Flapjack was most definitely an acquired taste, one that not everyone had. And generally the opinions on it are mixed. However, it did inadvertently save Cartoon Network from itself some years later by helping to further the careers of two creators who many may know: J.G. Quintel and Pendleton Ward, the former creating Regular Show and the latter creating Adveture Time, on which another creator, Rebecca Sugar, would work and eventually create her own series, Steven Universe which would help Cartoon Network crawl further away from its near complete meltdown after the disastrous live action era.

That Modest Mouse conection is very interesting, because one of the recurring themes of Isaac Brook´s music is actually the sea. By the time that Flapjack hit Cartoon Network, Modest Mouse already put out the album "We Were Dead Even Before the Ship Even Sank". So it really made sense that Isaac would be fan of the show.
Also dont you love the artstyle of Flapjack inspired by pirates, tattoos and old sea art? I swear that no other show looks like that.

Every time I'd put it on, I couldn't help but be reminded of Modest Mouse just by the general aesthetic and storyline. When I got to "All Hands on Deck" and heard the intro, my brain just about exploded. YESSS THERE IT IS!
this show is fantastic, there's nothing else quite like it out there! the visuals, the humor, it's so unique and a hell of a lot of fun to watch
my mom and i kept up with this show religiously, she loves anything pirate/seafaring related so she mightve liked it even more than i do, haha. i have a lot of great memories of this show, watching it as it aired was always a fun experience because you never really knew what kind of weirdness would get thrown at you next!

A marvelous video for a marvelous show! If only it came back but maybe it's better off being a gem to be discovered throughout the ages of time. I love how in one of the TV teasers, you can hear Will Arnett, the voice of Bojack! And I absolutely adore knowing Van Orman helped with Adventure Time, Grim Adventures, etc. But nothing compares to Flapjack, that is why it will always be my favorite show. (:

I remember.... Flapjack being one of the first cartoons I would actively avoid watching due to disgust of it's grotesque art style, including the mentioned Lazlow, Chowder, and Gumball. Looking back, it's even stranger than I remember. I can vaguely see the hints of Grim Adventures and Adventure Time, but the style of Flapjack... just leans too heavily into body dysmorphia and other elements that made it visually unappealing and outright repulsive when they did the hyperrealism moments.

I'm thankful for flapjack I grew up watching older cartoons (I'm Gen z so this would be what is now considered older but to me it was things that I thought had just came out) so for me, it was one of the few shows I watched when it came out. It was like a modern take (for the time) on courage the cowardly dog show, it was something I could discuss with my peers and enjoy myself unlike most the other cartoons at the time.
