  • The BMW M635 CSi was BMW's flagship sports GT in the 1980s. Powered by the legendary 3.5 litre M88 engine, the M635 was as capable on the road as it was gorgeous to look at. The last of the true shark-nosed BMWs, the M635 is one of our favourite cars and is seeing an upsurge in interest right now as a usable modern classic.
In this first part of our buying guide, Barney gives you an outline of the E24 M635 CSi's history, background and models. The second film will cover the typical weak areas on an E24 and how to spot them and find a good one.

I've gotten one of these and it is absolutely spectacular, the manager of the dealership I got it from keeps really good tabs on his clients because I bought that car back in 2010 yet he rang me in march 2018 to offer me a 850CSi with a six-speed manual.
I instantly caved in and snatch his hand off because one of the only BMWs I wanted more than a O.G 6 series was a O.G 8 series. I mean the dream is own a M1 but that would mean winning the lottery and finding someone willing to sell their M1.

Wow, you have a wonderful line up :) I am a big massive fan of the e31 8 series to have one myself would my dream come true. I remember being about 5 years old, when my dad had a e23 735i and was looking to buy a 1988 e34 535iSe. He brought me a photo home in a frame of a 850i in calypso red. He gave it to me and it has been my dream ever since. I think it was about 1994 or 1995, after having a 1990 E32 Alpina B12 and a 1994 e34 540i touring, that he finally bought a 1992 850i in Brilliant red. It was amazing!! I remember people asking if it was a Ferrari. Anyway I’m sorry for talking so much. These videos really bring back the passion I had as a kid for BMW.
Congratulations on your 850csi I bet she is perfect!!

That description he gave about the level work required for a 'proper' timing chain replacement every 100k (at 6.00) positively frightened me. That's open heart surgery on an old man. Maybe I'll pass on buying one of these after all...

Really really ahead of its time just like the E31 8 series. Speaking of 8 series the E31 was probably the successor to the E24 6 series since the 6 series was dead till 2004 for the E63 known for the V10.

III BMW III The original 6 and 8 series were soooo special. I just wish BMW kept the 6 series name purely for sports cars, and not turning the legendary name into a 6 series grand turismo family car. It Should of kept it 5 series name :) I hope they don’t do this to the current 8 series.

I owned an 88 M6. The thing I hated about the car was the maintenance of the engine every 10k to 15k miles. The 24 valves had shims and those shims needed replacing. This is true with all the M cars in the 80's and 90's. If you DID NOT do the maintenance interval of the shims, you could end up ruining the engine.

@classic heroes In our home town years ago there was this very nice gentleman who has the last registered UK 635csi highline. It was on a J reg and he owned it from new. He was going to buy a e31 but preferred the E24 and bought it :) The last time I saw this guy was 12 years ago, back when I was 21. We started talking about this BMW when he discovered that I was the person with the 1997 e38 740i sitting outside the local fish mongers down bellwalk. It’s amazing how BMW’s from different eras bring people together. I was just interested if you know the guy. Take care

There's nothing wrong with buying that car, it would be only wrong if you pay for it as you would pay for one in excellent condition.
