They need the evidencial statement if someone from the gang admits its a gang then they can proceed with that as an evidencial statement, for example if your being investigated on a murder and they know its you, you can still get away with it if you plead the 5th and lawyer up but if yoy admit to the murder then they proceed with charges based on that statement
He basically helped speed up the proceedings based on his statement whether or not it was intentional or not
