I love Suspiria. My favourite thing about it is the fact that (according to my history of cinema professor) the color palet was inspired by Walt Disney's Snow White. Which weirdly makes sense although it shouldn't

    • @robmann400
      @robmann400 Год назад +11

Maybe not so weird... I have read that Suspiria was going to have ten year old girls as the dance students until someone convinced the director that he couldn’t have on screen brutal murders where the victims were children. People would lose there minds and it would immediately be banned. Apparently they didn’t adjust the script after they bumped the students’ age up so the dialogue - “S is for snakes” - and some of the behaviour of the students is very juvenile. It just adds to the wonderfully disorienting atmosphere. Thank you for the Snow White info.

One interesting thing to note about this movie. Dario Argento initially wanted this movie to be about children, but given the limitations of child actors and shooting at night etc, he had to use adults, but notice how they often act child-like (the Suzy is the name of a snake), the bullying and the fact the door handles are so high up, so the actors have to react up to open doors. It’s just another layer to the genius of this movie.

The last technicolor film made in Europe using the old three-pack process. Argento had to go all the way to Japan to buy up enough film stock to complete the film. The soundtrack music was recorded before shooting and actually played on set to terrify the actors. Imagine these sounds and images on the big screen. I've heard that on its initial run it was only played in theatres with four track sound systems, which predated Dolby sound. It must have been sensory overload for filmgoers. Fantastically, beautiful film. And I want to suggest that you react to more films in this specific type of genre called “giallo”, which is Italian for yellow. It’s called that because these types of murder mystery books had yellow covers, but also the association the color itself has in Italy. Little fun fact there. But there’s usually an emphasis on the murders and they’re always pretty brutal and like to show you every second of it. Some good ones that come to mind are “Tenebrae”, “Deep Red” and another film that is part of the “Three Mothers Trilogy” like Suspiria, “Inferno”.

Dario Argento has a long list of films in this genre to his credit. Likewise Lucio Fulci and several other directors. This amazing soundtrack is the work of the master's courtly collaborators, the band Goblin. I sincerely recommend listening to their other work. Even films on the fringes of this trend, such as "The House with Laughing Windows", are worth a look. If I were to make a THE horror films list... this would be on that list right next to Evil Dead, The Exorcist, The Shining and Dawn of the Dead.
My personal story with this one is as follows.. we found this vhs rental that was still active in mid 2000's (probably one of the few remaining in the entire city if not the last one) and we'd rent 3 movies every weekend and one of the weeks we rented this one. I don't even remember what the other 2 were that week, I just remember I was mesmerized when I saw this.
Soundtrack is by Goblin who are an Italian group that made a lot of soundtracks but this one is probably the one they're most known for.
Interesting thing about the movie: it was supposedly originally written with kids in mind, 8 to 10 years old, but the producers were hesitant so Dario Argento just aged up the without changing the script (which explains why the characters behave in a very childlike manner). Can you imagine a 10 year old falling into the barbwire room? That'd be really gruesome.

This is one of my favorite horror movies of all time and it's definitely my #1 Dario Argento movie. It's a very eerie audio-visual feast for all senses thanks to Argento's unique use of colors + sets and the very unsettling and great soundtrack by Goblin. It's not for everyone but those who are into it are almost fanatic fans of it (I am) as well as other Dario Argento films. He made his best work in the 70'ies and 80'ies with movies like the amazing 1975 movie Deep Red aka Profondo Rosso, often cited as the best giallo of all time. After Suspiria Dario Argento collaborated with George Romero on Dawn of the Dead (1978) and once again brought in Goblin to do the soundtrack. Dario Argento took care of the European release which he edited down to a much shorter but better paced version of the movie while using more of Goblin's music. In 1982 he made the excellent who-dunnit giallo movie Tenebrae which features one of the best one-shot scenes I've ever seen. In 1985 he did Phenomena with Jennifer Connelly in one of her earliest roles. He combined giallo, horror and supernatural fantasy in that one and he used Steadycam for many long, prowling shots.
    * In Italian cinema, Giallo (Italian for yellow) is a genre of mystery fiction and thrillers and often contains slasher, crime fiction, psychological thriller, psychological horror, sexploitation, and, less frequently, supernatural horror elements.
I hope we get to see more reactions of Argento's movies, specifically the ones I mentioned which tend to be the most Argento fans favorites. They all have Argento's unique filming style (he was heavily influenced by the giallo master director Mario Bava) and he used Goblin for soundtracking most of the 70'ies and 80'ies movies.

