After Graduating from High School in 1993 I was lost. Being unmistakably gay in South Texas was a nightmare my entire life, but Bjork made me feel like I was just living in the wrong time and plane of existence. When I saw the cover of the Homogenic album I knew it was going to be epic. The veritable sound explosions and sensual rhythm pulled me into a dream world. She was feeling what I was feeling. She loved how I loved and was unapologetically giving everyone the finger of vulnerability. I am now 47 years old and cannot go a day without listening to something by Bjork. If I want to immerse myself in the entire story I sit back and play her music videos. They are just as powerful as her music. All in all Bjork is a gift to us all. She goes beyond storytelling by creating her own instruments and even stripping them away to make way for the harmonic diatribe of choral voices in the background. I'm so lucky to have discovered her early in life in the Sugar Cubes and hung around for her sonic journey as we both aged with love and loss. Thank you for your reaction videos on Bjork. Your commentary and discovery brought me much joy.
Homogenic is literally the most consistent masterclass of an album I’ve ever heard. Every song is incredible, and complements the other songs. Like All Is Full Of Love wouldn’t be as peaceful as it is, without Pluto placing it into context, and Pluto wouldn’t be as fun as it is without Alarm Call bringing in the dance beat. Every song has unique elements that make it stand out, but all of them still sound like they’re from the same area. THIS is how you make a consistent album.
Def listen to Post and Vespertine! Biophilia is a bit weaker, but it’s sonic palette is basically unrivaled from the rest of her albums. Björk literally made new instruments like the “singing Tesla coil” that plays on Thunderbolt.
@@Benheartsart She didn't make them, or even invent them. She's a musician lmao She either took an existing idea that wasn't in use or asked for a way to pull off a concept but she likely comissioned all the 'new' instruments she used
Oh! Just my opinion: I feel like starting with Björk’s earliest work then progressing chronologically is the way to go. It’s just so exciting to hear how she developed as an artist. Vespertine is tied with Homogenic for my favorite, though. I can’t wait for you to hear it. So ethereal and delicate, but POWERFUL.
At the time Homogenic came out, Barnes and Noble had listening stations, and this was one of their featured albums. Bachelorette was the first song it played and it completely blew my mind. I'm pretty sure I had my parents buy me the CD that day. I was pre-internet pre-teen with typical pop and rock music leanings, and Homogenic was one of the most transformative moments in my musical tastes.
I remember those! When “Dancer in the Dark” came out they featured her album “Selmasongs” and that was really the first time I ever listened to her. A bit later I bought “Vespertine” on a whim and she’s been my fave ever since!
"I'm no fucking Buddhist, but this is enlightenment" is one of my favourite lyrics ever. I still remember where I was when I heard that track for the first time (on a train in North Devon). This album is magical
I remember hearing on TV in 1998, that this album is supposed to induce an altered state of mind. I bought it on a casette tape:), I was 14. I didnt know anything about music production, or electronic music, I didnt speak english, but this album took me to places....noone around me understood... it was just 14 year old me, walkman and this alien, weird music.....for months and months I kept listening, and I kept getting it more and more.... I kept discovering...the album, myself and world around me. And I am still listening.....because with this music I can be just me. Forever.
i saw björk live 3 weeks ago. She did hunter, joga, bachelorette and pluto from this album. Grew a new love for those songs. She was doing them orchestreal so pluto sounded very different. it was really fun tho cuz she made the crowd scream with her during pluto
Vespertine next and then vulnicura, Vespertine is the genesis of a relationship and vulnicura is the breakdown of that same relationship. Deffo do them in that order :)

I think it is best to listen to her albums chronologically. Her albums are a diary of her life, like watching a cell divide and expand till it is fully realized. The album she makes at the end of her life is likely to be unlike anything else she has ever made or maybe she will come back to the beginning and in a way complete the cycle like a rebirth.
This was so lovely to see your brand-new interpretation, and so colorfully described. HOMOGENIC is my all-time favorite Bjork album and to re-experience it through your fresh ears was so refreshing!
This Album could be released today and be extremely successful, that's how far ahead of its time it is. I may have mentioned this in an earlier video , Bjork is One of the few artists who's Discography is Best Absorbed & Appreciated when listening in Chronological Order. Her Artistic Evolution is Truly Magical a thing of Wonderment. - Debut - Post - Homogenic✅ - Vespertine - Medulla - Volta - Biophilia - Vulnicura - Utopia
Selma Songs should be included in it between Homogenic and Vespertine. Technically also Telegram and Drawing Restraint 9, which both shows the evolution to Homogenic and Volta like Selma Songs did to Vespertine. Drawing Restraint isn't good, but it has its place
@@daipearmain Telegram and DR9 are a bit of a challenge, they're completely focused on extremely experimental or underground production, rather than just songwriting. Selmasongs is a soundtrack but is still cool.
