While I’ve already seen sooo many comments similar to this, I still gotta agree to it.
I didn't mind Cole's ability being Kinetic energy absorbtion and redirection. To use an X-Men analogy, in a group of warriors where we have Cyclops, Storm and Quicksilver, to bring up a few examples, I'm fine with them throwing Bishop into the mix.
I was so pissed they Killed Kung Lao. He stood out

Its almost someone else filmed the other 90% of the film......the 1st 10 minutes was absolutely flawless and amazing and badass with scorpion. But then they transition to the present day.........hmmm.
As I'm from the UK we did not get this, it's not on any platform for us. I was gutted yesterday as once again we miss out, now I'm glad. Having your review has saved me money, I'm no longer gutted!
Ever notice in the 1995 movie there's no blood but everyone is always sweating? Here's my new theory. The 1995 movie is based on the Super Nintendo version of Mortal Kombat, and not the real uncensored game. I feel like that theory holds up WELL.

the MK movie was initialy bound to fail, until the trailer came out and got everyone's attention. The hype was lit and the movie had great expectations. a 3 stars rating is good enough for me, i didn't expect a masterpiece.
I thought it kinda sucked, except for all the sub-zero/scorpion parts and Kano's funny parts. The 1995 film had better fights.

I agree that Kano was one of the best parts of this movie. My favorite part with him was when he was training with Liu Kang and Kang leg swept him 3x in a row. Kano tried avoiding the 3rd, jumped too early and was like " ahh fuck" and landed into the 3rd one. I thought it was a clever reference to move spamming in fighting games. LAUGHALITY!.
I was pissed that Goro went out so easily and quickly. They also could of killed off Cole, Sonya and Jax, it wouldn't of bothered me. I didn't like that there was no tournament. The fatalities were cool though.

Yep, you all nailed it for me and Neko as well. Should have stuck with the Scorpion/Sub story line and taken the Cole Young story out. Wasted opportunity in my opinion here.

It’s a decent movie, a lot of fan service and Easter eggs but you can tell the script was probably re-written a million times. The Cole character reeks of the studio wanting a new character so I knew it was gonna be generic as hell so the bar was pretty low. They NEED to find a way to bring Josh Lawson back somehow, he stole the whole movie.

Both of you are definitely right about your review of Mortal Kombat 2021. They did not need to make a generic original character like Cole Young to give the movie a story. The visuals and the violence is good, but the story is far apart from the central plot of the Mortal Kombat games. A major disappointment, Hollywood never stops being a total f*ck-up.
Ok first off, absolutely loved your Liu Kang impression. I did enjoy the movie I thought there was a lot there to love especially with sub zero and scorpion for me personally. At the same time, I do 100% agree with pretty much all of your flaws for this film especially with Scorpion and Sub Zero specifically, but overall I did enjoy it as mentioned previously.
If I had to rate it (and I don't know if this is average or not)

Great review Guys! I just wanted to add that Mortal Kombat only had a 50 mil budget and also time restrictions as well. For what they gave us with this movie is very fair to be honest. Keep up the great work!
Liu Kang made me cring so hard I had to ignore him and wait for the next fight scene

I feel like you missed something. If you look at the opening scene, both Hanzo and Bi-Han clearly have the mark (although it's implied with Bi-Han). There's an implication with the opening scene, that Hanzo was murdered before a tournament, where he could have competed. It's also implied that Shang Tsung has a history of cheating and taking out fighters early when he talks about "leaving nothing to chance". I think the subtext here is that Shang Tsung has cheated in at least some of the prior tournaments, by taking out fighters before the actual tournament.

average : jax, liu kang, sonya, kabal
trash : that useless new character cole something
the others? can't even feels the presence, i hope WB will improve in the sequel

the quick cutting during fights was super sad to see.Joe Taslim is an amazing martial artist It feels like they butchering his talent.we've had so many movies and TV shows now with fight scenes that are shown very cleanly and clearly, it sucks this one relied on a lot of quick cuts. I assume it's partly because this was a first time director, and then partly because only 3 of the actors or so have martial arts backgrounds

I liked the movie. The movie is a 50 / 50 movie. Eather you like it or not. For me it was an entertaining movie. I understand people who don't like it. Sorry to hear you guys didn't liked it. Know what's even worse? The writers....Greg Russo I believe his name is, this was his legit first film, and the other writer...he was the writer for Wonder Woman 1984....That explains why the movie was bad....They just had really bad writing.

