in 2015 He was depressed and down about having no prospects, no immediate climbing plans . . . . and 3 years later he free-solo's El Capitan.. Mind blowing . . . . . One can learn so much from this guy.

@@grantsomething The movie Free Solo only got out in 2018 because there was a lot of editing to do (since they had more than 2 years of footage), but the actual climb happened on June 3rd, 2017.
I think a lot of climbers hide what they plan to do. In Free Solo, Alex said he'd thought about climbing El Capitan for 7-8 years, so he was probably thinking about it despite saying he had no plans.
alex is one of those people that can make you feel so human, he was depressed when this video was made and then he completed one of his greatest accomplishments a few years later and he’s so amazing for it

What is a common theme here is he is humble, hard working and dedicated. Sort of the basics of a fulfilling life in whatever success means to you. Also, preparation is as well in his mix of traits. In the preparing for El Cap, he spent 2 years scouring that face and doing his HW to the max degree in order to be successful; that is discipline defined. Very impressive for a young man. I recently tore my ACL while a work, and am looking for ways to stay motivated while out of a job I love, these video segments are a life saver. Thank you.

He's dead on about people who make terrible health choices criticizing danger sports. I once had a 350 lb Yosemite employee tell me how stupid and dangerous climbing and base jumping was. I just remember thinking, what a judgmental view of risk from a man who'll probably drop dead at a early age.

Calling someone hypocritical for being judgemental does not mean Alex or morgan are negating the fact that they acknowledge they are doing a risky activity. They are simply saying don't through stones when you live in a glass house too. Their rebuttal is not a logical fallacy. They are simply making an observation and not denying what they are doing is risky.

One would never know Alex was someone who had a hard time approaching people. He communicates so well. No pretense, no BS. Just straight-forward and honest. Even better--- that following his mind-blowing free solo of El Cap--he's the same unpretentious, honest, no-nonsense guy.
To free solo the routes he has done is the most amazing feat ever.
Mentioning the risks that others take with their lives through things like poor diet and lack of exercise while they point fingers at those who push boundaries was right on the money.
My Dad died young too. I'm a backpacker and would love nothing more than to take my Mom with me. For decades she walked many miles a day but was recently hit with a nerve condition brought on by the polio she had as a kid. That hurts me even though she's just glad she took advantage of what she had when she could.
When I'm suffering on a trail I try to think about how many people would love the opportunity to see what I'm able to see in nature. The older person, that kid in a wheelchair, the person who is developmentally disabled. Don't need much more inspiration to keep going than that.

Beautifully made mini-documentary. Alex is a person who exemplifies many qualities that we all should embrace with more conviction. He's a great role model for all of us in committing to excellence via discipline and clear thinking.

I am a fan from Florida. i went to Yosemite and Zion after watching Alone on the Wall. Would have probably never gone if it was not for Alex. I had to see for myself. It is my favorite documentary.
Interesting guy. Odd to realize how even though he's an extraordinary athlete, he is like so many other people....ambitions, struggles, second guessing oneself. We all struggle, sometimes we succeed.
Alex has a lucidity about life that is so well measured and understandable. His perspective is something to be aspired towards, but it’s entirely unique and couldn’t be duplicated.
I've noticed after watching a bunch of videos featuring him that he doesn't blink very much. It's almost as if he's in this weird zone 100% of the time.

he is not only a perfect climber but also a really smart person living a healthy lifestyle doing what he loves. If a woman doesnt get why you do something you are passionate about then there is no point of that relationship because life is too short to not do the things you always love doing
JJ Same here. My dad was a control freak and not in a good way. I left after graduating high school and never looked back. Best move I ever made. You have let people be themselves, not who you think they should be.

thanks for a neat little video. I enjoyed the look at the everyday life and training of an athlete I admire. His statements regarding perception of risk and hypocracy is spot on. I think our view of risk is tainted by our perception of consequences. The consequences of mistakes made while climbing are readily apparent, while atherosclerosis is an abstract consequence that is usually ignored by people who consume unhealthy food. This leads people to overstate some risk and minimize other risk.

Really interesting video. It shows that even doing the thing you are most passionate about has its challanges and shouldnt be taken lightly but ultimately its the thing you love so youll find a way around it.

It's not the greatest physical achievement ever, by far. There are tons of greater physical achievement. It might very well be the greatest mental achievement ever, though.