Yes!!! Finally! My favorite album of all time! I’m so glad you understood the scale, majesty, and beauty of it! From Homogenic onwards, her work really becomes cohesive statements that should be listened to from start to finish.. rather than just a song here or there. I would highly recommend Vespertine next! It is probably my next favorite album of all time and has some of the most breathtakingly beautiful songs you will ever here!
I love your thoughtful takes on Bjork. I've been a fan for 36 years and have rarely had conversations about her music. Being a 50 year old male in the US south there aren't a lot of fans in my peer group lol. There's very little traditional structure so it takes a willingness to give in to the soundscapes she creates. On Bachelorette, It's funny you kept mentioning theater vibes because that's exactly how the video is designed. I never know how to introduce Bjork to people so I usually don't. It's a very personal and intimate type of music and you either get it or you don't. I went alone to see her at Red Rocks in 2003 and it was everything.
The explanation that you gave to her lyrics after “5 Years” was SO accurate and I’ve never heard someone explaining björk’s music like that before. Ugh you always have the best things to say!
You absolutely have to do Vespertine, which is a sequel to this album. All is full of love was supposed to belong to the next album. Each subsequent album is even more specific. As Homogenic focused on beats and strings, Vespertine is microbeats and intimacy. Medulla is made only of human voices, and Volta has Japanese and Asian influences. Biophilia is a complete concept album for iPad with an app for each song where you can influence the melodies yourself. Overall, Bjork's songs work much better for the album as a whole.
Thanks Luscent, I kind of felt the same perception of the album without realizing it, without words. As a Björk fan you showed me how to understand and love this album even more.🙂 You are amazing interpreting and explaining art. Warmth.
Björk falls in love with certain sounds then presents them in their most interesting profiles in each album. I love to hear how she manipulates sound textures. I’m beyond excited for FOSSORA. I’m so happy that you listened to Homogenic. I appreciate that you really think about the juxtaposition between the lyrics and soundscapes.
It's amazing how some can reason out different meanings from art than what was originally intended. Not to take value away from your interesting interpretation, but if I recall correctly from an old Bjork interview, the title "Homogenic," was in reference to the homogeneity of the sound of the album, in contrast to that of her previous album, Post, where the sonic landscape feels schizophrenic, due to the sonically diverse, albeit still wonderful, collection of album tracks.
yeah it's a crime so many of the weird old b-sides and guest spots will never be given the spotlight - Charlene, Visur Vatnsenda-Rosu, Lilith, pretty much everything from Vespertine's singles... it's obviously better these days, music is so much more accessible, but damn I miss buying a single and finding it had 20+ minutes of new stuff to obsess over lol
I started really listening to Bjork this year, I only knew a few of her songs before, and I'm so thankful I did, her music is so special. I'm getting to know her albums chronologically, I think it's the best way to appreciate her evolution, now I'm with Biophilia, which I feel is being more difficult to assimilate than the previous ones but I need to give it time. Anyway I hope you react to Post and Verpertine, they are my favorites along with Homogenic.
If interested, search for footage of how Björk created this album. It's wild to see the gear she access to back then; absolute sound pioneer! Also, next month this album turns 25.
Bjork is hunting for harmonies and tunes. This song came to her when she used to take walks in her new neighborhood in Spain hunting for tunes. She had to move after the infamous stalker situation in iceland.
THE TRANSITION FROM 5 Years to Immature is so good! I remember where I was when I was listening to 5 years around 2011, and it wasn’t until like YEARS later til I realized Immature was also a great song.
Wonderful reaction! You HAVE to do Vespertine next. It's my favorite Bjork album and one of the best albums ever imo. So beautiful and sensual and spiritual.
yeah the lyricism in all neon like is very intense, it definitely is sexual, but it is in the theme of "being a warrior of love", wanting to encapsulate someone in your own, just so they can feel your light. she's also talking very baby-like, as if shes telling a bed-time story.
As another commenter mentioned - do Vespertine and then Vulnicura after it. Vespertine - about their meeting and falling in love. Vulnicura - their break up. Complete opposites
Yoga is a love song - as it were, to her masseuse. Helping her recover after taxing gigs. Because she goes all out on stage. You should check out her Voltaic performance at Paris. It should be available on youtube.
i love your quick smart thinking on the lyrics. you very comfortably dive into the story behind the sounds und connect everything in a beautiful way. thank you
I really enjoyed watching your reactions to an album I have enjoyed for many years. It takes me back to when I first moved to London. This album was part of the soundtrack to my life at that time - although I still listen to it regularly! I was about your age and living on the Sunshine Coast in Australia when Debut first came out and have loved Bjork ever since - following her through all her strange twists and turns. The remixes of Human Behaviour are a fav of mine too. I like how you came at the songs fresh and open without reading interpretations from others or from Bjork herself. It’s really refreshing to just hear your take of the lyrics, sounds, beats and textures in the music. It was great to see your appreciation and openness to this powerful album…
Please react to all of them😅 You've got such a lovely personality. And you seem quite knowledgeable when it comes to music🙈 oh, and it has to be Vespertine next.
