the kingdom hearts title names are stupid but they match the games theme's pretty well. 358/2 days is because the game place over 358 days and is seen through the perspective of 2 people. is the name still weird? yes. does it make more sense with context? also yes.

I’ve always been a fan of the way pokemon names their games. It’s simple but effective, and there’s rarely any confusion (this is a purely main game take)

I disagree only for the fact that I have no idea what the difference between scarlet and violet is. (I have the same issue with all gens) however I do think the naming itself is really effective. (This is coming from a SUPER casual Pokémon fan who has only played two games)
The only exception in my opinion is scarlet and violet. Why not scarlet and crimson, or violet and purple
There is zero reason as to why there’s two different versions of a Pokémon release. Made sense back in the days of physical trading but now days, it’s nothing but a scheme to get more money from their players.

The Horizon Zero Dawn series has the best names because the thing that comes after “Horizon” has lore relevance like in the first game “Horizon Zero Dawn” “Zero Dawn” is the name of the secret project that saved the planet and the second game is called “Horizon Forbidden West” and takes place in the Forbidden West it just makes sense!
I mean, they could have just named the first game "Horizon" and named the sequel "Horizon 2", but that would have been boring! Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are interesting names that grab the player's attention, and like you said, are relevant to the lore of their respective games.
But to someone that hasn't played the game, the names will still get mixed up.

Uncharted also did a good job naming their games, I like how they have their own titles, but they also have their numbers so no one gets confused on how the timeline goes
U forgot about Assassins Creed. That’s probably one of the goofiest series’s when it comes to naming their games

The moment I saw the title I thought about Mortal Kombat. Honestly, I didnt even watch the video yet but that shit better be the most confusing one considering we have like 2 games called Mortal kombat (one its the first, 2nd one its a reboot which took place in 2011, 9th in the series) and now we just got another game called mortal kombat 1 which is 12th in the series and its another reboot, like wtf
Tbh, I mentioned it in the reboot section, but it really is terrible and should pay for its crimes
@@TheMacroShow Yeah, and the reboots are even weirder because MK from 2011 is a reboot to the first 3 games. MK1 (the newest) its a reboot to the whole timeline itself but honestly I cannot even call it a reboot because by the end of the story old timelines emerge so its actually a sequel to events of Mortal Kombat 11. Legit the names are so confusing and whenever I try to get someone into Mortal Kombat the story its always fked up for them just from the titles alone
They should have kept using cool one-word subtitles like "Deception" and "Armageddon".

For anyone who cares, here's why Kingdom Hearts spinoffs are named what they are:
Chain of memories: A game focused on remembering things, and the idea that one memory leads to another, in a chain.
358 Days/2: The story is about the lives of 2 people, told over 358 days.
Birth by sleep: The plot has an important moment around sleep and rebirth. (Arguably, it should be Rebirth by Sleep, but Re: is already used to designate remakes in the series, such as Re:Chain of memories)
Coded: The game takes place in a computer simulation.
Dream Drop Distance: A game about travelling through dreams, with a mechanic of switching characters called Drop.
0.2 Birth By Sleep: A fragmentary passage (oh boy): A short tech demo type-game taking place at the end of Kingdom Hearts 1, featuring a character from Birth By Sleep.
Melody of memory: A music-based game focused on the memories of a series protagonist.
I agree, the titles are stupid. But in context, they at least have a reason for it.

Yeah but to give kojoma credit you should play the games in the release order if you want to get the full experience playing MGS3 Before MGS for example may ruin alot of the surprises (and yes I intentionally said kojoma)

God Of War kinda makes sense. It's the first time we play as Kratos in the Norse Pantheon and there's almost a thousand years between the two games (3 and 2018). I said it kinda makes sense because they could've just named it differently. Now it's difficult to search whether I want something related to the original GOW or the 2018 one. And it is totally a sequel. No reboot, no soft-reboot nothing.
I feel like The Legend of Zelda definitely made the right choice with avoiding numbers.
Numbering games makes you feel like their connected on an important level to their previous entries, but that’s only ever applied to BOTW & TOTK. I myself played Majora’s Mask before OoT & still had an amazing time even without having context from OoT.
The one time that Nintendo did number Zelda games was with Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, and I don’t think there was a need for it because you didn’t HAVE to play the first game to understand what was going on.
Battlefield has to be up there with the most inconsistent naming convention

In defense to Kingdom Hears, the names are consistent to the plot, which are both very confusing. Nice video, feel you pain. I cannot tell my friends about the 358/2 days since I have no idea how to pronounce it in my language.

