    This is the final Double Dragon game in the trilogy (not including the SNES version of Super Double Dragon or the Neo Geo version of Double Dragon). Billy and Jimmy Lee returned home after defeating the Black Warriors to avenge Marions death. Now they are on a new adventure from the so-called fortune teller. She tells them the legend of the three rosetta stones needed to recover and tells them to go to Egypt to see how the stones can help them. This game features a shop where the Lee brother can purchase weapons, power-ups, extra buddies to help you when you die, energy, and extra lives to help with with the fortune teller's quest. The power-ups make Billy and Jimmy twice their size and giving them more damage to the enemies and longer range of attacks. In Double Dragon 3, the games graphics departs from the cartoon like style and moving towards the more realistic looking characters. In my opinino, this game was not too bad but not as good as the first two Double Dragon games. The ability to throw objects like the knives and picking up heavy objects and throw and dump them on your enemies have been removed. This time the game costs you real money to purchase items from the shop making this game a coin sucker. The graphics are good but I didn't like the story as much as the first two games. The NES version of DD3 was better. This game is a little harder than the first two games. Even when the difficulty is set on easy and the maximum amount of energy each characters can carry, I do die quite a bit on the later stages especially the Samurai and the Knight bosses which I have to press 5 on my keyboard to inseart coin. The best weapon in this game in my opinion is the Nunchucks. The sword was alright but not that useful. The sword was a much better weapon against the Knight bosses or the samurai. But I died so quick I no longer had access to the sword when I had to use other guys bought from the shop which I didn't think it was a good idea. Not totally a bad game but not that great. The game is still fun and enjoybale to play. -

    I think a lot of games of this era bit off more than they could chew. A lot of playability was sacrificed for an attempt at better graphics and animation. Games were dumbed down, ending up with ridiculously hard games, where you could only pay to win. Completing DD3 on one credit would be nearly impossible, I think.
    However, the game deserves credit for trying to reach beyond its comfort zone. For me Double Dragon (1) is the best DD game. Its graphics stand back a lot from today's standards, but so do those of DD3. DD1 remains sharp and playable, I think, while DD3 is more of a failed experiment.
    Back then just the addition of speech simulation and pixel graphics was a major plus, but judging by today's standards, such features fail to impress anyone.

      There was a wrestling arcade game that had a similar set up only instead of buying moves etc while in the middle of a match Hulk Hogan's face would appear with the message "Insert coins to regain power". So basically it was making you pay for extra energy.

    • @Mazryonh
      @Mazryonh 7 лет назад +2

      Or they made it so that you can regain energy in game, but only very slowly, while making you lose a lot of energy over time. This happened in arcade games like the original Gauntlet or Rampage World Tour, which were both arcade games by Midway Entertainment. It gives you the illusion that you can heal up easily, but not effectively, so as to keep eating your coins/tokens.

    • @GaryBeltz

    NES version of "Double Dragon 3" was completely different than Arcade Version. Story was about of kidnapping of Lee brothers' girlfriend Marion. Billy and Jimmy went to journey around the world to recover her. They doesn't fight with Hiruko, and she died how her body was reduced into dust. Marion was final boss, and was transformed by evil spell into princess Noiram. In final stage you are in the chamber with three sacrophages. Inside each is mummy. First you must kill mummy from left sacrophage, next from right sarcophage and finally from middle. During fight with third mummy, her bandages burned off and revealed her true form: Marion AKA Princess Noiram.

  • @ThisIsEvilman
    @ThisIsEvilman 6 лет назад +11

    Many things can be said about this game, but one in particular remains a mystery for me: the animation is SO choppy when on fixed screens, but why is it so smooth during transitions ( when you make the screen scrolling / go to next portion of the level) ? There's litterally no logic, it should be the opposite in most games, not this one. Why ? Any reason for this ?

    • @RaposaCadela
      @RaposaCadela 6 лет назад +5

      I honestly don't know. My only guess is that the programmers only figured out how to move sprites through re-drawing graphical-tiles, and not make frames, or actual movement, between them. And that would still be the case while the screen scrolls, but you stay on the same location on the screen as it does, so it looks smooth? I really don't know, but it just shows how unprofessional this game is. What were Technos thinking when they decided to give their most succeful franchise to a third-party developer to make?

    I love DD3... not for what is it, but what it wanted to be. The concept is great, the globe trotter indiana jones adventure with new buddies beat em up entering the magical realm like a cheap cool B Kung Fu movie. Running clothesline, rebounding from the wall flying kicks, overhead throwing and special 2 player techniques are cool ideas. The music is the best from the arcade series. For me, the problems are the gameplay and the animation. I would have preferred a smaller version of the sprites of the previous DD arcade games, with their physics and playability with the same style new enemies.

    For me not only the NES version is better, but I also found all the 3 double dragons on NES much better games, not because the graphics, which indeed are much better in the arcade, but because the overall speed and playability of the games. I tried to play the 3 games with MAME and all the 3 were so terribly boring (being the first one the best), they get very slow a lot of times, I finished the first one, played some of the others but I deleted them after a while. I must say that usually, almost every arcade game is superior than a a console port, but Double Dragon is one of the few examples in which the ports are much better than the originals. That's just my opinion.

    • @Rangaisia
      @Rangaisia 5 лет назад +6

      The first NES Double Dragon was blatantly inferior to the arcade game, with mediocre presentation, slow gameplay, clunky controls, memory limitations and most unforgivably, no simultaneous co-op so Double Dragon was bit of a misnomer in that case.
      The second game is more of a matter of preference, with the NES game having more fleshed out story and more content, but also slower, more limited action, with only two enemies being able to be on screen at any time, some truly wretched platforming and a compromised ending that arguably misses the point of the arcade game.
      Sacred Stones is arguably better than The Rosetta Stone, but it's still pretty much balls, so that's not really impressive.

Funnily enough, the Amiga port had far better animation than the arcade game and was actually quite playable. Honestly, this part of the game is super frustrating, I almost put my fist through the computer screen every time I play this part.

    I remember the time my brother told me there was a new doble dragon arcade and the first time I saw it I was awed! I got to play maybe a couple times and then never again. Then years later thanks to videos like this I can realize how dreadful double dragon 3 came out to be, even ddg 3 for new was super dreadful difficult game!

      I don't know.. maybe some kind of art-style with the walk? I don't know what they were thinking, maybe realistic steps? It looks like his moviment looks like is made based around graphical-tile! It looks so choppy, unprofessional and unatural!

    I actually think this was a good attempt for a sequel, plays like the first game, and they added some nice new gameplay concepts to make the series exciting again. Plays a lil slow for the gaming era's time period tho. I think they did a poor job on the ending tho, looks ridiculous.

    I loved the art style of DD1 & DD2 but I felt they completely lost it on this one. Never even got it because of that. Probably killed the franchise too. Even the HD remakes never captured what I liked about the art direction of the first two.

    The amiga conversion of this coin-op is the only version which is good to play. It features 50hz scrolling smooth as butter, and the graphics are great. The game logic of the coin-op is a pure Failure unfortunately (even Yoshihisa Kichimoto, double dragon designer is not proud of it, because it was made for money :( )

    What a cheap ass game. I mean, I lost count of how many times Billy was ganked from behind. Boss attacks have priority over your own, so they can counter basically everything.
    The upgrade system is a neat idea but it's almost as if those tricks and weapons don't really help.