At first i watch the movie, i stop in the middle of the movie and leave it. I really disapointed. And then i found this video of yours, i come back to watch it, coz i dont want to be spoiled.
But again when i watch it again, trough out all the way of the movie, i cant stop saying "Why you do this to me" and "Why you ruins my child hood memories". "WHY ?!"

This movie is a shame for all of the actors/actrees, this movie give a bad record on their job history.
And if i have to rate it, ill give 2 star at least. 1 star for the opening fight, and the other for the end fight scene, thats all

I wanted to like this movie but it was a let down and had a hard time finishing it. This was more of a prequel to a tournament. The first 7 minutes was the best part. I wanted more kung fu action but at least Shang Chi is coming soon.
With all this films minor flaws, it’s still far better than annihilation. I found enjoyment out of it and that was really all I wanted. Does it have issues? Yes. Can they be fixed? Definitely.
Yea but you should want more from the movie so that they could actually build a cinematic universe out of it. If you knew nothing about Mortal Kombat and you seen this movie, you would never go see another one.

I do appreciate the honesty. I had fun watching this, but my hope is that with this being a so called prequel we get so much more in the next movies. Yes it was better than annihilation but come on Hollywood if we can do awesome shit with a Godzilla movie like we saw in GvK we can definitely do a MK movie right. Just after Lady Phatblood did the "I learned to control it" line the guy with the hammer started doing the Mortal Kombat theme by tapping his hammer on the wall and it looked like she heard him because she was fighting a smile there. THAT'S a construction dude I want working on my house.

Y’all said it best no doubt. For me it was also the fact that the locations (I.e outworld) were as bland as possible.. I also couldn’t stand the Uber cheesy one liners (I.e flawless victory, or worse of all.. I’m no longer Bi-Han.. Call me Sub-Zero like WHYYYY!?!).. also the fact that everything felt rushed. Even though the first ten minutes were great it felt rushed. When Scorpion shouts out “BI-HAN!” I was thinking like “if I didn’t know Mortal Kombat lore, would I understand how he knew it was Bi-Han?” Or “if I wasn’t deep into Mortal Kombat, would I understand why Bi-Han said “for the Lin Kuei”?” See Because they never went into their history, there rivalry felt ... flat! Even at the end, why in the fuck would Scorpion need ANY help with Sub-Zero?
I wish Shang Tsung would've taken Cole Young's soul instead of Kung Lao's......🤬

I loved the film being a big mortal kombat fan but I understand & agree with some of the issues you guys had with the film. I wish they used Cole’s character a bit better and it feels like they cut a lot out of the film but I was very entertained throughout. Loved the review I personally give it an 8/10 and I think with the introduction of Johnny Cage in the sequel and some tweaks with the characters will make the film better. Great jump of point and I agree that it has potential to be a glorious franchise.
I’d give it a 6 out of 10.
The two actors that played Raiden and Shang Tsung didn’t give off the scary and powerful feeling the other 2 actors had in the 95 version. Very disappointed

Coles power was literally plot armor
I really enjoyed it for what the movie is. I can understand the hate on Cole and for me I didnt like the character that much either. There was so much nostalgic easter eggs (ex. liu kang sweep spam) Actors did confirm that WB cut some fights which may have led to some bad fight sequences. I cant blame the director when WB kind of fks it up. Im just excited for what comes next!
I enjoyed the film but the fights let me down sadly. The only fight I really enjoyed was Hanzo fighting the Lin Kuei ninja. They underutilised the 3 actors who can fight and do action and it felt stiff and janky. Just my opinion. Still made me smile the jokes here and there . Could do a lot better but still a okay film. I would have really liked if Gareth Evans had a shot of directing a Mortal Kombat film. Plus I am not sure if you guys were aware of it but WB shoe horned Cole into the film well allegedly shoe horned him in.
After that great trailer I wanna cry after seeing the movie smh...Ladyblood please go in like you do

I loved the movie, it was good. I like Cole and how he could evolve in future sequels. The action was good, humor was good, fights were entertaining. I also liked the ending of the movie and how it gives off who will be in the next movie.
I would give this movie a solid : 8.5/10

If by "in the first movie there's a build-up to Outworld" you mean they babble about it endlessly and spend most of the movie on an Earthrealm island that looks like an expensive theme vacation (like an ancient Sandals Resort) and see a single stretch of road in Outworld by the end of the movie that for no reason leads straight to the Emperor's temple (complete with no Shao Kahn in it), and it really looks no different than the other island but now it's dark, then yes, we build up to Outworld in the 1995 film.