I think Undertale did it cleverly with Deltarune being an anagram of Undertale, which is perfect because it shows that both games are very similar in the characters and gameplay, but completely different in story.

The Borderlands series is pretty good with naming. you have the first one that doesn't have a number then 2, The Pre Sequel because it takes place before the second game but was released after, then 3. And Tales/New Tales and Wonderlands are spinoffs.
we do have to keep in mind with final fantasy, that in the west ff6 was named ff3

There are some franchises that try to number their entries, but have a completely different and messy chronological order.
Like Metal gear series:
1. Metal Gear Solid 3 snake eater / subsistence.
2. Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.
3. Metal Gear Solid Peace walker.
4. Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes.
5. Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain.
6. Metal Gear.
7. Metal Gear 2.
8. Metal Gear Solid (Integral).
9. Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty / Substance.
10. Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of Patriots.
11. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.
Then there are also spinoffs like Metal Gear Acid duology, Metal Gear Survive, Metal Gear 2 Snake's Revenge and more.

at this point whenever i see "(game) 2" then i just assume is a big update.
When I think of strange namings, I always think of Assassins Creed considering AC3 is actually the 5th game, sincethey decided to make 2 sequels to AC2 because of its success. then after ac4 they just ditched the numbers entirely which was probably a good call since they pump out so many of them

I don't get why video game companies keep adding a "1" to things that aren't the first installment, Xbox One, Battlefield 1, and now Mortal Kombat 1, it's so stupid especially since you never see the actual first installment of anything labeled with a "1", also you didn't mention that between Madden NFL 13 and Madden NFL 15 was Madden NFL 25, ever since that game came out I wondered what the 2024 installment of Madden would be, and now I'm just terrified we're so close to that point already.

you should look at guilty gears naming system, there are like 10 different guilty gear x games, all with different varying titles, but (practically) the same game, from my memory, there is guilty gear x, guilty gear xx, guilty gear x2, guilty gear xrd -sign- (what does that even mean) and the list goes on

half life is an odd one, the first games makes sense, Half Life, then Half Life: Opposing force, then Half Life: Blue Shift, even early versions of CS was Half Life: Counter Strike, simple and cool. But then half life 2 came and scrambled everything, specially with the episodes, there is Half Life 2, Half Life 2 Episode 1 and Half Life 2 Episode 2, and the fun thing is that the Episode 1 is actually a direct sequel to Half Life 2. I know many cases of ppl buying Episode one thinking is the start of the game and getting to confused with what is happening.
Opposing Force and Blue Shift lacked numbers both due to being expansions of the first HL and taking place at approximately the same time. CS was named as such because it was a mod of Half-Life, similar to how the first Team Fortress is sometimes referred to as Quake Team Fortress due to being a mod for Quake. And I think Half-Life 2 was a good enough name to allow it to be distanced from the games set in Black Mesa.
But yeah, the episode names are kinda dumb.
I'm curious how do MW fans spell out the old trilogy and the reboot one?
Old is usually the number (MW2) and new is the Roman numerals (MWII)

Funny that you indirectly mentioned Xenoblade Chronicles (and especially Future Connected) at 8:53 because technically due to the thing with the prequel/sequel DLCs which are not numeral at all and sometimes even feature standalone releases, it chronologically and releasewise would get kinda convoluted.
Xenoblade 1 was followed with Xernoblade X which originally was thought to be a spinoff, but without spoiling to much, the more recent games in the series mightve changed that.
So technically xenoblade 2 and Xenoblade 3 are Xenoblade 3 and Xenoblade 4 in the Xenoblade *series* but not in the Xenoblade *trilogy*
Then we have Future Connected, which is an epilogue/sequel story to Xenoblade 1, and Future Redeemed which is a prequel to Xenoblade... 3, Xenoblade 2 features its own prequel story called "Torna - The Golden Country" which has a standalone release so technically Xenoblade 3 is Xenoblade 5 in the Xenoblade Series due to X and Torna, but also it would be Xenoblade 4 in the trilogy.
Thankfully the eventhough the chronological Releaseorder would be Xenoblade 1, X, 2, Torna, 1 again, 1 DLC (FC), 3, 3 DLC (FR) it turns out to be far more simpler in the endproduct. Just a little tidbit i wanted to mention
