  • Red Komodo 6k Auto Focus First Look
    Red Komodo represents a major shift in the ideology of Red Digital Cinema. It's their first attempt at bringing their premium cinema camera and codec to the masses.
    One of the major hurdles that young filmmakers and videographers struggle with when moving into more traditional cinema cameras is the lack of auto focus so prevalent on mirrorless cameras.
    This is a simple autofocus test to see whether or not this camera could work for some RUclipsrs who shoot much of their videos in studio.
    This is not in any way an exhaustive camera test, but rather a simple, stick the camera on a tripod first look.
    Please keep in mind that this is still a beta version of the camera firmware so as Red continues to finesse every thing, this will get even better.
    Hope this is helpful for some of you.

      Definitely better than any of my previous Panasonic mirrorless or A7S2 and it'll only get better as they update the firmware. #stoked

    Nice to see some autofocus tests. I wish red had this in the dsmc2 already. Thanks for posting. Looks promesing.

      Wish my Dragon X had an Autofocus function, but stoked to see Red moving in this direction. Hopefully a sign of what they'll bring to future DSMC3 cameras. Aloha

    is there any settings I have to select for auto focus? because I just got my Komodo and I connect with my 18-35 Sigma and it's not doing auto focus. can you guide me, please?

    This looks great. I’d love to see more Komodo footage and your opinion of the camera itself.

      Thanks Jon! We've been on stay at home orders here in Hawaii, so I haven't been able to get out and shoot much lately... hoping that'll change soon. Will do my best to get some footage out soon though. Stay safe buddy!

    Awesome first test! Especially if you are just using it for a simple talking head video like you demonstrated. Autofocus isn't bad at all!

    • @BradWatanabe
      @BradWatanabe  4 года назад

      Even in it's beta form, it's pretty usable for talking head stuff. Hoping with it's final production firmware, it'll be usable with a gimbal.

      That was on the original v1 firmware. It's actually gotten better with some of the newer firmware releases. I'm excited to see how far they can take this technology. And though I mostly use manual lenses that don't allow for autofocus, I'm stoked that this is an option now.

      I think this is going to be super interesting once the full production firmware is out. Should be fun as a gimbal camera option!

    Is that wobbly effect you can't fix in post only on longer lenses? Will that happen with 18-50 range

      It's not quite as good as Canon or Sony just yet, but still in Beta and getting better with every firmware update.

      Not yet, although people have guessed that it will be available as a firmware update one day... I'm not waiting on that though :)

      Planning to get this camera on a gimbal shooting out the back of a truck once our stay at home orders are let up here in Hawaii. Definitely fun to see the lack of rolling shutter on this camera.

    Hi Brad. This video looks amazing. Please may I ask... In its current beta version, does the Komodo maintain good autofocus like it is in your talking head video for longer periods... Like for over ten or twenty minutes? Or does it go in and out of focus? Thanks mate. Jesus loves you!

    • @BradWatanabe
      @BradWatanabe  3 года назад +1

      Thanks buddy. Jesus loves you too. :) Autofocus is definitely still in beta mode and getting better with every revision, but still not as accurate or usable as my Sony A73, but hopefully it'll get there. But for interviews n things, I prefer to just manual focus. Aloha

    Yo Brad, do you know if you can minimize the crop factor by use a RF to EF speed booster specifically when shooting in 4K? I think there would be vignetting in 6K since that’s basically a full sensor read out.

    • @BradWatanabe
      @BradWatanabe  4 года назад +1

      I've been considering the same thing. Might have to pick one up to give it a shot. You shooting on Komodo?

    • @JPtheDIVERSE
      @JPtheDIVERSE 4 года назад +1

      Brad Watanabe I really wish I was shooting with it already but in due time. Definitely would be the next camera body I’m interested in. Just taking the time to learn as much as I can with all these reviews and footage tests. The speed booster isn’t something a lot of people have tried to pair with it, it would be interesting. If you do get to try I would love to see your results 🤙🏽

    great!!, what adapter EF-RF brand did you use? thanks

    • @BradWatanabe
      @BradWatanabe  4 года назад +3

      Red actually shipped the basic Canon RF to EF adapter with the camera, so that's what I'm currently using. Might end up getting the Canon version with the ND filter option since some third party peeps are building their own NDs now.
