- It was November 1945 in Moscow. The war had ended just a few months before. 29 year old Yehudi Menuhin came to Russia right after WWII to play in his parents' country of birth. The posters appeared: violinist Yehudi Menuhin is going to play three concerts, two solo recitals (with pianists Lev Oborin in Sonatas by Franck and Debussy, and Abraham Makarov accompanying ) and one with orchestra performing three concertos: Bach in D minor for two violins with David Oistrakh, Beethoven and Brahms, all with Alexander Orlov conducting. All income from these concerts would benefit wounded soldiers of the Red Army.
At this time I was a student at the Music School of the Moscow Conservatory. The rumors that this great American violinist, whose parents had been from Russia, was now coming to Moscow, excited the Soviet musical establishment to the point of frenzy. Once the concert was announced, tickets were out of reach for ordinary Soviet citizens. In fact, Professor Alexander Feodorovich Goedike, a famous organist and composer with whom I studied chamber music, once told me: "My dear, all the tickets have been sent to the Kremlin Communists". What to do? And so, my friend and classmate Lelik Zisman, also a violinist (as matter of fact, he was from Odessa) and I decided to ask the Director of the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory Yefim Borisovich Galanter for tickets. We went to his office and Lelik with tears in his eyes said: "We are students of Professors Zeitlin and Yampolsky (the most important violin teachers in USSR), please, help us!" --"Nothing left"-said Yefim Borisovich, but as though sensing the desperation of two poor Jewish boys, and perhaps recalling his own childhood, he took a piece of paper and wrote, "Let two pass," and signed. That evening we heard this famous recital, which fortunately was recorded, and now you can hear the same on our "time machine"!

How wonderful to have this historic recording of my father Yehudi . Thank you !
Dear Zamira Benthall I thank you for your words in the BBC film at the end: "I remember him as a light- a shining light, so I think he is still around somehow"..this was deeply moving and I think this is real! This Moscow-concert of your father I hear it again and again..(and the Beethoven concert..)(sorry for my english, I am swiss) All the best for youHeidi Böll Haas

Zamira Benthall He was such a wonderful humanitarian and never once blamed an entire people for the despicable acts of their greedy leaders. He was one of only a few who chose to perform in the demonized (by the Tavistock institute and the Zionist propaganda machine)country of Germany. I feel myself privilege to have heard him in Houston, TX and in Germany. The people of Russia and Germany too felt this privilege I am certain
Why do you feel compelled to inject political narishkeit and your own bias into a beautiful discussion about Menuhin's artistry? And where is your sensitivity to the victims of the Shoah who survived and emigrated to Israel? Lord Menuhin's artistry and musicianship transcended the political divides and wounds after the war. Enough said.
To my ears one of the greatest concerts in the 20th century.
Your personal story around this concert is moving! This makes the excitement of the audience palpable. This is what makes RUclips different from just a collection of recordings. And BTW, the drawings, your picture in uniform and everything untold about them makes your personal story as moving as the concert itself.
Menuhin at his best - playing the music from the inside out - proof that he was as great as they say. Hoomeyow!!
A master, bravo one thousand times!
What an experience!
Played with wild abandon, but even so, the smallest subtleties are nuanced and expressed.
The Russian audience knows every piece, applauding well before he finishes...
Es el mas bello que conozco 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌟🌟🌟🌟
Yuri... ... I never knew this existed... as a Yehudi fan... thank you
I have never before heard such great playing from Mr. Menuhin after WWII. This is all just SENSATIONAL! Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us.

As a Collector and a admire of Yehudi Menuhin and I've been Collecting his Records for 40 Years both on 78rpm and LP Vinyl and a Recording of this Work by Saint Sans was Made in 1957 and(P1958)on His Master's Voice and Coupled with his Recording of Lalo Symphony Espagnole ASD 290 which is the third of three Recordings of the Score the first and arguably the best one with George's Enesco and was Made in 1933 with the Paris Symphony Orchestra and the Second one with the Concert Cologne Orchestra Conducted by Jean Fournett in 1947 and last one with the Philharmonia Orchestra Conducted by Sir Eugene Goosons and if any of the Utube audiences are interested they are all on HMV
America in the 1920's produced a generation of superheroes. They did impossible things: Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Rudolph Valentino, and in classical music it was Yehudi, who played the Beethoven Violin Concerto in Carnegie Hall as a mature artist....at the age of 10 (or was it 12?). Given the huge demands of a career at a time when he should gave been growing up, it's amazing that he remainfd relatively whole for the duration. Part of his talent consistef in an enormous inner strenghth. We shall not see the likes of him again!
Hermoso.
What a story!
Merveilleux ,

Pour toujours dans nos coeurs, il nous a tant donné...
I always have this cd with me, but i lost it!! So thank you for uploading. I would like to add that I have also the onether cd with Beethoven, and bach second concerti. I Uploaded the later here at my Channel. However, I have not find his Brahms, so if you can upload it it w'll be wonderful. TY

incredible document.what an artist. I ask: at that time Menuhin for russian musician was at the same level of Heifetz or no? In 1945 Oistrach was not famous in the west? He won Reina Elisabeth after that time.To me young Menuhin is the best.He touch my heart.Thank you, also for your anecdote
