Pretty good episode. Interesting to hear the Jericho story from the other side of the fence. A couple of points: 1. Disco Inferno was the person who came up with the "Man of 1004 Holds" list segment. Him and Jericho had a good laugh about it on Jericho's podcast a couple of years back where Jericho acknowledged it was Disco who came up with it. 2. Eric is absolutely right in his points regarding unmasking Juventud Guerrera. Storytelling in places like America and the UK has a different philosophy. Being in front of the camera, you have to have a character to get over, and you absolutely have to sell that character with strong facial expressions/body language, and good timing and presence. Juvi got over doing the "Juice" character, and Rey didn't rise up the card until he lost his mask and started mixing it up with the big dudes like Norton and Nash.
I must have been one of the rare American fans who hate unmasking the luchas. Body language can sell just as good as facial expressions, and the luchas were great at it. It's a joke how him doing that is somehow a negative to some people. Plus it was a measly 30 grand.
2:44:00 Eric's explanation of why there was never a Goldberg/Jericho match is clearly not true. Goldberg had a legit match (one of his best) with DDP at Halloween Havoc right at this time. Goldberg could have a match by this point, he just didn't want to do it. It was a mistake by Eric and Goldberg that they won't own up to.
Jericho working with Goldberg was such a reach though. Jericho had barely survived the TV title division and he was going to work with GOLDBERG next? A good example of why they were smart not going too deep with it is Hulk Hogan and Billy Kidman's feud. You can't just throw someone into a feud with an elite main eventer if they're working Alex Wright and Juventud leading up to it lol.
@@waxoftriple9 A few months later Jericho has one of the greatest debuts of all time in the WWE showing that his popularity was top shelf. A competent wrestling company could have built this match up in a short time period ovver two months using the two best things on Nitro during 1998.

Eric just doesn’t want to admit that at that time he didn’t see enough on Jericho, to give him a push. And the reason he doesn’t admit it, it’s because afterwards Vince Russo made Jericho a star in the WWF!
I still have a bunch of WCW action figures still in box. One of the sets all have the same UPC code, which I found odd. I can see the chance that a retailer would have it listed as Hulk Hogan action figure, when the figures are all probably just assorted.
“Since I took care of Mr. Jannetty so quickly, I came prepared. Malenko, you claim to be the ‘Man of 1000 Holds’ but I counted, and you know about 60. But I know 1004 and I wrote them all down.” -Chris Jericho
Conrad makes Eric's point regarding Jericho being loyal when his contract wasn't signed and still not bolting to russo...if he felt shortchanged he may not have felt that little bit of loyalty
Noticed Bischoff say here no one else wanted to run WCW when he took over and on later episodes he says he had heat from several people that he stepped over to get the position. Tony Shiavone being one
On the topic of "cool heel", Eric in his own book talked down about Triple H and how he's basically a cool heel that doesn't really get over babyfaces with the cool entrance, the cool music, etc.
I agree with Eric the way Chris won’t that belt helped his character be made it seem like it was the best thing in pro wrestling and it was funny and made people like him
Probably not. The people who didn't want it there were in the company before AOL came along, it just took getting Ted out the door which would have happened at some point regardless. Then again, that's just a guess
It's a historically bad company only two years profitable out of 12 by the 2000 they were already losing close to 60million alone. Overpriced contract and creative control.
I remember how much I hated Jericho back in WCW. But then he would just start referring to Rey Mysterio as Ron Mysterio or Tony Schiavone as Tony Skee-uh-vone, and I couldn’t help but laugh my ass off at the time.
@Millennial Smark I don't know. I thought most of his WWF lines were just bleh. Although his, "you just made the list" stuff a few years ago was pretty funny. If we're gonna talk about Michael Cole, we should talk about all the shit the Rock said about him. Lol
Souled Out 97 is very underrated. That PPV had a great look. I loved the nWo ring and the gritty look with the names in lights. Had an Escape From New York feel.
@@nateputerbaugh5709 IN all fairness he's just talking about the look of the PPV. And it did look fucking cool. Just because the in ring action was trash and the dumb Miss NWO contest was on it doesn't change the look.
If he never did cruiserweight vs Benoit in 94 in Japan, if he never did it in WCW, to McMahon he'd be just a guy too small to be of any use. You know it. It was a chance to steal a WCW guy that gave him any chance there.
