The only good moments are when individuals go for an offensive run!! There have never been any fluent offensive movements. Players like Foden can't perform with that type of management. @@tusharimdad9595 Southgate has a very basic philosophy on tactics - rewatch the sequence of actions and setup from the England players that gave Pickford the time and space to pick out that pass to Toney, who wins the foul; the switch from Saka to Palmer for the free kick; Kane and Eze planning their positions for the inswinger from Palmer that ultimately leads to Eze’s mis-kick to Kane’s winning goal against Slovakia.
That’s controlled randomness like making your own luck.
What he does have that’s consistently been a plus for England is a near scientific eye for detail on the fundamentals of tournament football, more so than about free flowing tactics and that’s just his way.
It’s worth pointing out that he is working with tools that might look good on paper but are clearly either tired, injured, semi-injured.

The passing was much more fluid, with some great diagonal passes over the top to the wingbacks (and great first touches to bring it down). Mainoo and Saka played well, as well as the 3 centre backs. For most of the games at the EUROs apart from today at times, England have played some of the most boring football I’ve ever seen, yet they’re still in the tournament as they’ve made it to the semifinals following their penalty shootout win over Switzerland. They might actually win this tournament playing like this. A lot of people have pushed an agenda against Gareth Southgate and think that he’s a fraud and a terrible manager, but at the end of the day, he’s taken them to 3 semifinals in the last 4 major tournaments. After 5 games against Slovakia Slovenia Denmark Serbia and Switzerland, they have won 1 game in 90 minutes and have also scored 5 goals and they struggled in a group where all the teams that advanced to the next round failed to win a single game and they were the only team that won a game. This is 2004 Greece all over again, this is the exact same way that Portugal won the EUROs 8 years ago where they finished 3rd in their group and struggled to win games in regular time.
I don’t know how England and Gareth Southgate keep getting away with this as they were on the brink of losing twice against Slovakia and Switzerland, a moment of individual brilliance from Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka respectively leveled the game and they prevented them from getting eliminated because by now they should’ve gone home. When you have players of that caliber who can bail you out when your team isn’t playing well and produce a moment of magic out of nothing that’s the difference between winning or losing a major tournament as at this stage, still in the competition, it’s all about your stars they have to step up and deliver when the lights are the brightest. It’s easy to complain about the way that they’re playing as there’s nothing exciting about them and they can be a boring team to watch, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter because they’re doing their job which is to win games and that alone has been enough for them to advance to the next round. Look at France for example, without a goal from open play they’re in the semifinals and I agree that when you play against better teams playing like this isn’t always sustainable, but football is about getting the right results particularly in a major tournament because some of England’s poor performances won’t even matter if they win the EUROs and even if they beat the Netherlands in the semifinals, they still have to play either Spain or France in the final. They’ve had an issue when it comes to penalty shootouts, it’s great that Southgate brought on the right players and all of his best penalty takers went first which set the tone for the team and they converted all of their penalty kicks. It’s funny how a team that hasn’t scored a goal from open play and a team that’s been hanging on might actually meet each other in the final.

The group stages were great with teams like Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Austria etc all balling out, but as soon as the QFs rolled up and nearly all the exciting teams were knocked out it's been dire. Portugal vs France followed by England vs Switzerland were probably the worst QFs I've ever watched. At least Spain vs Germany and Netherlands vs Turkey were good, but those semis might be a hard watch with France and England, and a France vs England final I think is the most likely final with two anti football teams with terrorist managers and tactics.

Anyway, not sure why Switzerland coach hadn't used Shaqiri earlier, he's capable of creating a chance at any moment, why bench such players, even if not in prime of career anymore. Southgate did well, had the guts to change formation and was pacing along the touchline like most managers do. Just the subs were as usual too late, pro active managers start subbing usually around the 60-65 min mark (or few min earlier), especially nowadays when you've got 5 subs allowed (+1 in extra time). Got great talent on bench, use them. Not sure what he sees in Foden cause that guy doesn't deserve to start, he's been very poor whole tourney. Got Palmer, Gordon, Watkins- who doesn't have to play as 9, give them more minutes. I'm quite sure England is going to beat Holland and reach the final. Bellingham is world class btw
