I live in Dubai and can personally attest to the fact that M5 is one of the biggest designers here, not to mention very sought after. His couture house is in Dubai Design District. That in itself says a lot about him and his brand, after all, you gotta be “something” to be there in that area. Apart from that, his clientele in the Gulf is massive, he’s made dresses and wedding gowns for Sheikhas across GCC and he’s also always highlighted every Arab Fashion Week, (sometimes even more than Arab designers). Big loss for Team Canada. Doesn’t hurt to be grateful. The bridge they’ve burnt ain’t lighting up the way moving forward too. 🤦🏻♀️

If there are 50 candidates he would draw 50 different gowns and shows them with his classmastes. It’s his childhood dream. It’s a manifestation of his dreams. This is sad. Not only Filipino designers are gonna deny service to Miss Canada Universe, but as well as designers from other countries. If I was a designer, I will not help them even if they pay me, knowing how ungrateful they can be.

I don’t know M5 personally but I’ve met him once and we have common friends. He seem sweet, demure and soft spoken. Anyway, if you get free gowns- wear it, don’t wear it but don’t bad mouth the sponsor/designer. Period. Earlier today Nova went live on IG, and Mgmode commented something to the effect downplaying the drama and playing victim. I said “You and your big mouth are to blame.” They blocked me. Lol Nova didnt really apologize or cleared things up. To me it sounded like she probably want to blame the mgmode boys for talking too much but she couldn’t. She’s caught in the middle for sure. Anyway, I read M5 reached out to the guys of mgmode to talk to him but he felt ignored that’s why he decided to speak out. In the end, not a loss for M5. Definitely loss for MUC, free (gown) sponsorship is free and that a big help as we all know competing for MU is very expensive.

I’ll also add that after working as the coach for Miss Philippines USA, that Filipinos are some of the most gracious people I’ve ever met. Every time I went to rehearsals the contestants thanked me, and their parents would also thank me as well as offer to feed me. 😭❤️ always a pleasure.

Michael Cinco is my former classmate back in College at early 90s in Manila taking up Bachelor of Fine arts and after that he went to Paris and London to study Arts and Design.. I never thought that one day he become very famous.. Most of his cleint are Hollywood stars, rich and famous personality, THANK YOU DANI and ALOHA from MAUI HAWAII ..
And India gave Adline only one decent gown which she wore in both prelims and finals. And still she made it to the top 5. This just goes to show that gowns don’t matter, what matters is the way a girl carries herself. Adline gave the killer performance despite wearing the same decent gown. She made that average gown look so good and that’s all because of her performance. Imagine, if Adline were given amazing gowns, but she didn’t need one. At end of the day, it’s all up to the girl how to present and deliver the performance 😌😌😌😌😌
I totally agree with you. She is so humble because she was happy with whatever was given to her and worked it. It’s just us fans that wished she had given a winner gown, but like you said that it’s all up to the girl’s performance at the end. It was said that she didn't even get the gown till the last minute bcuz of the STRICT STRICT lockdown in India and the fact that she had covid so things didn't went out as planned. Somehow she got it in the last moment before leaving for US. However, with all these issues she nailed and slayed like a QUEEN! She didn't need "n" number of designers to make her gowns like Canada. She just had that one gown and at the end of the day she still made India proud and most importantly whatever gown you wear or whatever fancy expensive jewelry you have, what is most important is YOU and YOUR ATTITUDE!!! I am Canadian, and I am on Michael's Side here, Nova Stevens (of Canada) just DESTROYED the relationship between Canada and Philippines when it comes to the world of pageant.
I ‘m with Nova Stevens then when I read the comments from “racists”. But she disappointed me about her recent post on her IG, its just like she wants the world to sympathize on her. She reminds of the saying: what goes around comes around.
Are they keeping them or are they on loan? I always get the impression a lot of these gowns are on loan and if a contestant want to keep them post pageant they have to pay for them. New designers may donate their time and gowns to get publicity and to showcase their work.

