    What do you think about this cost - reasonable or no? What would a plumber charge in your area to do this work? Curious to hear from others who have put in or are planning to put in a radiant heat.

    I think you guys made very good choices about design and material, and of course, install. You are getting a good deal for many years, especially considering you know how to service what you've built.

    If you're looking to track electricity usage without putting meters on everything, Sense has a pretty cool system that is just loops around the incoming/outgoing wires in the electric panel that recognizes "signatures" on appliances/anything plugged in. You can name them/isolate them initially, then it tracks it in an App moving forward.
    We picked up the Basic $50 version, but it looks like there's other options available. We installed ours 5ish years ago, it's helped us narrow down energy usage and to know where our biggest energy draws are.

      That's very reasonably priced, I'll look into that! I definitely like the idea of seeing how much power each circuit consumes

    I've started watching all of the progress. Your videos are awesome! Thank you for sharing your journey of building the dream home. So far the home looks beautiful. How much square feet is the home? Can you make a video of a mini tour around the home as well?

      Thank you! This is just phase 1, the garage apartment. It is designed for a future addition of the main house. 1,170 sqft of living space, 1,340 sqft of garage/utility space. We will do a full tour video once it's all done!

    Ive helped put some radiant heating in, once in a house and the other in a new garage being built. So many zip ties but it was fun and a good learning experience

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  2 месяца назад +1

      Awesome! The zip ties are a bit tedious. It's a better option from the heat transfer perspective than putting the tubing at the bottom of the slab though, I talked in more detail about why in the tubing install video

    I have the Emporia energy monitor v2 and it's a reasonable electrical monitoring device. They just went to v3 which seems easier to install. It'll ruin the look of your panel and bother your OCD for a while, but it works.

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  2 месяца назад

      Haha I briefly looked into it and saw that it's just a mess of amp clamps around each wire running back to a transmitter. SquareD has something similar too, I believe called Wiser Energy. Definitely a project for the future

    • @davidstewart1153
      @davidstewart1153 2 месяца назад

      @@MasonDixonAcres The Emporia system can be made a little neater by using a small subpanel enclosure to hold their monitor hub. The main panel still gets 18 clamp sensors and wires, but they can all go out to the subpanel and be a disaster over there. Emporia only monitors up to 16 circuits and that's an annoying limit too.

    Probably a dumb question but does this go into the foundation pour or is this a new slab poured on top of the foundation? 🥴

    Your consumption seems high for only keeping it above freezing. I have a 3456 sqft build (1728 sqft of concrete with 6 identical length loops) and keep it at 62 for around $40-60 a month. I do have a lot more thermal mass 6" to 12" of concrete and placed my loops on the foam, which I know John says not to do, but being a principal piping engineer, I disagreed with his approach for my application and needs. I prefer the longer runtime/swings as it keeps my boiler from short cycling which can reduce efficiency. Anyways, good to see another couple self building who are also engineers.. I too have so many details that I created for my home and I am a advocate for value engineering. Do you have an idea of what your cost per sqft will be on this build?

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for that data point! All the heat was blowing up through the ridge vent and soffits during construction so next winter will be a more realistic figure. Will probably do a full cost video once everything is done

    • @FJB2020
      @FJB2020 2 месяца назад

      @MasonDixonAcres Oh yeah, that makes more sense since I am monopoly framed, and you are vented. Our goal is to build this for around $50 a sqft, and so far, we are tracking very well towards that.

    You must have rented the propane tank? I'm just below you in Maryland and can get propane for $1.69 / gallon if you own the tank. If you rent the tank you are captive to one supplier that owns the tank and they will charge you more than $1.00 (say $2.85 / gallon) more for a gallon or propane.

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  2 месяца назад

      That's extremely cheap, I'd love to know who you're getting it from especially if that is a delivered price. The local company we use doesn't charge directly to use their tank, I got quotes from several other companies in the area that all had a monthly rental fee on top of $3/gal propane, and some had a delivery fee on top of that. We might upgrade to an underground tank in the future so I didn't want to buy the tank

    • @FJB2020
      @FJB2020 2 месяца назад

      What size tank do you have? Usually you get bulk rates when you have a 500 gallon tank and own it, but still, $1.69 is almost $2 below Maryland's average, so something seems off..
