Not difficult to add the Google Play store. Many videos on RUclips to show you the process. I did on my 2017 HD 8 and I still use it on a daily basis. Special offers is not a big deal as you swipe them and that is it. With Google Play and Amazon Prime, you have the best reason to own a tablet outside of the iPad for a fraction of the price.
I have the larger version of this tablet and I really like it. I also have an ipad, but use the Fire more often. I agree with everything she says and since I also have Alexa, I can say that the Alexa assisted functions are very nice. I'm going to give this unit to my mother who at 87 needs a simple-to-operate device that can respond to verbal requests.
I highly recommend the Fire HD 10 2017 as the hardware is top notch and it routinely goes on sale for $99 for the 32GB version. Haven't tried the HD 8 but the HD 7 was bordering on junk with bad touch sensitivity and subpar screen but at least it was free and was able to flash CyanogenMod on it awhile back so it's not completely useless.
Hi Lon! Thanks for this Fire update. Can you link me to a video by you that runs down some of the very best, yet affordable tablets from either this year or 2017? Thanks so very much! We love your work & appreciate all of the time & consideration that you put forward in your videos. Much love from Pennsylvania! Mark & Teresa
I have the 2017 version. It's an OK tablet for the money. My biggest complaint was the display. I don't think it's all that good. I gave Amazon negative feedback on that. For a little more $ they could have provided a better display. I wish they'd bring back an HDX variant like they had before.
Fire 10 HD is great for Netflix and Prime. 2017 HD 8 sux. I have both. Fire HD 10 has a really sweet screen, and the HD 8 is painfully bad. I guess I'll waitt until next year on this one.
One inaccuracy and an important update you left out. Hands-free Alexa is available on the previous 8" tablet and has been for some time. Show Mode is also available on that tablet. However, on the previous 8", the tablet needed to be plugged in to access Show Mode. Now you can access Show Mode when it's not plugged in. Something till now only the 10" could do. The thing you left out is now the tablet can treat the internal memory and SD card as a single internal memory. This solves a number of problems the previous iterations had with saving and accessing apps and other info. Another nice little thing is now it has a restart function.
I just used the 2-year worry free guarantee - The screen just got cracked after 19 months. I'm on this video because Amazon notified me that a free 2018 version arrives, tomorrow. Excellent customer service & at no cost - I'm very impressed. I know batteries don't degrade like they used to, but a new tablet with new battery life will be nice. It would be nice if the new tablet had updated hardware specs, but... I really can't complain...
Just purchased one from the Amazon Prime Black Friday sale for $49. Not really, I opted out for the 32gb no ad model with an Amazon case and 64gb sd card. I already own a Fire 10 but after the purchase of an echo stand my wife now has that unit and loves it. That is her upstairs tablet and an iPad 12 Pro is her downstairs tablet. My new Fire 8 will probably still some time away from my Chromebook.
OK, so here's scoop on this thing if you're Canadian - no Alexa for you! Or, at least, no Alexa OOTB. However...it can be done. I have my VPN installed in my router, it is on a US server and I have a US Kindle account. Alexa is working for me and I haven't seen one ad yet. I'm still within the return time so I haven't added the Google Play store yet, but it doesn't look too difficult. I really bought this because I didn't want another dedicated e-reader and I really needed a Kindle or Fire for my PDF books. Most Canadians have the Kobo because we can borrow library books with it. We still can't borrow books on the Kindle. I like the Kobo but it really doesn't handle PDFs very well and I have a lot of them. I wasn't expecting a lot from this tablet. I ended up being quite impressed with it for the price. Nothing about it is great but at the same time, nothing is completely horrible either. Most cheap tablets have horrible tinny speakers. I wouldn't want to listen to music on it but it's fine for watching video. The screen is OK too. If you can get one on sale it's cheap enough to be an impulse purchase that you won't regret.
If you want to see RUclips you can download the Firefox app. Then go to the Firefox app and do a search on RUclips and you can get the official RUclips site not the website.
Very disappointing to see how outdated their processors are in these tablets, but at that unreal price point I guess you get what you pay for. And I'd rather trust their tablet than some other cheap android tablets from brands I never heard of. I think the screen holds up better on these because the casing is plastic and it allows a little more flexibility compared to very stiff aluminum Apple uses on iPads.
Using my hd10 now with installed Google play. It's better than my iPads..plural.. the way I set it up. Amazon also has more support especially with Amazon prime. I also use it mostly for RUclips, movies, and browsing the internet.
if you search on amazon for magnetic charging cables you will find they are inexpensive and fit snug and you will never wear out the plug again. we use them in almost all our devices now including tablets, over the ear bluetooth headphones, phones and wireless charging pads to make them easier to move around so we don't wear out those plugs as well.
I used to like the Kindles, but as of late I hate them. Many times their own daughter company, Audible, won't show your audible library properly (many books not shown) and won't even download when forced by queuing a book to the kindle from my PC. Latest issues are things like notifications to check out the settings for various forced Amazon apps and settings that regardless of what you do you cannot get them to go away.
it's a disappointment that amazon hasn't updated/upgraded the hardware but at the same time the table/OS does look good though for casual everyday stuff and maybe light gaming it's like $20 more to remove the ads, also nice review
Hello, I am from Brazil. My question is about the usability for reading PDF, access Google Drive and editing Docs, Slides... I have a Kindle Paperwhite that I love it! But for papers and PDF stuffs is not a good choice. Can u recommend it for this questions or should I go forward another tablet? Thanks
New camera. Don't use it. Alexa. Don't use it. Special Offers. Just ignore them. Also installed Google Play Store and disabled a lot of Amazon stuff, so it runs pretty much like a generic tablet. Pretty good deal for $44, which was the price one day at Staples.
Thanks for the good video In comparison to Android what is the operating system equivalent to Android 6 7 or 8 ? Also in your review of NuVision you were using a stand where does it come from ? Do you have an email or a WhatsApp number for other questions thanks again

Thanks for your usual excellent review, Lon.
Are you hearing anything about an update to the Fire HD 10?
Not yet.