Awesome review! My cool dad took me to see Suspiria when I was in high school back in the late 1970s. The film blew my mind. LOL! It's like a fever dream. I love the cinematography, color, sound, soundtrack, etc. and it's on my Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies list. I'm a big fan of lead actress Jessica Harper.

Other Dario Argento films? YES, please!
My fav is DEEP RED. Maybe the best giallo out there (but you should watch other gialli, too. Especially Mario Bava's BLOOD AND BLACK LACE which (more or less) startet the genre. Mario Bava influenced Dario Argento with the use of colors (and other things).
More Argento's you have to see: INFERNO (the "sequel" to SUSPIRIA), THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (his first film), and TENEBRE. But everything by him until the late 80s is worth a watch.

I was going to leave a comment about how crazy Italian filmmaking was at the time, especially how common it was to film without audio with actors from different countries delivering dialogue in their own language and then dub everything to fit different languages after, but instead I'll just say that Argento had an incredbile run of films through the 70's and 80's. Especially when Goblin was making the music. This and the film Deep Red are usually considered his best films. It's hard to say which soundtrack I prefer. Goblin was every bit as good at making music as Dario Argento was at making films.

When the woman was dead on the floor with the glass in her face, there is a spot of blood shaped like a witch on a broom. Also, throughout the film Cl audio Simonetti says "Witch". He also keeps whispering that there are witches upstairs.

The fact that because of italian film-making policy at the time movies had to be dubbed for the english audience makes signor Dario Argentos films even more surreal and weird, atleast to me. It brings a sort of surreal character to the voices which fits perfectly into the movie. Masterpiece!

Probably my favorite horror film ever. Just has a special quality to it, and peculiarities and touches that I love, most notably the immersive and intense atmosphere but little things too:
●Those glowing eyes outside the (second floor!) window
●The most ominous lightning/thunder effects ever
●Unnecessary but awesome gargoyle rain spouts
●Foreboding and foreshadowing, dreamlike POV strolls down the creepy but beautiful hallways
●Tall door handles making the characters appear even more child-like and vulnerable
●Those witches' shadows scurrying on the courtyard walls, portending doom for the blind-man
    ●The art-nouvea, fairly-tale like architecture
●Goblin's soundtrack serving as an entrancing incantation on the audience itself
●Mater Markos' otherworldly growling, raspy voice
●The paranoia caused by characters constantly being manipulated both on and off screen
●A barbed-wire room that has no logical reason for its existence
●The uneasy realization that all the students have left for the night...except for Suzy
●That bat just patiently waiting for Suzy to open the window

Goblin (the band that did the score) worked on a number movies in the 70's. The soundtrack to Deep Red (also a film by Dario Argento; it's a great little murder mystery) is a standout to me, but I think most people are familiar with Goblin doing the music for George Romero's Dawn of the Dead.

Dario Argento is the master of the set piece, check out the extended crane shot from Tenebrae. Also look out for "Mario Bava's The Girl Who Knew Too Much" and "Lamberto Bava's Demons" ( It was recently remastered and looks amazing ). Giallo isn't for everyone but if you get it you'll love it.

A giallo is a murder mystery with elements of horror and eroticism. This is a horror film. American fans confuse this issue often but no Italian person would ever call "Suspiria" a giallo. "Deep Red" is a giallo. Hell, "Psycho", "Seven", and "Silence of the Lambs" are gialli.

But I must warn you ahead, Inferno is tamed in violence compared to Suspiria and Mother of Tears. But story wise it’s not bad. But Suspiria is one of the best horror films ever made because of the vibe, music and atmosphere. I always recommend this film for anyone during spooky season.
