the East Coast. Denniston is on the West Coast. Thanks for commenting glad you liked the tour.
Spent the first 3 years of my life in Denniston. Great video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. We think it's a very special place. It must have been a tough to live and work there.

Really fascinating history! Thanks for doing the research and sharing. Mines really are a relic of times gone by...

Thank you! Fascinating, it's somewhere I've always wanted to explore. You had great weather!
Yes it was near perfect. Nearly no wind for the drone flight. I get very nervous flying the Mavic when its a bit windy.
Awesome, I am just reading the book "Heart of coal" so this adds so much more to the book for me!

Read also The Denniston Rose by Jenny Fitzpatrick.