@@danielrierson6683 Watch him vs Benoit in 94 in Japan. You can just tell, it's all there, the F bombs, the heel persona. It's like Steve Austin, he's that same guy on the mic as he'd be in a bar drunk. IMO anyhow. That's why they came off natural, it was their persona LOL.
I was at the Norfolk Scope attending Nitro and DX was there. While some of it may have been pre-taped, they were there when we were in line waiting to get in. Best guess would have been around 6:30.
Now THIS is an episode where I really wish they could've had Jericho on the horn to confirm or deny and to add to the conversation - the man's own perspective. I feel the episode could've benefited tremendously from that.
2:57:45 You can tell Eric's feelings are hurt (totally understandable!) Yet instead of just drilling Chris for being an asshole, he makes an excellent point about how he never tried to be someone he wasn't. He didn't put on an act for anyone so they would think different of him. Say what you want about Easy E's business practices, but what he said was pretty damn commendable IMO.
I wouldn't necessarily "take Bischoff to task" for relying on the older guys. I would criticise him for dropping the ball on some of the greatest talents in the business at that time. There's always more to the story that fans weren't around to know. So some of the wrestlers who fans felt deserved a top spot might have shot themselves in the foot in other ways. It happened enough times though that it would be impossible to say he never dropped the ball on anyone. For what it's worth every promoter has their flaws. The phrase "dropped the ball" has been mentioned towards Vince McMahon hundreeds of times.

It wasn't that big of a mistake. The thing is if they weren't going to do the match, they should've never started the feud to begin with.
@@waxoftriple9 A few months later Jericho has one of the greatest debuts of all time in the WWE showing that his popularity was top shelf. A competent wrestling company could have built this match up in a short time period ovver two months using the two best things on Nitro during 1998.
@@2HitWonder and according to Jericho's book nobody smartened him up to the way they did business in WWF and he almost got bounced and still did basically nothing with him. Same with the Radicalz and DDP. Wouldn't call them super competent.
bob Byrne Vince always breaks down newcomers. Two years later Jericho was the first undisputed champ. He did fine there.
The original ECW aired on 'SportsChannel' every Tuesday in the early evening, either at 5 PM EST or 6 PM EST. The channel would replay Tuesday's episode a few days later on Thursdays at either 10 PM EST or 11 PM EST.
3:01:30 "No ticky, no laundry!!" 😂😂
Ralphus renegotiating a contract!
As much as Bischoff says "Chris is for Chris", but "Eric is for Eric".
Yup Eric would have said he went into business for himself . Thank God he did though
It is kind of amazing that Jericho shows up on Raw with one of the greatest stars ever on his first day and becomes an all time great over the years
Listening to Bischoff say "bro" is just gold. Eric "Russo" Bischoff.
Any time Eric says that if the guy he's talking about was sitting right here he would say the same thing you know it's about to be a serious burial.
59:03 Spat my drink out ... Bischoff really got me 🤣
Eric just doesn’t want to admit that at that time he didn’t see enough on Jericho, to give him a push.
I was a huge Ultimo Dragon mark. Always have been.
I love the ending with EB promo voice. If you close your eyes you can picture him in the ring with the mic.
Chris has said everytime I heard him tell that story he was going to get squashed by Bill at the next pay per view
I love the album art. Makes Jericho larger than life...
god like
“The man of 1,004 holds”
“Since I took care of Mr. Jannetty so quickly, I came prepared. Malenko, you claim to be the ‘Man of 1000 Holds’ but I counted, and you know about 60. But I know 1004 and I wrote them all down.” -Chris Jericho
One of the greatest promos of all time! So funny
Best angle ever! 😂😂😂😂😂
@@Hotlog69 Arm bar.
@@AP-to4ni It really was and for such a low card too.
Conrad makes Eric's point regarding Jericho being loyal when his contract wasn't signed and still not bolting to russo...if he felt shortchanged he may not have felt that little bit of loyalty
Best 1 so far
Noticed Bischoff say here no one else wanted to run WCW when he took over and on later episodes he says he had heat from several people that he stepped over to get the position. Tony Shiavone being one
Why has there not been 1 jericho episode of something to wrestle with....So far. Bruce must have some good jericho stories.
On the topic of "cool heel", Eric in his own book talked down about Triple H and how he's basically a cool heel that doesn't really get over babyfaces with the cool entrance, the cool music, etc.
The cruiserweight division was must see TV.
Jericho's 1004 holds segment was brilliant!
