Loved this review. I had a 1978 Toyota Truck that, aside from being blue and the short bed, was almost identical to this. It was given the affectionate name of "Ghetto Truck" Bought it for $300 in 2002 to learn manual on and ultimately be a commuter until 2006 when I bought a more efficient beater. Zack hit all the right notes on this. It was crude, it was loud, it smelt, and it wasn't comfortable. But it had so much charm. I ended doing some long trips in it and loved the drives because of the character. I miss the truck dearly but wouldn't be surprised if it were still out there running around
I’d say the 2000s-2010s Yotas have more character than the new ones, but to me peak Yota was the late 1980s to mid 1990s. Stellar build quality and durability, handsome understated looks, and absolute reliability. Everything from the Corolla to Cressida/Avalon, and the, well, “Truck” lol (Hilux) to 4Runner, everything they made was damn near perfect to me
Hilux in Australia. SR5 is an option pack. No idea what the options in such a basic ute were though ! But super reliable with regular maintainance. Now a collector/resto. 👍👍🇦🇺
I want one. You never see these on the road and the color is perfect. Everyone wants the 80s trucks but the 70s trucks are forgotten. I like the styling and the quad headlights even if it looks Datsun-ish. The old-school Japanese bed with external tie-downs is cool. I like these simple old trucks. They were built to work and run forever, not cruise to Starbucks. A 5-speed was pretty spicy for 1976 but this was right after the first gas crisis where big V8 trucks suddenly weren't cool. I wish you'd parked this next to a modern truck. Not necessarily an F-150, even a new Tacoma would show how big trucks have gotten.
My first pick up was a 77 Yellow. 4 speed. Great little truck , what made this truck peppy was the 4.10 rear end. My main complaint was the single wall truck bed, became a rust bucket also don't drive it into a concrete bridge like I did. Was lucky didn't get hurt too bad lol😊
My first vehicle! Owned one of these from '86 until around '91 when we collided with a deer and rolled it onto the passenger side 😢 and it was just not worth fixing at that point. Fun little truck with the 20R engine!
We had one in our family. The thing even drove home after being flipped on its top. That was the end of the truck, but it served a long 13 years before that incident.
OMG I absolutely love the Toyota Trucks from the 70s and 80s. I want a 4×4 so bad, I had an 89 which was awesome but it was like the very first of the 90s trucks and it was an automatic so a big fat "plays the big freakin bottle fail music", yeah automatics and 4 bangers SUCK!
That truck is COOL! I owned a 81 SR5 w/a 22R engine? Mine was a 4x4. I owned SEVERAL used Toyotas aftr that with crank windows, u know, basic, BUT I LOVED THEM! Only complain was rust. That truck lacks that! 👍✊🖖🇺🇸
What youre driving Zack, you're a very lucky man to be driving and experiencing! The 1st gen Toyota pickup, they came in 4wd, or 2wd, they had a 20r, a 5 speed, and they were so tough it's not even funny. You could load that bed up with a decent sized pallet of roof shingles, or a small bucket of gravel, if you got factory upgraded rear leaf springs you could loud up that bed even more. The trucks with the upgraded leafs were actual called "the one ton package" because that little truck could be loaded up with as much weight as an actual 1 ton pickup truck of the era. They were amazing work trucks, if you worked hard, this truck would work harder then you! Sadly they rusted out, however the 2nd gen pickups are just as great, the 3rd gens as long as they had the 4 cylinder was still a great truck. The 1st and 2nd gen 4runners were amazing vehicles. These days, you're lucky if you get to experience a well cared for version of an old Yota like this one here!
holy shit he finally reviews a vehicle that I own. Of course mine isn't as nice, seeing how as the previous owner de-converted it from a Chinook camper to a truck without a bed. All the beds at the junkyard were completely rusted through it's not my fault! It may not look like much, but that 20R is one of the most reliable engines I've ever seen. The only things I've ever had to replace was the starter and the battery. It is unfortunately to this day, the most reliable vehicle I own
I think its eh... Like the elephant joke... "its nice to look at one at the zoo, but you wouldn't want to have one in your own house"... Its theoretical concept that older is better and more reliable etc, but at the end of things... No its not... Who cares if the car can be fixed with a hammer and a screwdriver if you can die in it either from cold or a heat stroke or any accident gets you injured or dead...? Its really a weird approach that i can sort of get when its coming from older more conservative and technophobe kind of people, but why is this starting to come out of the younger generations? Like hand on heart Zack, would you want to drive this thing daily and use it in everyday chores, instead of your lets say Mazda 3 or a modern Hilux lets say? Yes the ol girl may be cool (i dont think it is, but i understand people who think that it is) and it may be nostalgic and stuff but its completely impractical in todays times... As most of those simple old hammer and screwdriver kind of cars...
lol that's such an exaggaration. the 96hp is just fine. I drove my licence in a 79hp 1850kg (4400lbs) diesel Toyota Hiace van. even that was adequate. slow but not painful.
Are you serious? Manual transmissions should be in every vehicle and most pickups benefit from them the most, especially an older one like this which would be gutless with an automatic. With a 5 speed you could cruise a 70s pickup at 90 while an asthmatic auto would be painful over 65.
you may not like it but when your automatic POS 4L60e shits out on you and starts slipping, guess who'll be waving as they pass you by on the side of the road? A 50 year old truck with 4 on the floor
Some people enjoy rowing their own gears. Trucks used to be simple and basic and built to be reliable. This isn't a pavement princess truck for driving to Starbucks at the mall with a pristine bed.
Loved this review.

