- This video gives a quick overview on how I maintain one of my backyard garden ponds. It sits directly under a Japanese maple and is surrounded by many other deciduous trees.

Thanks again for all the inspiration and solid info you share on your channel. My pond was included in the Austin (TX) Pond Society's annual weekend of pond tours a few days ago and I told a number of visitors and would-be pond owners to have a look at your channel. It was really fun to swap ideas with other pond owners and to receive positive comments after working hard to make it all look its best.
Thanks Laura. That’s very nice of you. I’m sure your pond inspired many people 😊👍
Since I am putting my big container pond in a place that has some oak trees, I know I will have tannin. I love the way blackwater looks, though. Most of the rivers around here are the color of tea.
I think it looks good too 👍
Hello, great video. I was wondering what those shaggy looking shrubs are? Thank you 😊
That’d be acacia cognata ‘Mini cog’
How can you have a pond like that without putting a fence around it.. As far as I was aware if it is deeper than 30 cm it had to be fenced ?
Write to your council. Find out the rules.
Hey Kev, great video as always! Do you have any tips for using activated charcoal to remove tannins? Blackwater isnt a bad look but i also like seeing all the creatures in the water 😊
I've read that the charcoal needs the water supply running through it, but how can that be achieved with a bog in a barrel?
You could put the charcoal in the skimmer or intake bay or under the breather pipe and let water run over it. Remember the charcoal needs to be replaced regularly.
@@Ozponds thanks for the tip! Putting it near the breather tube outflow is a good call 👌
what is that tube coming out of the pipe at 3:42? is that for oxygen or something?
That was just me experimenting with breather pipe placements. I didn’t like that that’s why the tube is all tied up.
Hello! I was just wondering what do you think about clams in ponds?
I don’t mind them. Here we call them freshwater mussles and I have them in 2 of my personal ponds.
@@OzpondsI was doing research about them and there are many positives but I am scared of them breed too much and overpopulating and over time it would have negative effect. I dont really know if they can be a threat for fish or their larvae, also could they be threat for plants? I am going to rebuild my pond with lots of plants, rocks, etc. Also I will have intake bay and bog filter so from curiosity I was thinking about adding them, Pisidium moitessierianum is the spieces, they are native to my country
It’s not a species I know anything about so I’m really not much help. I know mine breed by the larvae attaching to the fish but they don’t cause any damage. Just a part of nature.
Hello ozponds, believe i am losing water due to low edges how can i prevent this from happening next time i build a pond ?
I always run the pond for days, even weeks before finishing off the edges. Even then I leave parts of liner edge exposed so I can easily follow it to check for leaks.
@@Ozponds do I just back fill soil under the liner to keep it vertical instead of horizontal to the soil level?
Yes you want it vertical.

Pine trees are the worst!
Oh they would be!