Fun fact about the album cover. Alexander McQueen was the designer that came up with the cover look. At the time, and still today, he’s one of the most individualistic designers to come into the scene. He truly is unique in every way that he designs. Her using him as the designer makes the concept even more meaningful. Also, he was super inspired by the icy, yet vibrant, environment that the album created and was able to capture the music in a beyond perfect way. In addition, this album is the beginning of concept albums, so each album henceforth is summed up by the album name, and fleshed out in a beautiful order to further paint the picture of the album title.
Im all hyped up on her new single which randomly brought me here, and it turns out im pleasantly surprised by your insightfulness! Subbed! I look forward to checking out more of your vids!
If you plan on doing a reaction to Vespertine next, I recommend listening to the live version called "Live at Royal Opera House" A lot of the live renditions are songs that I think surpass the clean studio recordings. If you can pick up the DVD from OLI Records (its just £7) the surround sound mix is knock-your-socks-off phenomenal!
I remember first getting hearing All Is Full of Love somewhere on tv but I think only clips of the music video. Then I discovered Hunter via LimeWire after getting into Volta, not sure how much I heard throughout high school. Then I specifically remember I was waiting in the airport going from home back to college, waiting to check my luggage- and I heard 5 years. and I just loved it. Idk if that was the first time listening or what but that’s a pretty clear memory. Then I also remember getting into Pluto around that time at my home kitchen around the pencil sharpener and it was really clicking that climax at the end. Then idk how many years later I was at a baseball game with my family and I listened to Immature and it FINALLLY clicked with me. It’s got layers and a groove I never really realized. this album is one of my favs!!! 5 years is the best!!! but like all the songs are so great. Pluto and Hunter and Bachelorette I love the most I think… apart from 5 years and Immature.
My god ^^ I watch a lot of video album reaction. And finally , someone Dona reaction album video with : GOOD HEADPHONE ^^ i am french I love bjork . Your reaction video is perfect . Happy you love the album. And whouaaaaaaa I love YOUR voice ^^ English ????
Your reaction is really cool for me. I fell in love with it as a virgin before I’d been close to anyone. So all my first impressions were more focused on the travel/ pushing boundaries part of the lyrics. I totally see your POV about the contrast of Bjork and a former partner, I just never thought of it from my experience when this album defined my moment.
In Jóga, I think I read that she had been listening to a lot of Jón Leifs who was a composer who pioneered the Icelandic voice when Iceland hadn’t really established a national sound yet. Traditional Icelandic music often is based on open fifths and fourths which end up sounding very medieval.
Well after seeing you listen to each song it made me realize the story of this album. Hunter is her searching for love. Joga about being in love and the tension of it. Then next song about a breakup or absence of that love. The Bachlorette about the single woman life and just jumping from person to person. Then realization in Immature shows how she noticed her naive views of love. Then an explosion of her new self.
Vespertine HAS TO BE NEXT!! Bjork took everything she explored on Homogenic and Perfected it on Vespertine! But not only that, she created one of the best albums ever period. Imo, her Masterwork 🙂❤️
The interesting thing about the lyrics in the last track is that the phrase forces you to say 'love' twice. All Is Full Of Love/All is full love love, like you are getting a double dose of love surrounding you whether you know it or not. She did say, herself, that this album is of a woman character who she deemed a feminine yet ferocious warrior of love that is finally triumphant in her crusade.
I read many years ago that her full use of vocal range was developed very young from when she would take walks and explore outside in the Iceland landscape. She liked to sing but sometimes the wind would blow so hard she had to scream to hear herself.
I fell in love with Bjork as a teen in the 90s. Been following her since, and was incredibly lucky to see her live in Toronto for the Vespertine tour in 2001. Best concert ever! While watching your reaction to Homogenic, I recalled watching a documentary about the making of the album. I did a search, and voila, I found it on RUclips. I highly recommend watching it! ruclips.net/video/xTF0u4gxfqo/видео.htmlsi=zY4DfHy63qVYlGlI
Neon, I found to be more along the lines of a person getting gussied up for a night on the prowl; eventually hooking up, but ultimately recognizing the trappings of pretense/falsehood. Really enjoying your insights.
Maybe someone has already written this but there is a making of "Homogenic" in which she explains how it was important for her to only use 1. drums 2. strings 3. vocals. So, yes, the strings are indeed very important here :-) but I would say they are also very present on her other albums.
