      The diamonds aren't created from speed, they are formed from overpressurization & the rapid expansion of said high pressure through any bell flow nozzle or aerospike like shape cylinder... look at the most recent spacex capsule that's being tested in Texas, it has about 6 of these pressure diamonds from only one nozzle & they're very vivid

      Everyone partakes in the pollution by using products that pollute, but the primary fault lies with the people who approve of the production and distribution of those products. Everything comes from the earth, sure (mostly), but they come in different forms, from different places, and ruin delicate balances when abandoned without concern.

    Yes, you are correct that the diamond shaped pattern when the dry ice vapor is coming out of the bottle is a sonic shock wave like with a jet engine. The pressure differential required to make a sonic shockwave is not very large. Even 100 psi air hose can create a diamond shaped sonic shockwave pattern when released into the atmosphere, but you can't see it well because all the air is transparent.

    When you thinned out the Oobleck, you turned it back into a Newtonian fluid, so it worked more like water and less like Oobleck.. I'm thinking the first Oobleck test went that way because the Oobleck wanted to resist being forced quickly and became more like a solid... so not much escaped and there was no thrust, therefore the bottle didn't go. Just my thoughts... and this was very fun to watch. Enjoyment!

    Hey HPC! If you ever want to revisit this one, I would suggest that you built a water rocket stand. On the bottle where the cap is, there is a plastic ring under the threads for the cap which can be really easily held down by two horizontal nails on string. If you pull the nails away quickly, the launches are a lot better than just letting the pressure build.
    Awesome video, love you guys!

      Hey BTP, apparently catsup is also a non-newtonian fluid only it is the reverse of ooblek. catsup is a solid until you shake it and put pressure on it and then it turns into a liquid. hence the song shake, shake the catsup bottle, none will come and then a lot'll. You should try catsup bottle rockets, and catsup every where you normally put ooblek, you need to let it sit still for like an hour after it was last moved so it becomes non-newtonian again though. so like put the bottle of catsup upside down in the refrigerator the morning before you set out to film it. It would be cool to compare the effects of both fluids side by side and any other common non-newtonian fluids you can get your hands on.

    I think you should use a different non-newtonian fluid, I bet ketchup would work great! But I also think you need to give the non-newtonian fluid more time to flow down into the neck of the bottle before you pump it up for launch. (Maybe even do some bench tests to see how long that will take, so you're not just guessing, because I suspect if it had a little more time more of the fluid would have run down into the neck to act as propellant and you would have got a better launch...) Either way, awesome video, keep em coming!!! 🙌🙇👊

    Those probably are Mach diamonds you're seeing, even though the exhausting gas wasn't moving fast enough to make an audible supersonic crack. The speed of sound in air is 343 m/s, but the speed of sound in CO2 is 267 m/s. Your exhaust velocity likely landed somewhere between those two values.

    Does the oobleck become a solid when pressurised? Could that be why it didn't work so well the first time?
    Or does it only become solid when it receives a sudden impact?
    Also it still makes me smile how you say oobleck!
    "erberlerk" :-D

    How about making a metal bottle rocket using something light like aluminum? You'd be able to put more pressure than a plastic bottle can endure.

    Nice video. How about gasoline as fuel with candles all around the base so when the gasoline comes out on launch it catches fire?
