In the 1930s my grandfather, a plumber and steamfitter, together with other Union members to build one another's homes. For example, my grandfather helped lay the cement foundation with a friend who did that professionally. Then when it was his turn to have a house built, my grandfather installed all plumbing and heating throughout his home. With this collective labor, home ownership became far more reasonable. This is something few people practice and benefit from today.

A lot to think about here. Excellent show. I would love to have a follow-up with Josh and Carolyn discussing power consumption on their homestead. How to balance food preservation/food security for that many people VS running the freeze dryer, freezers, etc. Have you ever run electricity monitors to see what the consumption per appliance is for your property?

Taxes also pay for things like infrastructure that aren't commercially viable to build otherwise and be free. Your internet bill would be sky high without it and you wouldn't be able to set foot of your property onto a road without paying some multinational for it otherwise. Toll roads and bridges aren't really paying the cost of build and maintainance now with amounts people can pay. There is good value in paying taxes, just who pays how much is where there should be serious questions asked.

I did everything you are talking about back in 2013 in CHILE SOUTH AMERICA!
    MORE FREE.
    LESS TAXES (no property Tax)
    Smaller big (Little) brother.
    NO PERMITS
    NO INSPECTIONS.
NO POWER OR WATER BILLS OR SEWER all off grid.
No Insurance requirements mandated by the government (Auto /home/ life/ company or business .... NONE)
NO CRIME.... the last murder with in 45 min circle of my house was over 2 years ago. The town near us has NEVER HAD A MURDER. So we are safe!
    No raw milk laws.
    No permits for farming
DID I SAY NO PROPERTY TAX?....
No construction certificate of occupancy needed... we built our own house. We did not need to ask the government or get permission or inspections or approvals.
As a veteran we looked at the former USA and culturally we saw a wasteland. Corruption has over run the former USA. Hey Everyone is a racist... just ask!
We are able to prioritize our life now (GOD / Family / ............................ country) We live in a Christian country that just recently sadly approved abortion, one of the last hold outs on the planet.
We have no mortgage. Land is cheaper here overall.
We raise very much of our own food / meat and vegg.
I love what you are doing but I just feel like we are doing it better.
There are very few people here in Chile, but it is a FIRST WORLD COUNTRY (Fiber Optic and Power and such).
We no longer live in the center of the nuclear bulls eye. We have little to no stress. Chileans Love North Americans and live is nice and slow for us.
    Plus Chile is spectacularly beautiful.
I help people move here. We have a wonderful Chat group to help people relocate to Chile. Not expensive or hard to join but private.
    We love it here. Jim

Someone, please, explain how using a solar system, inverter, batteries is truthfully "off grid". It would be interesting to follow from raw material to manufacturing to market each item that we use.

Go where your skills are needed to make society better for the nation. You’re leaving room for immigrants to fill the urban areas and cities.