He threw armbar in there a lot LOL
I agree with Eric the way Chris won’t that belt helped his character be made it seem like it was the best thing in pro wrestling and it was funny and made people like him
Would WCW still be here today if AOL Time Warner hadn’t of sold it or kept it going passed 2001 🤔?
Yes
Probably not. The people who didn't want it there were in the company before AOL came along, it just took getting Ted out the door which would have happened at some point regardless. Then again, that's just a guess
Nope
It's a historically bad company only two years profitable out of 12 by the 2000 they were already losing close to 60million alone. Overpriced contract and creative control.
Wcw had top names in 96-97but they were old and went soft on story’s wwe were totally different so no
I remember how much I hated Jericho back in WCW. But then he would just start referring to Rey Mysterio as Ron Mysterio or Tony Schiavone as Tony Skee-uh-vone, and I couldn’t help but laugh my ass off at the time.
Skee-uh-vone and Paa-je were the best ones!
@Millennial Smark I don't know. I thought most of his WWF lines were just bleh. Although his, "you just made the list" stuff a few years ago was pretty funny. If we're gonna talk about Michael Cole, we should talk about all the shit the Rock said about him. Lol
Stinko Malenko
lol Jericho was never funny
"Jojo Dillon"
Getting dressed down by the Red Rooster.I would said”Hey Orndorff, this sequenced jacket up in New York”
This is awesome! But now I want this Hogan Contract debate! Is it in the Hogan saved WCW episode in the 200’s or did they just skip that one? 2:18:20
He was fun to watch and he know how to get the crowd worked up.
Souled Out 97 is very underrated. That PPV had a great look. I loved the nWo ring and the gritty look with the names in lights. Had an Escape From New York feel.
Noel ComiX This is a joke right. Souled Out is December to Dismember awful
Nate Puterbaugh no joke 1000% serious.
Nate Puterbaugh I really miss that nWo ring. It was uses in WCW vs nWo world tour
@@nateputerbaugh5709 IN all fairness he's just talking about the look of the PPV. And it did look fucking cool. Just because the in ring action was trash and the dumb Miss NWO contest was on it doesn't change the look.
Souled out 97 sure it looked good but the show itself sucked
"Christ" Jericho? How did nobody catch that?
Well, he is the self-proclaimed "Iyatollah of Rock and Rollah", so Christ Jericho kinda fits somehow lol. Hilarious typo though.....
I did, but before I commented I scrolled down to see if anyone else did....I mean Jericho was pretty awesome, but not that damn awesome
They have typos all the time. Someone is drunk at the helm.
The Demo Son of God!
Love everything remains raw playing at the beginning
I didn't realize Jericho hated his time in WCW so much!
But I thought he did good. He made developed his character for the rest of his career
Love this podcast, cant wait for them to talk about Dusty next week :)
I was at the Norfolk Scope attending Nitro and DX was there. While some of it may have been pre-taped, they were there when we were in line waiting to get in. Best guess would have been around 6:30.
Come On Baby!!!
You know I gotcha......
Eric just made the list.
Now THIS is an episode where I really wish they could've had Jericho on the horn to confirm or deny and to add to the conversation - the man's own perspective. I feel the episode could've benefited tremendously from that.
Chris Jericho actually benefitted from this. He went on to his podcast to rebuttal some of the stuff here or just talk about his side of the story.
Why didn't they have Bischoff chime in on Jericho's book? Lol. Weird.
It's 100% right that cool heels make babyfaces look terrible.
The ego on Eric Bischoff knows no bounds.
He is still playing a character. Workers never stop working.
Stfu
I hope you guys can do an episode on the Great Muta
Good show fellas!
Wcw heavyweight mainevent was stacked in 1998. It was hard to push Jericho during this time
Jericho 1st theme was the only reason I put up with the ad 😂
I wouldn't necessarily "take Bischoff to task" for relying on the older guys. I would criticise him for dropping the ball on some of the greatest talents in the business at that time. There's always more to the story that fans weren't around to know. So some of the wrestlers who fans felt deserved a top spot might have shot themselves in the foot in other ways. It happened enough times though that it would be impossible to say he never dropped the ball on anyone.
For what it's worth every promoter has their flaws. The phrase "dropped the ball" has been mentioned towards Vince McMahon hundreeds of times.
Prince Iaukea was a legend lmfao woooooo!!!!!! Preliminary magic Bro hahaha 🤴
Pretty disappointed that Chris decided to bury Eric for no reason other than to sell his book