I was disappointed there was no tournament. I wanted more back story on subzero and scorpion rivalry in addition to the opening. Did subzero always work for Shang Tsung? How did kabal end up working for Shang Tsung? I have not watched the entire video lol
you do realize every single incarnation of raiden says he cant involve himself in conflicts with mortals he can gather fighters but he cant fight himself since he is an elder god same reason shao kahn doesnt fight in the tournaments
I had a good time with the film but yeah, needs quite a bit of improvement. I do genuinely want a sequel that’s the actual tournament and hopefully learns from both the good and the bad in this film because there is a lot of potential here. Also, I think I heard something about a lot of the film being cut out, so maybe an extended cut if it’s truly warranted.

The scene of Liu Keng attending to Cole Young's wound.. I was like, why?🥴... Couldn't those magical monks attend to his wound and just have Lu Keng stand on the side "like a bad ass he supposed to be" and explain his "origin" of where he came from. Secondly, the ending. I would've been happy, with subzero freezing cole with his family and Scorpion coming to save them.... So we get some bad ass fighting between the 2 iconic characters and thereafter scorpion telling Cole. Keep my bloodline alive after freeing him (you know, Salvage something atleast).....my honest opinion, I'm not sure if I can watch this movie twice... I apologize 🤦♂️😅

While I didn't have as much problem with the movie as y'all did I totally get what you're saying. My biggest issue was that they basically crapped all over Prince Goro by only having him there to unlock Generic's shamrock thing. One of the most bad ass characters in the history of MK and that's all you have him do? Btw, the power absorbing part of Generic's whatchamacallit armor only worked during the Goro fight up until he used the uppercut and manifested his nightstick weapons. After that the power absorption effect (the firey glowy thing that happened when Goro hit him) never happened again and the armor acted like regular armor.
Speaking of the nightstick weapons, we all know that this was Stryker's weapons in the game. So, why the fuck did you essentially make your character, that no one was going to give a damn about anyways, after one of, if not the, most hated characters in the entire history of MK?! I swear all they were trying to do was get Stryker in the movie with this Cole character!

I thought the movie was good for what it is. More my thing is the editing. Its just a little too choppy/ fast cuts for me. Love the first 7 mins is great but once joe and Hiroyuki start to go at it u can tell that the Director and editor first time shooting real Martial artist. Idk maybe I am worng here. I guess I have just been spoiled with director's like Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto or even the director from John wick that u let the marshal artist apply there craft u take a step back. But that comes with hollywood.
I was with Lady Phatblood in the Trailer reaction I hate when a trailer is really well cut together you get hyped for the movie and you go into the theatre(coz there is no covid in Australia) and get a mediocre movie at best. I get why they put Cole in the movie but for me it took something away from the mythos of the Mortal Kombat universe. I like you guys were hoping that Cole was just going be this side character the gave audiences a segue into the world and the other staple characters. I just hope if there is a sequel James Wan takes control of the property he has and directs it himself with a script that isn't and insult to fans of the franchise which in my opinion this movie was. For all the flaws of Annihilation the one thing that movie did right was followed the premise of what mortal kombat is even tho the script was garbage.

I was looking through youtube to find honest reactions to this movie after watching it, then *BAM* I find this hidden piece of gold. Phat Samurai-san your description of Liu Kang character had me dying laughing till my gut hurts.Liu Kang is one of my favorite characters to play in the MK franchise of games and in the other movies, but here his performace lines were so cringe worthy that i was like WTF is this. I felt that they did him dirty in this film, and I just couldnt get on board with Cole as the main character. I agree with your honest breakdown, but even with its flaws, I stlll found it an entertaining watch. if i was to give it a film school rating it will probably be a B+ to an A-. I like the reaction alot from both of you, and you've managed to recriut a new follower to your Dojo.

My final thoughts. They should focus on the characters development. For example we can see, Cole looks like a person who got no clue of what to do next, confused and out of place. He has no charisma, no persona just a generic character that I don't give a f***. And I don't care if he doesn't show up in the future sequel. The fight choreography is not interesting. They should learn from movies like Ong Bak, The Raid, John Wick 1, The night comes for us (Joe Taslim who played Sub Zero is in this movie as the protagonist)I will guarantee Mortal kombat will be awesome!
Just watched the movie and felt kinda weird, I wasn’t sure... But then I watched y’all’s review and yes this movie was pretty underwhelming for all the hype.
It wasn't even hot garbage....it was room temperature.
Guess we have to wait for another 10-15 years to watch a decent mortal kombat movie 😭
