Just a warning - this is great phone, but the camera is not the best on the market. You could argue that it's the best under strong lighting condition, as here the high resolution sensor tends to allow it to capture more detail then the competition. However in low light usage unless you have a steady tripod, it's a hurricane step back from something like an S7/S8 or HTC U11.
I like the design. It's unmistakably a Xperia, and they are not made to be slick and designy but simply practical, which I like. I send back the S8. It's a great phone, but not for me. I want a 16:9 aspect ratio and some bezel because it feels more comfortable and not slippery. The Compact is too small though.
i still have my white xperia z3 compact with glass front and back. it has a thin flexible rubber protection and looks very good with it. and a front glass protection. if i take it all off it still looks brand new and still performs outstanding after ALL these years and usage. This will be the next compact i buy just cause my user experience was outstanding with the z3 compact
salseros1985 I too still have my Z3C, I was pondering wheather or not to replace it with this phone but I am not entirely sure yet. I mean my phone is still going strong but again I think I may keep this phone until it dies but I doubt it will do any time soon.
Had mine for three years and it's definitely not a perfect phone - front glass came off three times (everytime fixed under warranty), back glass is all scratched, microsd/usb cover doesn't have any rubber sealing anymore and microsd card doesn't stay in the slot. But OS is still very responsive and quick and battery life is still better than in many of new phones. I'm definitely getting an XZ1 compact as soon as it's on sale here.
Nasir Anila hi Nasir. Well its never bad changing a phone when its been quite some years now. U can always keep the phone as backup or sell it or give to someone close to u who u think could need a phone. The xz1 compact is a good sequal. Luckily i didnt go for the x compact 😊
KocuRisko u can always fix the micro sd card by pushing it in, then put a little bit of glue that dry's in a few seconds and whenever u need to take card out. Just cut the glue. Its easy. For the rest its because u didnt use a case, i mean the scratches.

I was waiting for soo long for a new compact phone with a plastic back. Never understand the trend with glass bodies which have to be put in a case. So, Sony listened and they will be rewarded by me. After the Z3C and my Nexus 5 (both sill in use) this is my new phone.
I got xz1 compact and i can say that this phone takes unbelievable pictures even at night but with manual mode. Automatic and manual modes are with completely different qualities. You just need to adjust and carefuly push the manual button (not on screen senson). Here is how to get great quality at night with manual mode: (turn off the flash) brightness at full, iso at minimum, ss fully down to 1, after push the capture button half to see how the light is regulated, if the picture is dark then move iso little up and still check with button, if okay then hold the button at half position and watch carefuly (do not shake the phone) frame will change once in a second and when you will see that sharpness is good with some frame, push the button fully and quickly as posible to catch that frame. I know it is not easy but with this mode pictures will have much better quality than with auto mode, at daylight taking the pictures with this mode is much easy. This phone is very powerfull, only it depends on us, like BMW which do not corrects the mistakes of a driver like mercedes, but with good driver bmw has more capabilities..

I use Z3 compact before and upgrade it to XZ because it was broken. I love my phone now but the size is killing me; it feels so full in my pocket and too big for a long 1 hand operation. I hope I have the chance to upgrade to XZ1 compact soon.
This is my next phone. I have been considering LG V20 (i know a bit too different from the XZ1C) but I just realized how this phone covers all my needs - decent camera, front mounted speakers, fantastic battery life, and reasonable form factor. (although the price difference of the LG V20 now at ~$350 vs the XZ1 at ~$500 is still really tempting)
Why do all other Android phone makers think we all have huge hands? I HATE the new phones with 18:9 screens that make the top of the screen out of reach. IPhone 7 4.7" iPhone se or this for me.
I want this phone just wished it slimmer and had a better screen. Considering XZ1 premium but I really do not need a huge screen. My Nokia of 5 years is about to die on me, I need a premuim ultracompact that will good to last me the next 3-4 years and not be so out dated.
Great review. I'm getting this phone. Very powerful, great battery life, awesome camera, waterproof. I would have preferred a 1080p display, and maybe 4.7", with a touch less bezel. Also 64gb on board storage. But overall it's the best on the market at the moment for my needs. The only decent high end compact smart phone. Almost perfect.
I am surprised that you have failed to mention that Sony has left out double tap to wake! Considering sony does not offer features like wave to wake or active display, it is a bit awkward to hit the power button and turn on the display to check notifications.
Dave Flynn hi I had the Sony z5 compact back in the day. That had 720 and that was the reason why I sold it. The screen was the weakness I loved the phone other wise
I'm using a 5.5" IPS LCD phone with 720p resolution and it takes me a very close look to even notice a difference. You must have some kind of eagle sharp eyes to notice some pixelation on the screen at about a phone screen viewing distance.

