Partial Disassembly of Olympus F.Zuiko Auto-S 38mm F1.8 lens.
Half frame lens, and NOT modern digital m4/3 lens.
The lens has some spots of oil on the aperture blades that needed to be cleaned. Sometimes the aperture blades do not need to be completely disassembled for light cleaning.

it's worth mentioning that its possible when removing the back for the aperture "levers" to "reverse" themselves. you want to make sure they're pinching against each other, instead of sitting with some space in between. Like the video it took me about an hour to figure this out. I'd assumed I just sucked and wasn't putting it back together right, but it'd actually slipped out of alignment. just got one of these and successfully cleaned off the junk on the inside of the rear element! yay!
Thanks, just fixed my 100mm f3.5 Olympus Pen lens. Diaphragm did nothing cause the pickup lever inside was not attached like it should. Easy fix. Thank you for the video.
I’m wondering if I am having a similar issue as you did. My lens is only opening to about f16. When I rotate the aperture selector ring to choose a larger aperture such as f8, the lens still opens to about f16. It will not open up any more. Was your problem like that?
@@kruseykruse I have a 100-200mm & my aperture won't work at all. It looks super complicated to take apart.
3 years later and still very useful video ! Thank you for showing this (dis)assembly in this very clear way .
The reason why I found your video is that I was gifted an Olympus Pen FT with this 38mm f1.8 lens. The lens has a problem though : The problem the aperture ring is just turning without moving the blades.
I opened it and found a) spring nor ball bearing are not there anymore and b) the “tricky part” was not well executed on this lens.
Could you or any one else here tell me which size of ball I need and also the dimensions of the spring ?
Would be great to read you…
Best regards
Hi. I was able to clean the blades and get the lens back together but, although the aperture opens and closes with the tab it wont open and close using the aperture ring. What did I do wrong? I also just noticed that the focus ring is not right. It's slipping....back to the drawing board!
After disassembling the focus barrels I'm finding it extremely difficult to reassemble correctly. The focus wheel does not reach infinity now.😢
This is probably due to error in helicoid alignment. It needs enough room to rotate to the extremes of the focus range, but not so much that it falls off the lens.
Thankyou. This is a great video. I will be cleaning my g. Zuiko 20mm F3.5 lens using this video as reference.
I also have a Olympus Zuiko Auto-zoom 50-90mm f/3.5. Do you think diy cleaning fungus on a zoom lens is possible?
Thank you. Zoom lenses are quite a bit more difficult, but it can be done.
So the rear element that screws off seems to be two lens elements together. Im trying to clean in between them, do you know how to separate them?
I believe the rear lens group is a cemented doublet. It normally cannot be separated. If there is an issue between the lenses, it might be balsam separation, which will require recementing the two lenses.
Thank you !
Dear sir, thx for this video. I think I need to go beyond this part. My focusing of a 40mm is very heavy and need to relube…
Maybe you can make a video after the part you did now. I need the focusring taken apart.
If I receive another copy, I will. Thanks.
Hi ! Have you finished cleaning your 40, sir
What did you use as a cleaning solution? Would 99.9% isopropyl alcohol be appropriate? Thank you for the detailed video!
Yes, isopropyl alcohol will work.
Sir,I'm going to clean my penf 40 1.4. Is the structure similar to 38?
I'm a year late but the 40 1.4 is actually easier to take apart and reassemble!
Ye🥰I made it LOL@@oobledooble3342
Monsieur bonjour
I need your hel.I have a zuiko 35 mm F2 with fungus do you think that is the same construction and that thé same process is possible ? Thank you very much.
It is similar. Uncrew branding ring, remove aperture ring, and then unscrew the front group. Late Zuiko lenses may use adhesive to hold the front glue in place. It may be difficult to remove, but can be done.
be very careful that you don't mark the screws, the screws are softer than the driver, also when taking the front element, be careful with the tool, as this is harder than the soft retaining disk with the lens details on, maybe use toothpicks until the final tighten.
Using the proper JIS/JCIS screwdrivers and some solvent to soften any adhesive will prevent damaging the screws. Thanks for watching.
