How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RUclips channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

If you stay calm when working them, they stay calm and work alot easier
Eventually they do get riled up as they get towards the last few because they panic due to feeling singled out but it’s important to keep them calm as long as possible for sure!

If you can't work them alone with an Arrowquip, then you have bigger problems. Best one I have ever run, and you made a great decision getting one! Great video!
Silencer chute would even be faster and easier
Hi, I’m just having a cup of coffee and said I would watch something as I drink ,guess what I did today, you got it vaccinated calves against ibr and gave them an oral drench for fluke and worms and spot on for lice. I did 165 on my own in a couple of hours in an very ordinary crush nothing nearly as fancy as that Q catch system you have although I will concede that my yard is a bit more elaborate and I do have automatic syringes for vaccines. We have a good few more cattle to handle than you guys and we couldn’t possibly justify the expense of the Q catch but we have a chute that holds 12 or 14 calves at a time and you just walk up along it and dose them all then jab them and finally a squirt of pour on for the passengers and based on the time it took you to get the job done maybe our old fashioned system is not that bad after all. Well done with the videos I enjoy seeing how other guys farm, regards from Ireland.
That’s impressive! I agree, the biggest struggle I have now is getting them to go into the chute, but with a little time and investment hopefully I can get a permanent setup going to make it even more efficient! I also intend to upgrade syringes, but at $60 a syringe I figured I could get by with what I’ve got 😂
@@HowFarmsWork 60 dollars for a 5 cc auto syringe! Wow you mericans must’ve really pissed off the Chinese! I bought 2 before Christmas here on our little INOFFENSIVE island for €54 for the pair ( had to look that up just to be sure) gave €60 for two syringes and a box of 100 needles. I don’t know what a Qcatch costs over there but something similar over here is €8000 for the bog basic model and up to about €20,000 for one that you would like to have,if you want all the bells and whistles you are talking €30 k.

i cant tell exactly what you have going on in your set up but it looks like you could easily put a budbox at the end of that alley and you'd be set! We just switched our semi load out to a bud box and really like it. We load a couple thousand head a year. Building a bud box is cheaper than buying any tub and alley combo.
Now all you need is a two section alley and some panels !! 6 hours 😳😳 30 head. 😢. Thanks sir great chute!

Happy New Year. Great to see the chute working out so well. Certainly seems to be a good system. I’ve seen others mention the benefit of having one or more sections in line since they tend to try to follow each other. Not sure if it would be worth the effort in your situation. Wishing you and your family the best.
Not everyone can have the best system, but a good chute is imperitive. And he has 1 of the best.
What are the doses for. Fluke? Worms? Do yee drench cattle over there at all?
He looks like he is using a pour on Ivermectin paraticide. Flukes, stomach worms, and external parasites.
Wish I had photos of some of my Dad's dairy cattle back when I was a kid. Always was interesting to see how the frozen bull juice genetics worked. 😂

Those head chutes are nice aren't they we got the exact same one but we got the extended run and swing tub
I intend to get some of those as well to help get them through easier!
You could build a bud box and alley out of railroad ties and planks that would work much better than the arrow tub and alley. We used a arrow tub and alley to preg a couple hundred cows this year and wasn't impressed.
I'm glad I didn't have to go thru that for my flu shot......

Yep. It’s got jacks on each side to lift it so you can slide the wheels on

I’m thinking about getting the one with pinkeye made for meat. We’re getting a freezer soon and I’m hoping I can fill it with some of our own stuff!

If you can't work 30 head of cattle by yourself with those facilities, you need to get out of the cattle business. Also 6 hours to work 30 head is extremely slow. An investment in a multi-dose syringe(s) would help immensely. God Bless and Happy New Year!

Can you vaccinate through the food source?
I don’t believe so. My reasoning for thinking not would be that the modified or killed virus would be destroyed in the gut.
@@HowFarmsWork interesting. Maybe one day that will be an option. I'd also worry that all animals might not get enough of a dose if it was through food.

Do we really know whats in those shots? This is why the 5 acre parcel zoned ag down the road from me (S.C. Wi) just sold for $54K/acre. The new thing is micro herd beef raising. Lots of ppl want beef, but w/no "shots". If they die, they die...at least "we" dont. Just wondering if you know for a fact..that those have zeeeero mRNA in them. I personally don't know, but kinda all done "trusting" that kind of market.

The vaccines are pretty old school, MLV or Killed Virus products that have been in use since the 90's. The Clostridial products were around before the 1970's, and the MLV weren't far behind. Great observation, and anytime you can vax cattle against a potential problem beats using antibiotics. Yes, the latter are important, but a vax is better.
Dead livestock is not something anyone should accept without making the best effort to prevent. Yes, it happens, but as caretakers of animals we are obligated to do whatever we can to prevent it.