Sony, a company that nobody appreciates their mobile phones products except sony itself. 1) Audio Department - It took several mobile phone generations before they realized that they have the poorest sound quality and very minute sound. Sony is one of the most pioneering in the audio industry but it seemed that they are not implementing it to their mobile phones. As compared to the amateur huawei or HTC etc., they have the best sound quality and loudness that people surely appreciate. Well, not until Xperia XZ1 was produced. This phone seemed to have louder stereo speakers but still not comparable to other phones having loud/stereo speakers. 2) Display Department - I cannot understand why sony used the unpopular sRGB LED display panels with a WHITE LED FILTER. Display color is dull, washed-out/faded and it looks like an old photos or videos. Sony claimed it to be SHARP DISPLAY. Oh!!! come on sony, what engineers you have? See how brilliant and punchy display in Samsung phones..... - while the other phone manufacturers profited much on their large sales, sony on the other hand struggles as their phones almost nobody wants to buy them. Go to the department stores and just look at their display on their shelves. You seldom see Sony products. 3) Hardware Department - Always use the outdated old school technology (Bulky, chunky large bezels, few sensors etc.... ) while others were almost in the 2nd generation of bezeless OLED 18.5:9 aspect ratio display panels. Correct me if i am wrong, Sony Corporation is in joint venture with JDI and Panasonic Corporation and executed a definitive agreement to establish a new company, JOLED Inc. It charges slowly at that rate because probably 80% is more than good enough to last you a day, and it also helps prolong the phone's battery life. I usually don't top off my phone's charge to 100%, and it's been more than a year now since I'm doing it, and my phone's battery is still in perfect condition like brand new.

Please don't buy a Sony phone. Xperia line have SERIOUS PROBLEM of overheating, as result of that the screen POP OUT AFTER 6 months. Check videos on RUclips Xperia compacts screens popping out.
One handed use is important to me. The screen really shouldn't be bigger than 5" in my opinion. Kind of a waste if you can barely reach the top left especially when you are walking.

You can detect the pixels because of the pentile arrangement of your display. On a true RGB panel you dont have these issues.
I have this phone. 2 days of usage from a single charge is easy.

2 hours charging for a 2700 mAh battery? Crazy
It takes about 1 hour to charge from 0 to 80%, then another hour from 80 to 100%. It's a feature called Qnovo and it prevents battery degradation.
It charges slowly at that rate because probably 80% is more than good enough to last you a day, and it also helps prolong the phone's battery life.
I usually don't top off my phone's charge to 100%, and it's been more than a year now since I'm doing it, and my phone's battery is still in perfect condition like brand new.

E.N.S The fantastic thing is the huge variety of choices we all have at many price and feature levels. I have smartphones from $54 to $800 and screens from 4.5 to 7 inches. A phone that is MEH to me may be great to you, and vice versa. I'm not knocking your choice or decision, its just not a phone that meets my needs. My choice may be MEH to you. Peace

Please don't buy a Sony phone. Xperia line have SERIOUS PROBLEM of overheating, as result of that the screen POP OUT AFTER 6 months. Check videos on RUclips Xperia compacts screens popping out.

XZ Premium has 5.5 inch screen. The bezels are huge though, I was surprised when I saw it in store, it's really big.
One handed use is important to me. The screen really shouldn't be bigger than 5" in my opinion. Kind of a waste if you can barely reach the top left especially when you are walking.
5.5 is the same size of the S5 the s8 is 5.7