I understand why M5 felt like they used him. They were happy for m5 to sponsor them, but when things got bad (yet to be proven), they threw him under the bus in public then left him hanging when he reached out to clear things out. Now muc will be left hanging, no more free dresses!!! You want it, pay for it!

There's definitely more to this story. Michael Cinco is not the only designer that Miss Universe Canada Org has exploited. Rian Fernandez also spoke out about his near-death experience in making gowns for Marta and MUC in 2018. Jaggy Glarino also spoke out about being asked to make a garment for Nova's preliminary interview outfit and being used. It seems that Davila and the organization has been making it a habit to exploit Filipino designers since 2018.
What can we expect from canadians? Im living here in toronto and being an asian entails discrimination. When they see you performing well they wont see you as an asset they will see you as a threat and thus they will eliminate you by discrediting you. What they did to M5 , speaks highly of their toxic character.

Another Filipino designer Rian Fernandez also shared his worst experience with Miss Universe Canada org during Martha's time last 2018, he made 4 different gowns, paid for the expenses for his team going to Thailand for fittings, but only to not use any single gown and no thank you at all. The org promised him that they will wear his designs, but they dont.

You made a VERY IMPORTANT POINT. Title holders win NOT just based on their performance on coronation day but ALSO based on what happens in the background which unfortunately MANY people do not know about or may just find out after the pageant itself. So let's just trust the judges in their decisions to select the right candidate to win the crown in any pageant
It’s a sad situation because nova looked stunning in his gowns. And her organization did not just burn a bridge with future contestants to be outfitted but also an opportunity for Nova to work with Michael cinco as an exclusive or a muse or a model at his next show or campaign. I was really stunned of the fact that they use gowns for FREE even from multiple designers. I thought joining Miss Universe will be very costly in terms of gowns.
Many contestants come from humble beginnings and wouldn’t be able to afford the gorgeous gowns we see at Miss Universe, that make the show so glamorous and incredible. Fortunately, there’s a lot of press surrounding Miss Universe so showcasing a gown on the Miss Universe stage is usually great press and will lead to future orders. The relationship between queens and sponsors is usually mutually beneficial. The queens have the press, and the designers offer their talents ❤️
"Free" means sponsorship. Not really free. The candidate does not pay the designer and the designer does not pay the candidate to showcase or model his gown. Both sides benefits, without monetary exchange. Now, if the candidate at the end decides not to wear the gown, she should return it or pay for it.

I'm glad you mentioned the behind the scenes aspect. It's a job interview, and you become a public figure working with all sorts of people. Rather see the right contestant get the job. Remember to be supportive of all the contestants, because it's a lot of time preparation and work.

Sure, she may have had a bad interview with the judges, but no credible sources are saying this. Here you come spreading rumors adding more fire to the fuel. Those whom have never experienced an ounce of it will find ways to discredit and justify the injustices. Yes, ever since Nova has won Miss Canada, she has received an intense amount of racial comments for her skin and looks. Then to add fuel to the fire, when she spoke about BLM and posted screen shots of where an abundance of the negativity was coming from, the offenders tried to justify the hate and gloss over it by asking her to not only highlight them but everyone else involved. Two wrongs don't make a right. She and other black contestants that do not have the standard beauty looks are given such hard times for decisions made by others. To be honest, Miss Universe 2020 already shown us what direction they were headed in for a winner with the changes made. Most Latin judges are racist and bias when it comes to beauty competitions. I have no doubt that Nova was already eliminated from the running the minute she was crowned Miss Canada. She wasn't what one would call "the acceptable black person." I just want her to finish her reign and move on with her life. She accomplished one part of her goal and that's all that matters. Everyone else can sit and be salty.

