Farvann You can always bend a note up in pitch without a trem. However you can't bend a note down in pitch without one. It's a pretty cool effect diving a note with no trem you have to detune at the tuning peg.
Pick what you like, but I like these features for Black Metal: ~Thinner neck profiles make sliding chords (like in Freezing Moon riff or Thorns riffs) and weird chord shapes easier ~High output pickups sound the best imo (Dimarzio Distortion DP100, Seymour Duncan SH-6) ~Trem bridge and Neck pickup are totally optional, usually just unnecessary or time-consuming (only if you want to solo); you can do almost everything on a fixed bridge and its half as much work as a floating trem ~Thin string gauge (9-42) will help with playability - can take advantage of this since you're generally tuning higher (E standard) for Black Metal ~Locking tuners save you time
It was your vid that helped then 57 year old, now 58, choose a guitar as an absolute beginner. Thank you. I enjoy your vids and seeing you progress in your music is great.
to have a nice black metal sound 1st make sure you can play your guitar since some are very uncomfortable... 2nd a good distortion/overdrive pedal that you like AND MORE IMPORTANTLY!!! remember to add a touch of reverb! even if you don't actually hear the reverb you can make it sound huge with like 1% of reverb! unlike OTHER metal, the AMP does not matter AS MUCH but kind of do... black metal suffer less of "sound snob" mentality so... remember "a touch of reverb" ;P
Dude, that's the exact guitar I've been looking as my next guitar too, couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it in the video! I think it's a very versatile guitar, it has a nice pick-up switch configuration.
Strangely, I have fallen in love with the Jim Root Jazzmaster and the Jim Root Tele. Both are from Fender. I love the necks, the body and the sound of the guitars. Say whatever that they are the signature models of a guy from slipknot. But I was at a guitar shop and played both of them. I fell head over heels with these guitars and purchased them both. I got rid of my Ibanez guitars, my LTD guitar and a Jackson after I got the Jim Roots. Wouldn’t change that decision one bit. The guitars I sold helped me pay for one guitar and had to do a shit load of side jobs to buy the other. But I got it done.
I do see alot of people complaining about sablast not being right about him liking V-shaped guitars to play sitting i love V guitars ( either sitting or standing ) but i definitly understand why someone wouldnt like playing like that
it's not that i do not like them. the thing is if i would buy that guitar it would only be for looks. i've tried sitting with that guitar and it's not that uncomfortable... but i prefer a standard shape. the thing is that i have a bass with horns and the top of the horns somehow always get damaged :P
And that's where you're wrong, Sablast! Rhoads-type V's are really comfortable (you have to put your right leg between the wings and you're almost automatically assuming a classical and comfortable position! More importantly; thank you for telling us about Old Night, really enjoying what I've heard so far!
i tried both Vs and RR types and i have to say i prefer the standard guitar while sitting. the thing is that i would place those guitars when i listen to the thing i recorded somewhere near me and 10% of time the guitar would crash somewhere (yeah i'm clumsy). my bass with horns has more tape on the horns than the actuall wood. And mostly when i see guitarists with V guitars there is some kind of damaging on the top of the horns.
Yeah, comfort is quite personal. The most comfortable guitars for me a RRs and Strats (the latter in combination with a foot-stool, though, when sitting). Glad you like your new guitar, hope it will serve you well!
I actually have only 1 pickup on my guitar. And it's weird bridge one. Also a built in distortion and minijack output. So i guess i'm set. I can play into cheap stereo speakers and be trve af. Nice guitar btw. Cheers from russia :3
It's a common misconception that V-shaped guitars are uncomfortable to play. You just have to play with the academic position, instead of setting the guitar on your right leg, which is bad for your back anyway. My LTD Arrow 401 would be perfect for you, but it has a Floyd Rose. I don't understand the hate against Floyds, at least proper ones stay in tune, and you can always use a tremol-no system. The only complaints I have against it are: the neck is a bit thicker than my Ibanez and BC Riches, and I'd prefer splittable humbuckers, which can always be arranged, because I don't ONLY play TRVE KVLT. I bought it used for cheap, so I don't really know how they originally were, but the frets are very smooth and it makes playing great, get yourself a fret polishing kit if you get the opportunity ;) On a side note, Irongear pickups are GREAT and extremely cheap, do not hesitate to buy some if you need to change yours.
CyberChrist Indeed. The classical posture is better ergonomically both for your back and for your fretting hand wrist. And V-Shapes are good for that posture. X-Shapes like Jackson Warrior, BC Rich Stealth or Dean ML are even better because with them you dont need anything to elevate your left leg to raise the neck to correct angle. Well, you can always lift with your foot but that can lead to tension on longer playing sessions. Screw the Floyd/Trem though. Unless you ABSOLUTELY need it (ie you are a shredding lead guitarist) then having it offers no good sides. It just makes basic guitar mainteance a hassle.
