Dr. McGilchrist is one of the few speakers who can move me to tears just through the words he says - that's how I know that his words, although difficult to understand taken at face value, are profoundly true.
Very interesting. Well presented. A champion. How hard it must be talking to academic people ,whose research ,and dedication to rational thought experiments (left brain focus) seem to negate talking about love, beauty, feelings, and spiritual awareness. I think that the mind (not the brain) has evolved to experience love ,(sharing, caring, respect and bonding) as well as beauty (in art, music, nature, etc) so instead of destruction, chaos, nihilism and fear. we create, we seek perfection, we have compassion, and we hope for peace and harmony. Be careful of extremes. Balance, homeostasis, not all light, not all dark, is the key. I want to start reading your books , but the more I want know ,means the less room there is in mind for space, quietness, beauty and love. Perhaps I need to stop writing , have a cup of tea , give my wife a cuddle , and meditate.
"Dont just do something; listen" - Creativity comes from attention; doing something usually just means habitual reaction. Reminds me of J. Krishnamurti.
Has McGhilcrist read Korzybski's Science and Sanity? Much of this seems quite compatible with General Semantics. "The Map is not the Territory" is perhaps Korzybski's most famous quote regarding abstractions. He also strongly influenced Gestalt Theory (Perls) and Alan Watts despite being branded "pseudoscience" unfortunately.
Branded pseudoscience by whom? Richard Dawkins? He doesn't have a monopoly on science because he's an overt atheist. Some scientists have an agenda to push a certain view of the world and dismiss other views as anathema as though their view was a religion of its own. Dawkins seems to be among them.
Iain McGilcrist invites us to step out of our busy lives and take the time to absorb our surroundings, be present with those around us and let go to become part of the flow that is all around us - all the better to appreciate all that is, revel in what is revealed when we take in the whole and be in wonder how everything connects and how small a part we are in the big picture... Compare and contrast that to the striving, pushing and determined effort we put into modern life, doing what exactly - putting the next tick in the box, walking that 10,000th step, watching that clock to check on the timeliness of everything... Perhaps, living as if life mattered, living without regret, living to appreciate, value and love our world would do us some real good to ourselves, those around us and the wider world in general... In so doing I suspect our true calling, our purpose will be revealed and a life of meaning awaits and beckons...
The problem with a lot of this is that the good doctor tells us lot of things that are, to use one of his own words, implicit.Apart from the 'TONIGHT! RIGHT HERE! SOLD OUT! vibe it's...you tell me!!
This man is brilliant ⭐
McGilchrist is on another level.
no, it's just that most people are sub-sub-sub-sub par.
I assure you, there is much he wishes he could say, but you would not believe him.

Ingenious thoughts!
Good lecture, out to lunch camera work.
I saw the E's and 8's. I've always known I'm crazy even when people try to reassure me I'm not.

McGilchrist: have the courage to think differently, to see past the brain's illusions
also McGilchrist: of course consciousness exists!
Dynamite.
I love to see the faces of confusion in people...is it that difficult to understand?

People in the audience are staring like bloody bozos.
And yet we still have it within us to be surprised....
Foot twirling. Stop it lady.