Maybe theyre trying to get the same publicity they had previously on Filipinos bashing her color. I feel sad for future Miss Canada representatives. This may not only affect Michael Cinco but also other famous and well-renowned Filipino designers. The handlers will have to look for other designers now because the comment they made really burnt bridges. Hope this will be a lesson to every National Directors. Hi Dani. I also saw a video on instagram from Nova about this issue before she eventually turned her profile to private. I just hope she and her organization have reached out to M5 to address this privately. Sadly, I have also seen some comments from the org demanding for some airtime from media to address this which I find absurd and unnecessary. It’s just telling how immature the organization is to handle issues such as this. If I were MUO, I won’t work with such organization which could eventually turn difficult to work with. I feel sad for the women that they will be sending in the future who had nothing to do with this. Now going back to the video from Nova, since this has gone public anyway, I am hoping she together with her organization have explained the issue once and for all, and just apologize because damages have been done. Apparently, the video does not help. For me, it should be the MUC org that should be speaking and addressing this in the first place and not Nova to protect her, the girls who will compete for Canada in the future and the org as a whole. Remember that racism post that the organization should have not allowed, well at least in the middle of the pageant. I believe Nova did not deserve the hateful comments towards her but her post did not help in her pageant journey at all. There is a perfect time to do that, most probably after the pageant. This is not just all about the gowns now but being respectful, thinking before you click and giving credits to where it is due.
I had heard rumblings that one of the favorites who didn't make top 21 were "throwing attitude". As a South African, I was hoping it wasn't our girl, but perhaps we now know who it was??

Michael Cinco doesn't have to be dragged into this pageant drama. He just is genuinely gracious enough to dress as many candidates as he possibly can. Knowing that he did all these with his own pocket says a lot about his kindness and abusing his kindness will only backfire. Many candidates can only dream of wearing a Michael Cinco gown for the pageant and Ms Canada had 2 from him, that is more than enough for her. The gowns doesn't make a queen anyway so...

I live in Dubai and can personally attest to the fact that M5 is one of the biggest designers here, not to mention very sought after. His couture house is in Dubai Design District. That in itself says a lot about him and his brand, after all, you gotta be “something” to be there in that area. Apart from that, his clientele in the Gulf is massive, he’s made dresses and wedding gowns for Sheikhas across GCC and he’s also always highlighted every Arab Fashion Week, (sometimes even more than Arab designers). Big loss for Team Canada. Doesn’t hurt to be grateful. The bridge they’ve burnt ain’t lighting up the way moving forward too. 🤦🏻♀️

Earlier today Nova went live on IG, and Mgmode commented something to the effect downplaying the drama and playing victim. I said “You and your big mouth are to blame.” They blocked me. Lol
Nova didnt really apologize or cleared things up. To me it sounded like she probably want to blame the mgmode boys for talking too much but she couldn’t. She’s caught in the middle for sure.
Anyway, I read M5 reached out to the guys of mgmode to talk to him but he felt ignored that’s why he decided to speak out. In the end, not a loss for M5. Definitely loss for MUC, free (gown) sponsorship is free and that a big help as we all know competing for MU is very expensive.

I’ll also add that after working as the coach for Miss Philippines USA, that Filipinos are some of the most gracious people I’ve ever met. Every time I went to rehearsals the contestants thanked me, and their parents would also thank me as well as offer to feed me. 😭❤️ always a pleasure.

And India gave Adline only one decent gown which she wore in both prelims and finals. And still she made it to the top 5. This just goes to show that gowns don’t matter, what matters is the way a girl carries herself. Adline gave the killer performance despite wearing the same decent gown. She made that average gown look so good and that’s all because of her performance. Imagine, if Adline were given amazing gowns, but she didn’t need one. At end of the day, it’s all up to the girl how to present and deliver the performance 😌😌😌😌😌

