To everyone, who don't know what is being displayed, this style suited our NATIVE terrain. we fought on hills, bush and unlandscaped areas, this also is one man demonstrating a well studied form of martial arts- that rivalled martial arts masters all around the world, both with long/short range weapon and hand to hand combat, the facial tattoo illustrates the Warriors past, tribe, origins so an anyone could identify anyone without speaking, the rapid breathing was for oxygen and testosterone circulation required for endurance and power prior to and during battle and this combined with the physical movements are menacing when such a skilled opponent advances towards you. SO to everyone else perhaps you should travel to New Zealand seek out a deeply cultural warrior, see how SILLY you feel after receiving some close hard hits with a heavy hardened wood taiaha, the English soldiers relied on numbers of well dressed gentlemen marching into canonfire and they call my people crazy naked canibals, we were not dumb enough to construct canons, guns and RPGs HITLER said if he had an army of MAORI he would have conquered the entire world

Hey Richard. I wouldn't be bothered by a few anonymous 14 year olds on the internet. Anyone who has even a semi-serious interest in martial arts or military history, knows the truth. The British were also deeply impressed by the warrior culture they encountered...and they would know, given their experiences from the Zulus to the Sikhs and Gurhkhas. Indeed, it was popular from the mid-late 1800s to the 1940s for Europeans to adopt Maori as having Aryan origins (a quasi-well intentioned yet immature and racist notion). This theory obviously died out when Nazism made such intellectual wanderings (including eugenics) deeply repugnant. However, it still shows that Maori martial prowess has never been seriously denied.

To those of you unfamiliar with this type of martial art form, although it might appear as though the warrior is dancing. Trust me when I tell you, it's how he's using his feet, there in lies the real danger. The placing of his feet, and how he goes about it, gives the warrior real power coupled with mobility. The Taiaha (pronounced Tie-aha) is a formidable wooden weapon for hand to hand killing while keeping your opponent at distance. As for the second part, the possession of the one handed weapon means this warrior is either extremely skilled and a veteran of various encounters where opponents were defeated or vanquished. The Patu (pronounced putt-two) is a one handed weapon with a specific purpose of countering two handed weapons like the Taiaha. It's job is to crush/server sinew and to shatter bone inside of Taiaha fighting zones. I would not even presume to think of taking on either weapon in combat, especially if wielded by the Te Toa Nui Tona (the great warrior) giving those demonstrations. In essence, all this might look fanciful. But you have to remember it's how we Maori fought and killed, yes that's right---KILLED one another for almost seven hundred years with great efficiency

People can't see the small circles he's making with his wrists and feet. He keeps planted, but has light feet, too. Seems like a counter attacking dance, which would be right up my alley!

They didn't rush mate. Maori invented trench warfare, which the British later implemented in the Boer war and, later, the Great War. This allowed them to creep closer, avoid artillery and storm established battlegrounds. They were also skilled ambush fighters, using the dense bush for cover and traveling light so they would not be detected. A rifle with a bayonet was no match for a patu at close range.

@submit1980 - Steel forging didn't make it's way to New Zealand until after Europeans settled the country. By that time, swordcraft was irrelevant due to the effectiveness of the taiaha against non-armored opponents and the Europeans focus on firearm development. That said, a taiaha technically outclasses a sword in close range combat against non-armored opponents.. It's longer, lighter and just as deadly against skin and flesh.

The widespread use of gunpowder in Europe led to the decline of sword usage and other close range weaponry. It's not so much the weapons that were used that led to our victories in combat, rather the skill of the fighters and the tactics used.

Many small nations stood against the British Empire and other huge empires in history from a military aspect. Example against the britts the Gurkhas, the Irish, the Scottish, some hindu tribes etc. But what weapon couldn't win was won by economy. The world war of today is still fought by money, though a digitalized one, and it is causing as much suffering as old school wars.

      @@saltysergeant4284 (a) I'm not a feminist,
      (b) I'm not a Commie.
      (c) I grew up among the Maori at Rotorua, in New Zealand, and became good friends with them. I even lived with the sister of the high chief of Te Arawa, Mihiterina Hohepa, for a while, and she was my dear friend. Her brother, the chief, Hiko-i-te-Rangi Hohepa, was also my friend, and he was a key figure in the re-establishment of Traditional Maori Education. When he received his honorary doctorate from Waikato University for this monumental work in rejuvenating Maori Education, I was there, at the ceremony, sitting next to Mihi. ruclips.net/video/nd6oKOcMoVA/видео.html
On that day, those cameras were directly behind us, and so what you are seeing in this video was what I saw with my own two eyes!
The Maori don't need anyone to defend them, feel sorry for them, help them or stand up for them. They are a strong people, and can look after themselves!
When I met Mihi, I had no idea who she was, I liked her because she was a good, kind, wise and beautiful lady, and so full of Aroha (love), and that's why we became friends. Have you ever had a genuine friend, like a brother or sister? Or do you spend your life making bitter assumptions about people you don't even know, online?
BTW, after I stayed with Mihi for a while, Te Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) impressed on me that I should move to Australia, to meet my husband. I did move to Australia, and two weeks later, met my husband, who was a Scottish Highlander. These are a Brother Nation to the Maori, and I immediately connected with them! I learned to speak Scottish Gaelic, weave tartan and cook Scottish food, including Haggis. Scotch Broth Scottish Sausages, Scottish Scones and Tablet (a type of Scottish Fudge).
I have had a rich life, embedded in my own tribal culture, that of the Highland Scots, and now, over 20 years later, have two strong (adult) sons who are aware of their deep cultural roots and so will be enabled to go with strength, into the future!
Where will you be in 20 years?
Will you have children who know who they are and are doing things that you can be proud of? Or will you be lonely and depressed, believing that you have wasted your whole life, living in some basement or rented room, living on junk food and spreading negativity, online?

    • @Cha4k
      @Cha4k 8 лет назад

Yup, Thats exactly what this was for. You have a whole bunch of guys come out and do this in front of the enemy to try and freak them out so they leave.
If that doesnt work then the actual fighting starts.
In Kendo you can scare unskilled people just by screaming at them loud enough and moving towards them, And thats half the fight won. So its a very valid tactic.