Toyota's in the 2000s and 2010s were boring and lacked personality. The only reason they were popular is because of their reliablity
Once they axed the mr2 and Celica it was all downhill

@@dragon81heart yes Toyotas were very well built
They probably have misleading engine names to pay lower tax by displacement in Japan. I'm assuming.
@@dragon81heart Peak Toyota for me is 70s and 80s.
1. I wish a single cab successor was still made.
2. It’s missing the flag of chad and .50 cal
It is in every country basically besides the USA and Canada. It is called the Hilux.
Hilux in Australia. SR5 is an option pack. No idea what the options in such a basic ute were though ! But super reliable with regular maintainance. Now a collector/resto. 👍👍🇦🇺
Thank you bubbly, you are the man !! This little truck is so amazing one of the kind

How badly do you want one? Cause I am selling my 1978 toyota Long bed in NY
I still own a 76 only it has a fiberglass camper body.
Love this truck, I had a 1994 Toyota Celica GTS notch back with a 22RE engine, yes it was a 2.4lt..
Interesting how even back then there was an SR5 trim.
1:15 My dude....its to help us with lower insurance rates, calm down... Toyota was doing people a solid
My grandfather had one of these. He mounted 2 bench seats in the bed to carry the grandkids around. Good times lol.
What a cool old truck. Reminds me of a truck my twin brother used to have; his was a 1976 Datsun, it was the same color!
It is so cool to see SR5 on this classic truck!
Thank you for bringing back the memory of the 18R engine which was equipped in my dad's 1979 Cressida with a manual transmission.
We had an after market AC that was mounted under the glove box. And it had an AM radio.

5 speed manual in ‘76. Didn’t see that too often especially in a truck. Most trucks still had a 4 speed or even an old “3 on the tree”
@Brian Lee Say what

18 RC in my 1974

I wonder how different it would have been without the header and aftermarket carb? 96 HP stock - as equipped 110 HP?
I have two 78s sitting in the driveway one automatic one manual and has ac! Hard to find parts tho but love them non the less
What a neat truck
Another great review, Zach.. this one is definitely a survivor as even here on the west coast of the US, they are all rotten and rusted out..😁👍
The same engine we had on Toyota cresida for the time nd to this day we have those as workhorse here in South Africa 🇿🇦
My dad bought one of these in the early 2000s as an extra car hahaha. Very zippy and fun to ride in
i love my old s10 is she perfect no does she have personality hell yeah. even with the rust i still love her.
do a lexus gx470
nice tacoma. those trucks keep on going. i like the big friggin bottle test.
The Toyota 20R engine was also used in the Corona sedan
That's rare❤ from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Your video bounces
Toyota pick up
Astonishing.
Cool 🥰
That truck is nothing short of GROOVY!!! And I'm in love with them wheels.

You got that NPC energy. 😂 Buy a manual transmission and have fun, or just go buy an EV.
