  • Here are the cues we use while learning Tai Otoshi:
    - step at the top of the triangle
    - look at your watch (sleeve hand pull)
    - thumb comes to shoulder (lapel hand pull)
    - pivot 90 degrees so you're facing the same direction as uke (partner)
    - step across with inside leg
Try your best to keep the line your feet make parallel with your partner's line.

As someone thats actually had to do this to people that were fighting back -- violently throw your hips when you step into position. Dont bend over, as upright posture is key -- but full on cup-check them with your hip.
The leverage will take them off their feet and send their leg momentum backwards so it's even harder to recover from as it will compound the "whipping" of the feet to a comical degree when you twist into the throw. Additionally, a full body hip check to the bladder or balls will do almost as much work for you as the throw when it comes to ending fights.
Practice throwing it with their elbow vs the wrist too, as 90% of the time, you're going to get this when they try to surprise you with a punch so you'll need to stuff it first.

You not only throw someone but also see what time you did it.

A very hard throw to master. The great Yamashita write it was a throw he just could never get down due to the perfection of timing with the hands in conjunction with off- balancing.

Agreed - difficult at first but one of the best throws once you get it down.

No hip in tai otoshi (it's not a wheel around it, it is not the principle behind that throw). You are way too much in line with your uke, he shouldn't be behind you but more on your side and your right foot should be on its toes, not flat. Bad demonstration.

This throw has many variations, fundamentally he's doing everything correctly. Kuzushi, entering with a frame, and executing the throw while blocking uke's foot from stepping forward. Classic tai otoshi.

@@Benjiko no bend of the knee, uke is supposed to trip over leg, not around the hip