It was said that she didn't even get the gown till the last minute bcuz of the STRICT STRICT lockdown in India and the fact that she had covid so things didn't went out as planned. Somehow she got it in the last moment before leaving for US. However, with all these issues she nailed and slayed like a QUEEN! She didn't need "n" number of designers to make her gowns like Canada. She just had that one gown and at the end of the day she still made India proud and most importantly whatever gown you wear or whatever fancy expensive jewelry you have, what is most important is YOU and YOUR ATTITUDE!!! I am Canadian, and I am on Michael's Side here, Nova Stevens (of Canada) just DESTROYED the relationship between Canada and Philippines when it comes to the world of pageant.
I'm a filipino here in Canada but I'm sad to hear all of this. Hopefully it will not affect the friendship between Canadians and filipinos.

Are they keeping them or are they on loan? I always get the impression a lot of these gowns are on loan and if a contestant want to keep them post pageant they have to pay for them. New designers may donate their time and gowns to get publicity and to showcase their work.
For free? It's an exchange for promotion on the Miss Universe stage, similar to how designers give actresses gowns for red carpets.

It's just a shame that they are ruining their future candidates' image. The organization has been very shady for the past years weren't they involve in faking their candidate's credential during 2018, their crown being an imitation to the current crown, and now this. I understand why M5 felt like they used him. They were happy for m5 to sponsor them, but when things got bad (yet to be proven), they threw him under the bus in public then left him hanging when he reached out to clear things out. Now muc will be left hanging, no more free dresses!!! You want it, pay for it!
I would always remember your quote "MAY THE BRIDGES YOU BURN, LIGHT YOUR WAY" but I think what happened here they didn't light their way but turned there hopes of wearing any FILIPINO designers in the future into ashes becoz of what they've done. There's definitely more to this story. Michael Cinco is not the only designer that Miss Universe Canada Org has exploited.
Rian Fernandez also spoke out about his near-death experience in making gowns for Marta and MUC in 2018. Jaggy Glarino also spoke out about being asked to make a garment for Nova's preliminary interview outfit and being used.
It seems that Davila and the organization has been making it a habit to exploit Filipino designers since 2018.
What can we expect from canadians? Im living here in toronto and being an asian entails discrimination. When they see you performing well they wont see you as an asset they will see you as a threat and thus they will eliminate you by discrediting you. What they did to M5 , speaks highly of their toxic character.
Davila seems ungrateful and shameless. He should be fired after this PR fiasco.

Another Filipino designer Rian Fernandez also shared his worst experience with Miss Universe Canada org during Martha's time last 2018, he made 4 different gowns, paid for the expenses for his team going to Thailand for fittings, but only to not use any single gown and no thank you at all. The org promised him that they will wear his designs, but they dont.

I was really stunned of the fact that they use gowns for FREE even from multiple designers. I thought joining Miss Universe will be very costly in terms of gowns.
Many contestants come from humble beginnings and wouldn’t be able to afford the gorgeous gowns we see at Miss Universe, that make the show so glamorous and incredible. Fortunately, there’s a lot of press surrounding Miss Universe so showcasing a gown on the Miss Universe stage is usually great press and will lead to future orders. The relationship between queens and sponsors is usually mutually beneficial. The queens have the press, and the designers offer their talents ❤️
"Free" means sponsorship. Not really free. The candidate does not pay the designer and the designer does not pay the candidate to showcase or model his gown. Both sides benefits, without monetary exchange. Now, if the candidate at the end decides not to wear the gown, she should return it or pay for it.

I'm glad you mentioned the behind the scenes aspect. It's a job interview, and you become a public figure working with all sorts of people. Rather see the right contestant get the job. Remember to be supportive of all the contestants, because it's a lot of time preparation and work.

Sure, she may have had a bad interview with the judges, but no credible sources are saying this. Here you come spreading rumors adding more fire to the fuel. It's the same thing where someone made an entire video stating that Miss Israel withdrew from the competition because of war, etc...when in reality she's of the Jewish faith and observe Sabbath, hence why she couldn't fully participate in preliminaries on Saturday evening. The internet is a very dangerous place that will cost a lot of people their life experiences. Anywho, I would like a member of the selection committee to confirm this rumor.

