The only reason the GDP has grown is because the population has grown, in real terms the economy has shrunk. 10m people no longer bothering to go to work because wages are lower now (in real terms) than they were in 2008, added to which housing and transport costs have rocketted, making work simply uneconomical.

Under-investment in skills by governments and industries has been going on for decades. I have worked with the UK apprenticeships programmes for the last thirty years, and with the exception of a small number of organisations, most employers either do not have a skills strategy, or do not want to invest in their own workforce. Business seems to be just focused on short-term profit and shareholder dividends rather than increasing skills and investing in modern methods of production. The result is that the UK's productivity has diminished when compared to our competitors, and the skills gap has increased. We are heading for a low-skill, low productivity future.

The British people 100% should be given a referendum. The option question should be, should foreign born citizens or citizens with duel nationality be stripped of their British citizenship if convicted of a criminal offence or if they spend more than 1 year in receipt of welfare. Add in a secondary question on should foreign born citizens be disallowed form receiving social housing and not only would undesirable immigration stop in its tracks but there would be an exodus.

gov needs to do a degree check on firms and make them justify if the degree is necessary or whether they might train a Brit who wants to change career to do the job. Otherwise obviously , the degree just gums up social mobility and skills development.. because a guy in his late 20's 30's or 40's .. or even 50's plus perhaps (retirement is 70 after all).. looking to better themselves cannot just go back to uni ; they could get a trainee post and take a temp salary cut though and then all of a sudden you have more skilled people in the economy... more productivity and better motivated workforce.

A lot of jobs can be learnt in a week, there's too many qualification barriers on so called skilled jobs which aren't that skilled at all really.
Why do you need a degree to be a glorified data entry clerk.

@@Foxingban what I dont understand are jobs that say you need a degree and a professional qualification on top.. but you need the degree to do the professional qualification.. but the degree can be in anything really.. just so long as you have the degree.

Part of the problem was Tony Blair getting everyone to university. What happend to technical and manufacturing jobs? What is the opportunity cost, i.e. the engineers and technicians we have lost for a generation because of the university model.
We were the country that exported railways to the world could we even do that today?
We are under the spell of low growth model of the WEF i.e. low growth and low consumption. The aim is low consumption, this is at the cost of sacrificing the production capacity.