I think tremolo guitarists are a completely different breed to solid tailers. I have both and personally prefer a floating trem, you get some scary fucking sounds when doing black metal.
Im looking for a guitar that has a good clear sound but also sounds descent distorted . Prs guitars seem to do the job ....then again theres Esp's black metal series , beautiful and desinded purely for Black Metal (and on my budget) . Any sudgestions ?
Prs guitars all day! When played with distortion chords ring clear with every note..... arrpegiated chords sound very clear as well..... Can't go wrong with PRS!
yes, you can use anything for black metal. jacksons aren't very gritty though so I'd ease back on the tone knob to get more dirt. Jackson's are made for metal anyway so they'll work just fine. An esp will have more grit which is better for black metal but you could literally use any cheap guitar for black metal.
Brat hrvat, pozdrav od bosanca, imam blackened death bend u razvoju, svidja mi se kako pokazujes da je black metal odlican zanr, i da je veoma muzikalan i instrumentalan zanr, zbog tebe sam zavolio black metal. \m/
I see Herman Li do amazing things with his Ibanez. But besides that, I read that you have to be careful of the "neck" dive. If kts too heavy you don't want it. I also want a flat radius. And it looks like Ibanez has that. Plus the humbuckers. Someone said to make sure that it has an HSS...Humbucker..whatever. So basically what I'm saying is, huge fan of Ghost, J-Rock because they kill it. And I love black/deathmetal. BluTengel and Erdling are also killer. So I am on the search! Also need to know what amp to get. Thanks! New Sub!
From my personal experience, here's my 2 cents: - Jackson guitars are great if you want to go thrash, but it's a soloist guitar, don't use it if you plan to have just a guitar in your band. - Ibanez guitars are great for shreds and their noisier sound fills better if your BM band has 1 guitar only. - BC Rich are good rhythm guitars. I wouldn't use them for solos, unlike Kerry King - Gibson: good guitars, but I know plenty of guys using a Gibson and got wrist ache 'cause they are heavy. - Dean: I've been told several times that only the Dimebag Series are good. - Fender: Everybody seems to use them now, maybe it's because they excel in arpeggios, but I don't like them. They are not meant to play black metal and you have to re-tune them after 1-2 songs. - ESP/LTD: I'm not a fan, to be honest. - Scheckter: Use them for "core" music, or doom, but not Black Metal: they are focused on lo-tunes.
@@nuts1790 Play them and have your opinion. I say: use a jackson for lead guitars if you have two in your band. If not, go with Ibanez or BC Rich. Mostly though it depends by what style you'll play and what pedals you use.
@@Snarl616 I wanna play black metal and Ik for that I don't really need a good guitar since the quality most of the time sounds like shit lol but it's gonna be my first guitar n I want it to be special you know? I have hard time choosing I was thinking either Les Paul or jackson
@@nuts1790 You don't have to sound like shit to play black metal. That's an old common place. My suggestion? Ask to try some guitars and play the "Transylvanian hunger" main riff with half the gain. The guitar that allows you to play it better is the guitar for you. I'd suggest you to spend 400€ for an Ibanez RG or a BC Rich Platinum or Bronze Series. Those will be good rhythm guitar. You can choose to focus on a lead guitar later.
Sometimes a single coil in the neck position can be a great source for that icy, sharp tremolopicking tone. Traditionally a humbucker is great for metal because it sounds big, but single coils are perfectly viable as well.
doesnt matter as long as the guitar has the same specs as other popular black metal guitarists use and does sound the same way. individuality is a big no no in black metal guitar tone
Nice video. The only point I am dissagree is the colour - for me red one is ok, if it works good. And tremolo unit - man, this is ONLY a part of your destiny. I have one with FR whammy bar, but this is the only one, thats good. Secondary, maybe even Squier will satisfy you with normal setup and good pedal. Superstrats are very sexy, but LesPaul can be really good support for blacker. ESP you will not like it. Ibanezists are NOT with ESP. But Ibanez like yours is very very nice. The Varg reference though

Me neither :p

Perhaps not, but he uses it in every (?) video in similar manner (in the intro of the video). I instantly though of Varg too at 0:35

-"I guitar want to buy for black metal"
-"WTF?!"
Hahahahahaha
I also hate the tremolo thing. Just annoying. I'm playing Black Metal, not Power Metal
You are a fucking legend Farvann... Pardon my french
haha :D
I second this. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist than some lead guitarist.

I was in a black metal band for a small period of time. I used my Les Paul. As long as it's got very powerful pickups, it will work.
Hahahahaha, nice Varg reference. Greetings from Mexico
as always nice video man, ill get my guitar someday and form my trve kvlt band, keep the good stuff

You could pick a fender Squire and churn out great black metal... The power comes from within, the guitar is just a tool ~
in the end the only thing you actually said about picking a guitar for black metal is that it should be black