Those whom have never experienced an ounce of it will find ways to discredit and justify the injustices. Yes, ever since Nova has won Miss Canada, she has received an intense amount of racial comments for her skin and looks. Then to add fuel to the fire, when she spoke about BLM and posted screen shots of where an abundance of the negativity was coming from, the offenders tried to justify the hate and gloss over it by asking her to not only highlight them but everyone else involved. Two wrongs don't make a right. She and other black contestants that do not have the standard beauty looks are given such hard times for decisions made by others.
To be honest, Miss Universe 2020 already shown us what direction they were headed in for a winner with the changes made. Most Latin judges are racist and bias when it comes to beauty competitions. I have no doubt that Nova was already eliminated from the running the minute she was crowned Miss Canada. She wasn't what one would call "the acceptable black person."
I just want her to finish her reign and move on with her life. She accomplished one part of her goal and that's all that matters. Everyone else can sit and be salty.
She has the looks to be a supermodel, ..but for Miss Universe?..nah!

Clearly Canada was Cincos favorite as she was all over his Instagram All year. He did not give this much attention to any other contestant.

She also was not thinking of her future successors as now she has just ruined Canada's long term sponsorship with Cinco.

Maybe theyre trying to get the same publicity they had previously on Filipinos bashing her color. They knew it's going to blow up again if they drag a Filipino into their pageant mess since there's an apparent pageant fan base coming from the Philippines. It's just sad when a person who was generous enough to give support didnt even get the respect he deserves. They make generous people think twice in helping. That's not good.

I feel sad for future Miss Canada representatives. This may not only affect Michael Cinco but also other famous and well-renowned Filipino designers. The handlers will have to look for other designers now because the comment they made really burnt bridges. Hope this will be a lesson to every National Directors. Knowing that not every Filipina representatives can wear M5 creations and Miss Canada org can have them FOR FREE??? OMG. That is a surprise.

Hi Dani. I also saw a video on instagram from Nova about this issue before she eventually turned her profile to private. I just hope she and her organization have reached out to M5 to address this privately.
Sadly, I have also seen some comments from the org demanding for some airtime from media to address this which I find absurd and unnecessary. It’s just telling how immature the organization is to handle issues such as this. If I were MUO, I won’t work with such organization which could eventually turn difficult to work with. I feel sad for the women that they will be sending in the future who had nothing to do with this.
Now going back to the video from Nova, since this has gone public anyway, I am hoping she together with her organization have explained the issue once and for all, and just apologize because damages have been done. Apparently, the video does not help.
For me, it should be the MUC org that should be speaking and addressing this in the first place and not Nova to protect her, the girls who will compete for Canada in the future and the org as a whole. Remember that racism post that the organization should have not allowed, well at least in the middle of the pageant. I believe Nova did not deserve the hateful comments towards her but her post did not help in her pageant journey at all. There is a perfect time to do that, most probably after the pageant.
This is not just all about the gowns now but being respectful, thinking before you click and giving credits to where it is due.
I had heard rumblings that one of the favorites who didn't make top 21 were "throwing attitude". As a South African, I was hoping it wasn't our girl, but perhaps we now know who it was??

Michael Cinco doesn't have to be dragged into this pageant drama. He just is genuinely gracious enough to dress as many candidates as he possibly can. Knowing that he did all these with his own pocket says a lot about his kindness and abusing his kindness will only backfire. Many candidates can only dream of wearing a Michael Cinco gown for the pageant and Ms Canada had 2 from him, that is more than enough for her. The gowns doesn't make a queen anyway so...

This is quite sad to hear because so many Filipinos were actually rooting for Nova. So many people were shocked not to see Canada in the Top 21. I personally even put her on my Top 5 picks.