Vespertine please!! It's Oh So Quiet kinda killed my interest in Björk so I never checked her out until a then friend of mine made me a mix CD for me and included 5 Years on it. I was in the very early stages of my music discovery journey. I didn't realize she could sound like that and truthfully the sound was pretty alien to me at first. I decided to check out Homogenic and other albums by her and fell in love (for the most part). Her vocals towards the end of Pluto are NOT for me. I feel like cringing 😩 I just can't handle it lol. I also prefer Howie's version of All Is Full of Love. Overall it's a great album and I'm glad you ended up getting it.
I don't know what was in the water in Iceland but the year before Homogenic came out, an Icelandic band called GusGus (at the time, apparently a collective of 9 people) put out a record called Polydistortion, which really played with messy glitched pop sounds in a similar way (Mark Bell even remixed them, so it was clear they were all aware of each other at the time). I loved the vibes and the explicit 90s gayness but they were rather terrible with lyrics though lol

Yoga is a love song - as it were, to her masseuse. Helping her recover after taxing gigs. Because she goes all out on stage. You should check out her Voltaic performance at Paris. It should be available on youtube.
i love your quick smart thinking on the lyrics. you very comfortably dive into the story behind the sounds und connect everything in a beautiful way. thank you
I recommend watching the 2000 movie/musical "Dancer in the Dark" staring Bjork! One of my favorite movies very emotional!
OmG I forgot!! That's How I actually discovered Alexander McQueen!!!
Inspired by the robot geishas in ghost in the shell
He also directed the music video for 'Alarm Call' :)
Post is also a concept album… she wanted it to be very promiscuous
Jóga is actually a love song and she herself has described it the ‘fiercest love song I’ve ever written’
You made an incredible reaction video - thank you x this is my number one albums of all time..
Im all hyped up on her new single which randomly brought me here, and it turns out im pleasantly surprised by your insightfulness!
Subbed! I look forward to checking out more of your vids!
Do vespertine then vulnicura as they sort of follow each other up in story
@luscent - YESSSS to this - Vespertine about meeting him. Vulnicura - their break up.
You are listening to the best electronic album of all time!
This is in my Top 5 albums of all time! So happy you got to it! Love from Brazil ❤️
She's amazing. My favorite Bjork album. ♥️
vespertine would be a great follow up album to check out
My god ^^
I watch a lot of video album reaction.
And finally , someone Dona reaction album video with : GOOD HEADPHONE ^^
i am french I love bjork .
Your reaction video is perfect . Happy you love the album.
And whouaaaaaaa I love YOUR voice ^^ English ????
I would love to watch you do this with all her albums!
You should do Vespertine! you're gonna love it too.
Yeah, you tick so many boxes, impressive❤️I always thought that the Neon Lights were a metafore for love☺️
Vespertine HAS TO BE NEXT!! Bjork took everything she explored on Homogenic and Perfected it on Vespertine! But not only that, she created one of the best albums ever period. Imo, her Masterwork 🙂❤️
The music video for All is Full of Love (the one with the robots) is stunning, you should have a look.
You should also check out the music videos for this album. All Is Full of Love and Bachelorette in particular are just amazing.
Unravel is my fave from this album. I spent many nights listening to that.
Sincerely Bjork isthe one of the few 3 artist that really dont need any somebody reaction we all react
Are you going to react to all of björks albums?
"She makes you... try to understand the riddle"
This made me laugh. If you know you know.

Neon, I found to be more along the lines of a person getting gussied up for a night on the prowl; eventually hooking up, but ultimately recognizing the trappings of pretense/falsehood.
Really enjoying your insights.
Homogenic is still my most fav album since 1997
Celine Dion: I’m alive
Bjork: I’m a fountain of blood 🩸 in the shape of a girl
This young generation start to discover Bjork 👍🏼
I think Bachelorette is a tango so the accordion is a reference to that.
Omg Born This Way in the background hellooooo
From all of the people out there reacting to Bjork, to me you are the one who actually gets it.
“Pluto” takes to to the edge of well…Pluto. The edge of the solar system.
My favorite Bjork album is Post but I think you would love Vespertine.
Actually it's
"Hone" what's been found
Please react to her "Medulla" album
Joga is about her best friend
38:54 This is the one you could literally say less.
this album is a beautiful fractal.... FOSSORA next *fingers crossed*
All Neon Like has a non-digital instrument, not all synths: a wine glass xylophone (not sure what it's called, i think played by guy sigsworth!
VESPERTINE ! Next please a masterpiece also , UNISON is in it , to me it’s her best song ( hopefully you listen to it and agree with it )
I don't know what was in the water in Iceland but the year before Homogenic came out, an Icelandic band called GusGus (at the time, apparently a collective of 9 people) put out a record called Polydistortion, which really played with messy glitched pop sounds in a similar way (Mark Bell even remixed them, so it was clear they were all aware of each other at the time). I loved the vibes and the explicit 90s gayness but they were rather terrible with lyrics though lol