@@dylanBBE If you want to stay in the climbing world, there are way tougher routes to do. As Honnold himself said previously in interviews, he's never above70% of his physical potential during such free solos.
So, it is not the best physical achievement. But it is possibly the greatest mental achievement, as it requires to stay in absolute focus for such a long time. The description given by the "unicorn guy" about how Honnold was when they met during his climb is clearly telling about that.
@@dylanBBE I would say probably Pete Whitaker rope soloing Freerider in under 24hr. Not as high risk as a free solo, but you have to lead the pitch, then clean it, then jumar up. Incredibly physically taxing, I couldn't imagine climbing that hard for that long, especially without a partner.
He always seems so calm and wise. And correct about people and their health. Anyone know if his book is out and what it is called? Cheers
+MX Tex 🚲 It is and I recommend it, called "Alone on the Wall". He discusses the technique and mental obstacles he had to deal with on some of his solo projects. My hands got sweaty from reading it, haha. You will enjoy it for sure.

It’s amazing what healthy food does to the body. I once weighed 380 after a long career of Search track and rescue and I went hard core vegan and lost weight pretty quick. A doctor told me not to lose the weight too fast because my stomach is gonna have stretch marks, so I took his advice. After one year I lost 100 pounds. I weigh about 220 now and it’s been three years. This summer I’m going to lose the rest of the weight. I used to be in great shape when I did SAR. I was fit, very athletic and could climb.
The point of the story is that when you change your diet, your whole DNA changes. People have said I don’t even look like the same person now.
Totally agree on Alex's outlook on risk. This dude is definitely one of my idols..

He was down and out in 15, after doing the Fitz traverse in 14. Kinda hard to believe his melancholy attitude after these incredible achievements.

Heck I am a workaholic and sleep 4 hours per day and all studies say I am at risk for a heart attach or stroke.... although I think I am super human ..... as I am sure he feels the same as he feels super human and must go on no matter what to motive something !

+Noah Lane , I love that park, the way it has those islands downstream and all. It's a good summer place to go. Watch out for rattle snakes. I've seen them a couple times.
+NickRoman yeah man. I grew up riding the Goethe bike jumps, skimboarding twig, kayak surfing the rapid downstream, rafting, jumping off that bridge he runs across, etc.. That was playground when I was 5, and still is at age 33! I've seen plenty of rattlers, almost been trampled by a heard of deer, a couple mountain lyons, foxes, river otters, and more. It's suburban paradise in Sacramento!

Alex, just watched "Free Solo" you are an amazing athlete and your achievement on El Cap is probably one of, if not the greatest physical achievements of the last century. However, pal, I think if you do not open your heart a little more and give a little more of yourself you will end up a lonely old man like myself. Like myself, twenty odd years ago, you seem to think you can continue to live in a vacuum and that climbing will always be enough to satisfy you both emotionally and intellectually - trust me, it will not - If you do not want to die alone, don't continue on the course you are on. We all need people and interpersonal interaction in our lives in order to maintain a healthy and trusting outlook .....You do not need to perform any harder than you are - you are the best in the world at what you do - find love and keep it - I threw it away so many times as it was quite easy to find when I was young and fit and relatively attractive - now I am pushing sixty - my knees and elbows are shot from skiing and climbing for thirty to forty plus years....I am alone, a karmic payback for all the hearts I used and I broke without consideration for their feelings always concerned with my own - Karma is real, and it will bite you in the butt. You are young enough to still put together a good balance with your life - don't throw it all away being too selfish - I think you are a smart enough and a reflective enough person that you will figure it out before it is too late - in case you don't this note is to plant the seed - you don't want to end up like me....trust me man, it is a lonely life, but often when we are young we never think we will succumb to a hermetic existence but it just kind of sneaks up on you and then you know of no other way to live - a cautionary tale my young brother....plant your seed.....have many children, they are the best gift one could every have - along with a loving partner that is - love is what it is all about - without it we are nothing but dust in the wind........
Wow, is Alex ever correct about people who are negatively pointing the finger at him because he takes risks on the wall, when they take TERRIBLE risks with their health, eating wrong, not getting enough exercise or sleep, not taking active control over the stresses in their life, driving a vehicle distracted, even walking down the street distracted so you can't act defensively, so many things that they do that definitely shortens their lifespan! Must look pretty inane to him to see all that, when his risks are so well planned, thought out, memorized and accomplished successfully! He seems like a very "down-to-earth" kind of guy (yeah, pun intended) and very normal kind of nice, unassuming person, a very likeable kid of guy!
