I'm about to do exactly the same thing to my 2015 Versys 650 and your video/instructions is very helpful and complete, with clear step by step instructions. Thank you.
Gear indicator tip: I found this out the hard way... If your gear indicator has a short cord, it connects in front, as Dave showed. If on the other hand it has a really looong cord, like over six feet, coiled up? Then it may need to connect to an identical plug located BEHIND the tool kit. Why, I don't know, but I bought one with a long cord, and it didn't work with the front connector. I was ready to send it back, but then I noticed an odd photo on the eBay page showing the connector going in back. After trying it out...BINGO, it lit up and worked. This required snaking the cord and socket back through the right side of the bike, which I managed to do after removing the small thigh panel. Great joy and happiness! I cancelled the return. Got my gear indicator for $43 on eBay.
So glad I found video. My 1st motorcycle & needed this video. Thank you so much😀😀. I installed my Gear Position Indicator. Followed your detailed instructions. So proud of myself. Took about 2hrs, probably would have taken less time if I was more tool prepared & that windshield, mmm but pretty easy overall. Riding today 💃💃💃 'Lovelife'
Very helpful, I'll be adding the power outlet this weekend. One thing I discovered is that the OEM power outlet for the vulcan is literally the same as the versys, but only 20 bucks as opposed to $85. If you look at the installation instructions for each one, the actual DC outlet part #s are the same. Such a ripoff haha
+JustinInMotion Really? I wish I would have known that before I bought the Versys Power Outlet. Well, hopefully your tip will save some others the money.
I checked the part numbers and the last four are different. Justininmotion, were you able to successfully install the power outlet? Thanks for your help!
Michael McConahay the actual part number is in the install instructions. There's the part number on the site for the package/item, but each component in the package has its own part number and that's where they are the same. I installed it on mine and everything was a perfect fit
HI, thank you for your video...I got a Quick question: " You show us how to install the Relay as a part of the all thing. Is it for the Gear Indicator or/and for the 12V outlet? If I want to just install the Gear Indicator do I need to buy and Install the Relay? Thank ahead for your answer.
SHORT: => Yes you need the relay. LONG: Hello, I read on french forum (kawette.fr) + on the technical spec that the relay is mandatory for any combinaisons of "gear indicator" / "USB outlet" / "additionnal light" / "additional accessories". Without it you will have no current inside these plugs. CAUTION : specs also mention to not go over 5A and 40W for these accessories lines otherwise battery cannot be charged enough and will be drained. Answering 4 years later "might" be outdated, but for anyone coming now, you have the answer :)
I know this an old video now and I really appreciate the making of it but just wish if anyone is going to take the time to make a vid that they purchase a tripod first it's so annoying watching people fumble about using one hand dropping stuff all over the place.
Dc power oulet PART #: 99994-0485 Relay for power oulet PART #: 99994-0556 Gear indicator PART #: 99994-0467 Note this is for a 2015- 2016 as I believe the 2017 model has the gear indicator
You don't need to remove the windscreen, or the brackets. To do so is a complete waste of time. You don't even need small hands. Never the less, thumbs up...
Thanks for the video. Would you reply with your thoughts on the gear indicator? I have read it wasn't so good at providing the right gear (or slow to update to the correct gear)? Any feedback would be great.
the gear indicator is based in revs and speed so not 100 % accurate. The OEM part is over $200, my friend bough a china made indicator for $50 off of ebay and it does the job and come with the right plug adapter that plugs directly into the OEM part. OEM is very expensive for a part that is not 100% accurate. I would try the China just to see and not a huge investment.
Shouldn't the gear position indicator show a number 1 when in first gear then 2 for second gear, etc? What good is an indicator if it only shows a dash?
2015 ..and Kawi cannot put a gear indicator on the Gauges ? Was really considering this bike ..but the more I research it the more it travels down the list.
Gear indicators are stock on Versys 650 now. Don’t know what year it started, but my 2018 has one in the gauges and there’s not really a need for one of these on mine
I just purchased a 2019 Versys 650, My bike indicates which gear it is in via the LCD panel. Do the earlier models not do this? This would be a redundant Gear indicator for my Versys.
So you pay an outrageous price for a Versys, then you you buy all the parts that should be standard for the price you pay. Kawasaki must be laughing all the way to the bank. The more you entertain them the more they will give you less. Soon an engine will be an extra.

David Ridgeway the only difference is that the Vulcan outlet comes with an extra piece (mounting bracket) that you just don't use
Awesome! Thanks my brother, you just saved me some money
I have a year that has the indicator in the display, but I do like the look of your indicator.
One-handed video drives me crazy! Other than that, it was informative. Thanks.
Very helpful and well constructed video. Very good clear instructions. Install went as planned. A welcome addition to the Versys. Thanks
Such a wealth of information in this video. THANK YOU! Saved me untold hours of time. Also, I like that windscreen. Hope they gave you a free one.
i love how you tag the category on comedy. keep a good work, chap!
Your how to video was excellent. Now if the weather will cooperate I’ll go for long ride .
Thanks for the informative video.
I was wandering where the relay went, and now I know.
Barry
David, Really helpful video! Congratulations and thanks for your time.

Nice job. Was looking to understand relay installation. Perfect..
Very useful, thank you
good video, i have a question, why don´t you conect de gear indicator in to the plug under the sit?
that's a clean bike and garage
Helpful video. Do you think it will be compatible with the older models? I have a 2013 V650.
Very helpful video. Thanks David.
Awesome video 👍👍 is this the same parts and process for the 2018 model you think??🤔🤔
Good video, i am thinking of getting the Grand Tourer version but might get the standard version and just do this now!
Hey, very helpful. Can you provide the parts numbers for the gear position indicator, power outlet and relay in your descriptions please?
there on the Kawasaki web site under accessories for your Versys 2015-2017
Kawasaki damn idiots making extra money. Everything is built in but not provided. Real leach
Can the gear indicator used here be also used for versys 1000.?
the video very helpful...where to get the orginal kawasaki gear indicator and power.
thanks for the video.
what is the price of the gear indicator?
Thank you for doing this!
Thanks for a great video. Do you need the relay box if you are just installing the power outlet? Thanks!
the relay is just for the power oulet, and not for the speed indicator.
Dc power oulet PART #: 99994-0485
Relay for power oulet PART #: 99994-0556
Gear indicator PART #: 99994-0467
Note this is for a 2015- 2016 as I believe the 2017 model has the gear indicator

Do you have a video on how to replace the headlight bulb?
Is it the same way for the 2014 model?
I have a 07 Versys, would it have the wiring for a gear indicator or is that only available on the later models? Thanks
Very informative thank you
Thank you sir

Robert MTL ty for the response!

Very informative video and very painful to watch you working one-handed when there are so many better ways to hold a camera.
thank you for your vid.
does the versys 1000 need a relay kit. im only finding them for the 650
It can be installed in the 2014 model abs?
How many amps does the outlet provide?
why you have to install the relay ????
I just purchased a 2019 Versys 650, My bike indicates which gear it is in via the LCD panel. Do the earlier models not do this? This would be a redundant Gear indicator for my Versys.
Models from 2017 on have a gearshift indicator.