The Fire 10 is decent. At least it's full HD and has a pretty good color gamut and high peak brightness.

Agree- the Fire 10 is the best of the Amazon lineup at the moment. Excellent value.

Those software updates already come to the 2016 model so it can do pretty much the same. Even Show mode.
SInclair ZX81 in the background, my first PC :)
I thought it was a Sinclair! I had one too
Man I love those disclosures!
It's certainly refreshing compared to the rampant deception found across the platform.
Hahahahahaha same.

How about a "How To" video on sideloading the playstore. You did do a sorta sideload video on the Wyze camera. Can't be a lot different .
just get the ad version and wait for root or a custom recovery so you can flash a vanilla version of android....easy
Got this tablet on Christmas eve so fare been ok reading books
Excellent review. I understand the business reason they haven't updated the hardware, but for me it's a disappointment.

Thank you for the video!! Has the youtube issue been fixed? I want to use it to play my music playlists. Thank you for your response!!
So I don't believe there's an official RUclips app yet for the tablets unfortunately.
You can actually download Google play and then get youtube and anything else you want. It is really easy
So do you have also issues installing the eBay app?

Lon! Great video as usual. Where did you get the stand for tablet?
Amazon Basics has it! amzn.to/2RweojB less than $10 too.
In your Slingshot Benchmark, it would have been nice to compare this tablet to the Amazon Fire Tablet HD 10 (2017)
HD10 scored 670, it is a considerably better performing device.

This device is cheap and bulletproof well worth the money.
Still happy with my older 10" so I don't have any use for this one. Good review though, as usual.
is it good for playing pubgm ?? how much fps is this got?? pls reply quickly
lon, was the hd 10 updated as well
I watched Lon's reviews online and a few days ago I went out and bought a Fire 8 tablet!
nice and now you should install google play its really easy. more options for apss
Does the 2018 version have a screen mirroring functionality?
Is that a Timex Sinclair 1000 sitting on the back shelf?
Install Google Services and RUclips Vanced and you'll have best RUclips experience ever.
Where did u buy ur game controller
Great! wish you'd look at how plex works on it..
You cannot give Alexa commands when the tablet is off as you stated.
yes but you can turn your tablet into an echo show, its really easy!!
If I plan on side loading the play store, world 16gb still be enough? And does the play store slow down the tablet?

You from Michigan?
You say it's the same RAM. But, it's got 512MB more RAM over last edition.
Is that so?
That means it's 2 GB ram now
@@artiniedwards5421 That's not true.
Can u transfer and read pdfs on this?
I can not get my tablet fire 7 because they said that I need to buy something for my tablet fire 7 to work
Lon, are you a cyclist? I noticed the GCN video in your "recommended videos" when you were on RUclips. Looks like my feed.
I am not but I have a friend who is and I follow his channel.
It's a good budget tablet.
Thanks for the good video

What's the difference between the 7th gen and the 8th gen?
More storage you can add and updated os based on 7.0 android and should be a little quicker but overall functionality is the same
Is Amazon phasing out the Echo Show?
OK everyone your all on you tube go in the search bar and type how to install google play on amazon fire tablet. Be sure to check unknown sources.
Anyone know what stand he is using?
5 days later and not responding to touch
Why the fuck would u EVER use always listening mode..
keep up the good work! first!
Onley one thing you carnt put highe as card in it saying don't recknice the SIM card I had to put 64 as card in
NO USER MANUEL-----BUT AVAILABLE AT EXTRA CHARGE
One thing I do t like about fire tablets when factory rest they become bricks
you for real?
Is the software update coming to older fire hd 8? I have 6th generation but no updates past fire os version 5.6
Unlikely, they'd prefer you bought a new one.
My Fire HD 6 from 2014 is still fully up to date.
you really think most people dont know how to sideload an apk??? really??? wow
Yes most consumers don't.
I wouldn’t, we aren’t all tech geeks you know! 🙄
Why no one can say Alexa ?
Is it hackable?
it's android, why wouldn't it be lol
Anything is hackable...
Danny 310 because you think apple is not hackable right?
young mouss Relax brother. Apple is much tougher to hack. You know this.
@@SouthBayLA1310 Android is not as easy as it once was
the answer is no , do not expect XDA to crack this one ,the last model ,HD8 is only rootable via a hard mod
the fire 2017 HD10 is rootable too via soft mod
no custom roms for either though the best you can do is install the play store ,install the launcher hijacker and install nova launcher ,install pre-rooted rom and xposed
the last 2 things are only possible on the HD10 though but the rest you should be able to do
but there are lots of reports now of not being able to sign in to google
i even had play services stop working on 201 fire 7 with custom roms, and google has a whitelist now for devices and play services, they are really trying to lock it down now and make it shit like IOS
My tablet is lack, I try pud voice and then is lack it self
I dont know no one who has a kindle fire in 2019
I would much rather get a Nvidia shield k1, a far better bank for your buck device.
as cost 3.5 times more
I have Nvidia K1 doesn't support any more updates anymore it's really a shame for the device.
$90 to get the one WITHOUT ads. LOL bye Amazon.
I got the Ad version at $50 and ask for remove them at no charge.
I’m not buying one of those tablets until it has a 1080p screen (1728x1080)
Huh? I think you mean 1920 x 1080.
OneManShow No, it’s because that tablet has a 16:10 ratio not 16:9
If the tablet is 16:10, that means it is taller than regular 16:9, but it is just as wide. The equivalent pixel count would be 1920 x 1200.
